No, forcing behinds in pressure situations or when a side could not see a clear path out of defence was common-place. The rule was changed because Patrick Bowden in a close game chose to walk the ball back over the behind line without kicking it in, which he did on several occasions to soak up time.

Patrick bowden and hawthorn did it. It was changed after hawthorn ruined the grand final by doing it about 10 times.

Hawthorn were also dropping players behind the ball after they handballed it because the penalty was tiny.

Could also argue the belly punches became a plague under hawthorns unsociable football that season.

Yeah possibly but they finished 8th and have played on the road twice and have less finals experience than us while we had the week off. If we are premiership worthy we will get this done.

I tipped Hawks last night - Adelaide have been seriously off their tucker ever since the Rankine debacle. Controversies are the worst things at this time of the season. Leads to disunity / distraction / negativity.

I hoped Adelaide would win because we'd almost certainly beat them in a Prelim in Melbourne. Against the Hawks, I'm not sure. Anything could happen.

I do think Geelong will win the Prelim, but it feels 60/40 to me.

'knock-out final' is a bit selective. We beat them in finals games in 2011 and 2016. Hawthorn didn't even qualify for finals between 2019 and 2023.

The fact is we have lost to them 3 times now in knockout finals when we should have beaten them.

2000, 2008 and 2013.

It's what makes this game extremely nerve racking.

If they roll us this time they're snide little remarks gain even more traction.....if we beat them we can start to argue back with more conviction.

It's a massive game because it's a prelim but it's also a massive game in terms of our rivalry with these arrogant pricks.

I love the footy club.

But I also have studied our history very closely and moreso than any other club in VFL/AFL history we have left premierships on the table because we have failed to convert in finals series.

This game is massive.

Hawthorn are the opposite of us they've won far more premierships than us because they win a ridiculously high percentage of premierships from finals appearances.

Definitely - although in the past few decades, we've only really shat the bed egregiously a couple of times. 2008 was poor. 2013 also pretty bad.

The thing I really love about our team right now is that we seem to have a high number of mentally strong players, and very few passengers.

If you compare to a year like 2013 for example, look at these mid-range players we had in our list at that time:

Vardy, Walker, West, Taylor Hunt, Caddy, Rivers, Motlop (I know many love Mots but he never really produced the goods in any big important moments in finals, ever)

Comparing to another bad year, like 2016 when we went down to Sydney in that horrible final, we had these plodders in our team:

Ruggles, Cowan, Caddy, Zac Smith, Menegola

The point being - this season, our bottom six is extremely balanced and deep. Picking the bottom six players is genuinely difficult, and half the blokes you'd put in that list would be extremely stiff. Who was our worst / quietest player against Brisbane? Maybe O'Sullivan?

Depth counts for so much. We could / should go all the way this year.

I hate hawthorn but I respect their high performance culture a lot. It will be a cracking game but we should get this done-we couldn't have asked for a better run in.

The list we have now is much better than the lists we had previously in the Scott era.

It shows in the fact we are 5-1 in our past 6 finals.

You blokes couldn't even have the decency to let me hate Tom Hawkins. Drove a dagger into my heart with that goal after the siren on Easter Monday then had the gall to be on TV a while afterwards and he gave me the impression he was a genuinely nice bloke. Bloody insufferable.
