Should Merrett now be removed from the captaincy? Approaching another club for a trade indicates he doesn't want to be at Essendon. How can the playing group follow him knowing that?

It's one thing about holding a player to a contract, but when it's the captain it's something else entirely. The player will play to the best to their ability if they want to be paid regardless which club they are at. However, leadership and how other players respond are harder to put KPI's to.

theyre finished as a club

wont have any fans left in 20 years so theyll go back to what they were before the 90s. a small suburban club with little support outside of it

Parish Ridley Merrett and Caddy have the talent and drive and will be very good players no matter who the coach is. The rest need a coach that will develop them and make them good players. IMO, Brad Scott's record at North proves that he is not that coach.

Your forgetting he made it clear he wanted out, and not for the first time.

Cotchin was about 26 in 2016. Merrett is much older. They offered a more than fair deal. Essendon now have a disgruntled ex leader on the list and a playing group that know it.

Merrett seems like the type that will still play full tilt next season even though he doesent want to be there
