Curnow's Coleman era is officially over.
Is it just me, or is the "Charlie Curnow to Sydney" hype train about to hit a massive brick wall?

Don’t get me wrong, he’s a decent athlete, but let’s be real about why he was bagging 70+ a year at Carlton. It wasn't just the delivery from Cripps; it was the "Blue Baggers Bonus" from the blokes in green.

The "Carlton Whistle" vs. The Sydney Reality

For years, Charlie has been the beneficiary of the most generous whistle in the league. Look at the 2025 stats: Carlton finished the home-and-away season with a +47 free kick differential (2nd in the AFL) and lead the league for total frees for (338).
Meanwhile, Sydney is historically where forwards go to get mauled without a peep from the umps. Remember how many years Buddy had defenders literally wearing him like a backpack while the umps looked the other way?

The Stats Don't Lie

Check out the dip when the whistle isn't going his way:

* 2023/24 Peak: When Carlton was the AFL’s darlings, Charlie was averaging nearly 3 goals a game and getting looked after in almost every marking contest.
* 2025 Slump: Last year at Carlton, even before the trade, the frees started to dry up a bit. He managed only 18 games for 32 goals. That is a massive drop-off for a bloke supposedly in his prime.
* The Sydney Start: He’s already played a couple of games in the red and white this year (2026). The early signs? He's getting half the looks he used to. Without those 2-3 "easy" frees inside 50 every fortnight to get his tail up, he looks like a standard high-leap forward who can be spoiled by any disciplined key back.

The Verdict

Sydney gave up three first-rounders and Will Hayward for a 29-year-old whose best footy was clearly tied to a specific umpiring "interpretation" at Ikon Park.

The Swans have bought a Ferrari but forgot that the NSW petrol doesn't have the same "additive" he was getting in Melbourne.

Have Carlton fans always been this salty or am I only just noticing now? Been carrying on all summer like Curnow left you at the altar.

I mean it happens whenever a high profile player leaves a side.

In fairness though there was also a feeling he was sooking it up and not giving his all for us towards the end, which obviously never goes over well with a supporter base. Though like tonight he was probably just struggling in hindsight. He's gonna have to find a way to impact when things aren't going his way.

Mihocek got mauled for almost 10 years
To be fair he does play up forward.

To be also fair he is a very good forward too.

So expect decent forwards like him to be double or possibly triple teamed and be on the bad end of thug and dirty tactics.

It didn't happen with Ablett Junior. People cheered him when he returned to Geelong to play as a Sun, and there wasn't much animosity at all otherwise.

He was running out of legs towards the end clearly and had some old man moments but he never really had a sharp cooked period once he came back just a decline in key facets in his game

I just mean the supporter reaction to him leaving. It stung, but it was more a case of what could have been if he stayed - not a toxic desire for him to fail, or any anger like you see with a lot of stars changing clubs.

Nice to see that Charlie the Coward went missing once again as soon as a little bit of heat was applied last night. Death, taxes, and Curnow being invisible against good opposition, right?

OP should probably have held off on this thread for a few weeks, though. The Swans play West Coast next and if past form is any indication expect Charlie to kick 10 at least and rocket himself into Coleman contention.

Hang on, Ablett had achieved everything he could under Geelong - both individually and as a teammate, and left for a financially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Then after he left, Geelong still had success - winning a Premiership and being a top team, absolutely nothing to be bitter about.

Curnow no doubt had his reasons to be frustrated, but he's aggressively jumped ship from the club that had supported him his entire career, mid-contract, with no real reason given besides 'just needed a change ay'.

His 2025 form was fairly disgraceful too, just dead set didn't even bother trying most weeks. From memory Ablett gave his all to the very end - despite Bomber giving him hell for the entirety of his final year.

It's not really apples v apples with Ablett & Geelong imo.

It took a brave person to post this right after Charlie had kicked his second goal in the first 10 minutes of the first quarter.

But, as per normal, I am right again.

Charlie is washed. Seems mainstream media is having a field day with it too.

Yeah that's fair enough. Keep in mind my comment was only in response to "happens with all star players who leave".
