If you can get something in next year's draft for a pick you wont use in this year's draft then you do it, even if it's not worth much.

Surely the more sensible thing to do is take the "live" selection first with McCarthy a lock either via the national or rookie draft.

But we got exactly the same players in the 2025 draft from having done so. We kicked out a pick we didn’t need for something next year that may or may not turn out to be useful. The trade at worst was neutral
