You’d think your captain would want to finish the Ashes on a high. It’s slightly concerning that he’s happy with one test in a summer and then needs another long rest. This worries me far more than his “wokeness” or any rubbish like that. He should be playing. He should want to.

It's about prolonging his career, rather than making sure he's available for a specific series in the coming months. He's almost 33 with a history of injuries. They want to manage him to make sure he's around for longer.

That’s the only alternative. They can’t have it look like the modern day player lacks ability and technique so it’s better to just produce roads and keep the batsman’s reputation high.
It’s quite funny that 20/20 cricket has forced bowlers to become more accurate and better while the batsman have plummeted to just being undisciplined sloggers who would struggle to play A grade cricket 30 years ago.
