As I mentioned great learning curve for the backline
Thought Scrimma did a great job with them
Brodie Ryan was solid and got plenty of game time
Mraz will learn plenty about blocking a fwds run at a mark
Once again forward line delivery is the key and when it was on we looked excellent
Sam will have plenty to review with but for me the big take away was - We have list depth

Good hit out today with your team, I was happy with some signs from our side and noticed a few less known players having an impact for yours. Mraz did well, Schubert looks very graceful for his size, Ward played very well and Mcdonald is ready to be a star. Around the ground we got dominated by your rucks and was disappointed we didn't try to run and jump instead of wrestle. The center bounce I don't think Meek can compete with the new jumping rule but makes up for it around the ground. Do you think Chol will be used a bit more at center bounces? Loved the battle between Atkins and Newcombe in the first half both hard as nails.

Result is irrelevant. Good hitout with both sides missing players and trialling new things. No injuries.
  • Weddle was moved midfield sometime in the second and just took the piss. Played back Q1, off Q4.
  • Ward was impressive across the whole match. Primed for a big year.
  • CMac had some iffy moments early but his link play and work ethic was super impressive.
  • Reeves gave us a noticeable advantage in the taps.
  • Perez looked quality with impressive kicking. Rider not as good.
  • Mraz had some good moments but taught a lesson by Neale.
  • Rebound from Impey/Amon was great again.
  • Lewis moved well as a link player.
  • Schubert and Greeves both looked lively with limited minutes. The former has great marking, the latter great kicking.
  • Moorey helped us regain momentum in the first half before resting for most of the second.
  • Newcombe / Nash just did what was required. A few jogging efforts lol.
  • Mackenzie didn’t look noticeably improved from last year. Did attack it hard.
  • HH’s contested work was great but his disposal wasn’t. Looks a bit quicker.
  • BMac seems to have really cleaned up his kicking.

Who’s got the review, the stats and the goss for me? Some passages that I did see looked great but I could only partially watch. Apparently frowned upon trying to watch footy in an EWP around 22kv. :(

Edit: Vando got my back.

Heard the commentators say Cats missing half the side that played in the GF maybe 6-8 times …….. did not hear once that Hawks were missing half their backline!
I would say in terms of numbers half but a higher percentage of your backline is missing with those players out.Polkinghorne did some great things for us overhead but when Barrass Hardwick and Battle are there can he do half of that is still what we need to see.

To be fair they were missing more players, including probably half their backline too (if Blicavs plays there).

Battle, Barrass, Hardwick, Gunston, Day, Ginnivan

vs

Holmes, Smith, Cameron, Danger, Mannagh, Stewart, Stengle, Humphries, Blicavs + Stanley and Martin

Mind you these are the games that you want to see guys like Mraz, Macdonald, etc. and the other backups / young talent get a chance.

👍 Having said that more than happy that Mraz got a good opportunity but I would have liked to have seen Weds playing more in the middle of the ground during the first half. We had to play him down back given the outs. His move in the second half had a significant impact on the game, was roaming the ground without the shackles and he’s been training that way over summer. He is definitely our Mr Fix it

And Ginni.
