Review Round 3, 2026 vs West Coast

What was the point in recruiting average 27 year olds in Wehr and Brodie?
Would prefer if we played young skinny 18 year old kids to old plodders.

We don't have any 18 year olds worth playing. That's the problem. Most of our promising young players are rookie draft and mid season draft selections. That is telling.

We're suffering after chasing a flag under Hinkley chasing players to fill gaps on the list when we kept losing preliminary finals. We now have barely any decent young talent at all, especially when compared to West Coast and North who have been picking at the top end of the draft for some time. That has stood out for me in those two losses.

Carr has inherited a list that has three A graders and once one of them goes down injured for a prolonged period of time we are stuffed. It is going to be a sizable rebuild on the way and as much as Koch doesn't like it, that is the reality of the list we have.

The only positive today was Whitlock. That kid has it and he should've played 15 games last year to accelerate his development. Outside of him, and Lai I don't think many showed enough today.

Nah with butters leaving we would have enough points to cover the pick 2 spot.
I know we will have enough points, but we will have to use the next available pick. If we have pick 2 and he gets bid on with pick 1, it’s gone. May as well finish below a possible bid and use the next available pick to get him.

The forwardline pushes up way too high and makes it difficult to score. It's just the wrong strategy, but this is still the strongest line.

The backline is a shambles. Too many non-defenders who are meant to be offensive, but aren't that either, led by Mead. Esava going down also shows why you shouldn't go cute with selections and go short.

The midfield gets all the attention, but don't show up when it counts. This is the most concerning line. It's meant to be good, but isn't. The others we know have deficiencies.

But overall, it still felt like a team that got 30-ish points up early and put the cue in the rack. Then the opposition took the momentum with accurate goalkicking and they just couldn't switch back on.

I've been defending Lukosius but he has pathetic baby hands. Hold a ****ing mark ffs
He could be one of the best forwards in the league if he just actually ****ing attacked the footy. Has all the tools except the mentality. So frustrating.

I thought we'd go 5-0, and still finish 11th. If our draw is that hard after round 6, imagine what we're looking at now. This is but the tip of the iceberg. Declining confidence, harder opposition, more injuries, are all awaiting us as the season progresses.

We are certainly in the bottom 3. Just a matter of where.
It’s going to be a long season.

I couldn’t understand why Mead was taking so many kickins, especially compared to Farrell. He doesn’t have a penetrating kick and I can remember one howler when he kicked it directly to an Eagles player.

I suspect that was a Carr instruction

Our first pick will be Cochrane. History suggests it becomes a lottery after the first round in particular. If Butters does leave a top 5 compensation pick (if they are still a thing?) might be better than a trade for some scraps.
Even if we end up 17th. Out first pick and most the Butters compensation will be taken up matching a pick 1 bid on Cochrane. Especially if the AFL introduces the bonus end of first round picks. So we'll end up with Cochrane and 1 pick in the late teens or 20s.

I do think the clean out 100% needs to extend to the recruitment team. They have had their chances. More than enough.
Throw the farm at Mackie and buy him his own personal 24K plated barrel to bend the other managers over and we'll be sweet. Maybe even the Freo list manager, they seem to have done alright.

We missed Rozee a LOT. Not only to take a tag off Butters, but his close in work gets us out of so much trouble.

Butters needs to learn some discipline, if he spent more time hinting the ball and less time wrestling we may have won.
This is also why he can’t perform in big games.

The marking was of the standard you’d expect in a hurricane.

Our small forward cadre is not even SANFL standard.

Shit all round, just shit.

Yep. Finish bottom, take the best kid with pick 1, butters leaves for pick 2, take the next best kid after bidding on walker. Get a free end of first rounder and get dougie with that and our early second after a bid at pick 4 or later. It’s stupid but the afl is incentivising it to happen with their rule changes.

I couldn’t understand why Mead was taking so many kickins, especially compared to Farrell.
It was insane. With the game on the line, and needing to regain some momentum, asking just about the worst kick in the team who's on the cusp of being dropped to take kick-ins was a coaching disaster.

It felt like that before he kicked directly to West Coast and you could sense that coming. We knew it. West Coast knew it. Mead probably even knew it.

With the way the club has been going that is what we'd do. Except if you follow Cal Twomey's example of the rules applied to 2025 draft we wouldn't get the end of first round pick.
