But crucially, JUH was only contracted until the end of 2026. Getting his career back on track was the only way to guarantee a paycheck in 2027—he certainly wasn't getting another contract from the Bulldogs. Whereas Hill's contract runs until 2030, so he has 1) a lot more aggregate money to lose from re-negotiations, 2) a lot more time to **** around without worrying about an imminent loss of livelihood.

I don't think it's doable unless Hill really wanted to play for Freo and was willing to sacrifice $$$ to do it, and by all accounts he really does not want to play for Freo. In the event there's a huge change of heart by off-season 2026, we'll have a lot more data on Dudley and particularly Kickett (who I personally believe could be a Bobby Hill clone... on field only) and our list management will have a clearer view of the cost-benefit.
I think also by 2026, the AFL were finally gonna give the Bulldogs an inch if he had stayed there. Not sure if they would've let the Bulldogs sack him for breach of contract, but at the very least he wouldn't be getting full salary for nothing. Similar situation could go on here (but solely from a footballing perspective, it's maybe even worse with Bobby). Per https://archive.md/AKCTU

"Hill has now de-conditioned to such an extent that he will require months of training to get back to a level capable of playing football, and would then need a period in the VFL before any senior return. Even if he returned to the club in the next week, it would be mid-season at the earliest before he would be ready to play, and there are no short-term plans for him to return."

Whether the AFL will have the balls to actually let Collingwood sack him for breach of contract against AFLPA pressure at any point this year I'm not sure. But if it's heading in that direction (or at least a substantial reduction of pay), all of a sudden we don't have to worry about matching such an exorbitant figure.

Then again, the way things look right now, I'm not sure I'd give him much more than an SSP spot. So unless he does a massive U-turn, the threat of sacking would have to be very imminent for me to get behind the idea of it.

Hill may have won a Norm Smith, but that was an out of the box effort. He's an overrated player. He's OK (and I even would have picked him for WA to boost our speed), but I'm not sure I'd call him a star. We've already got Freddy, and that's about the level that a functional Hill would operate on average. And right now with the risk involved, Hill would have to be behind Freddy in the pecking order.

That leaves Hill behind Bolton, Reid, Switta, Freddy ... plu we've brought in Dudley, Sweid, Murray, Kickett ... I don't think Hill is someone we should be putting too much effort into.

Tarryn Thomas is probably less risk than Hill.

It really shows far Hill has fallen.

Strange hill to die on...

Wasn't the talk he had the chance to move home to WA with his wife and kids.... didn't.. now in all sorts of mess
Rumour i heard though was Collingwood were being pricks about it, saying they would entertain allowing a trade for family reasons but when both WA teams asked, the price being demanded was ludicrous

Honestly not phased in the slightest whether Bobby is a realistic chance to play at freo(considering we’ve had a few chances to make it happen and wallsy has steadfastly held up the “not interested” sign each time , just can’t see it ever happening)

But besides his potential X factor basically “completing” our squad - hopefully kickett becomes that player anyway ,
the best part of the whole potential trade would be doing the reverse Tarrant on those pricks.

🤌

More Chris Scerri chat on AFL.com.au:

On the club's final list spot, the football boss said lively half-forward Chris Scerri had been impressive as he trains through the Supplemental Selection Period.

He will get the chance to prove himself through more match simulation training over the weekend and an intraclub hitout next Friday in Bunbury.

"His work ethic and his desire to learn has been really impressive, to be honest," Brierty said, with the SSP window this week extended to March 2.

"He's working really closely with Sam Switkowski. He's sitting there listening to everything that Sam has to say in terms of our roles and structure and even the way that he sees the game.

"They're probably similar players in the way that they move from an agility perspective and just the roles that they can play in the team.

"As it stands, we have not been one to make too many quick decisions around SSPs previously … and we've waited until we've had the opportunity to see them in the intraclub hitouts.

"We'll continue to monitor and watch Chris really closely through the next two weeks, but he's obviously made a good impression."

Swita role seems the archetype. Would be very handy. He was a key out v Gold Coast in the final.

There's likely an element of truth to this, but Bobby's management did come out and say that Bobby wanted to stay at Collingwood.

The whole situation doesn't make too much sense.

The uncharitable interpretation is no-one wanted to eat his contact and at the time he felt he'd rather stay than come home on a renegotiated one. Obviously his management aren't keen on less money either.

As long as his deal isn't full of triggers with the Pies he will get paid it's value to sink beers and watch from home if he is suffering from mental health reasons.

Coming back to Perth would have needed significant protections in the revised deals.

That's as close to a confirmation that we're signing him that we can get at this point. Earmarked as a Switta understudy - I don't mind it

I’d back Dudley more than Hill tbh. With Hill would we be getting a 50+ goal small forward generational player that would transform the forward line? No.

Hill is overrated. One flashy game. But he’s small and slow requiring working off tall forwards. He isn’t substantially better than Dudley, Switkowski given how pricey he is.

Dudley with a full pre season will be a huge step up for the team
