Autopsy Autopsy against Cats - 15 straight

This is a systemic problem. I can't remember who the forward line coach is but if he cant see and coach the forward line to actually lead at the ball carrier, then he should be out of a job. The midfield coach also needs to coach mids (and half forwards) to stop bombing it in on everyone's heads for them to take a pack mark. It's both a forward line and midfield issue.... the running patterns, and the delivery
If the fowards aren't leading at the midfielders, then they have little choice other than to bomb it inside f50...

I’m glad Nick said that. There were a lot of good things today, mostly Xerri-related, and also a lot more mistakes than a team aiming to be good should be making. Yes Geelong is good and yes the ground, but we started poorly and even when we improved the pressure kept making dumb errors that stopped us taking full advantage. And then the last quarter capitulation was dispiriting. Better than we have been, but short of what we can be. Basically we can’t afford for our forwards and mids to let the opposition have much of the ball because our defence can’t deal with it, we are the anti-Collingwood, so the most disappointing part for me was how often our mids were second to the ball or ran over it if they got there first or handed it over or failed to tackle effectively to get it back once lost.

Not interested in making big calls based on one pretty poor match, as disappointing as it was it wasn’t a debacle like we’ve seen so often. Need George and Banch or JK back and let’s see how the next few games go.

Watching at the ground, Geelong just started breaking our tackles from about 20 minutes into the 3rd quarter - tackles we'd been sticking earlier. Our pressure dropped and a few guys looked like they were running in quicksand in transition. Geelong then had a lot of clean ball into 50 and our defence was under siege.

Our backline actually held up well in the second quarter when our pressure was high up the ground and we ran well defensively. They absorbed a lot and Clarko is right, we squandered very good opportunities to score, especially off Geelong turnovers, in that quarter and the third.

Most of our forward line had a pretty ordinary night - unable to separate from their defenders when we had really good opportunities. And there was a lack of composure and execution from our mids and forwards at times.

That said, Luke McDonald has noticeably lost a yard and so is regularly under pressure and getting caught. Zurhaar gets lost back there. As a collective there's not enough speed and run. But they only conceded 5 goals in the first half when our pressure was high up the ground.

Dovaston needs to go back to the 2s for a while and develop.

Watched Powell closely - he doesn't have the tank, workrate or acceleration to play on the wing (which he was for the third quarter) or the forward flank. His opponent was putting ten metres on him in the blink of an eye streaming forward later in that quarter as the game started to get away from us.

Powell's easy to watch, coz it's all in slow motion. You don't miss a thing.

Comben, Logue, Daniel, Zurhaar, Parker, Corr, McDonald

3 of the starting defenders can't f****ng defend!

The other 4 can but have diabolically crippling deficiencies in decision making, skill execution, ect.

Comben is the only member of this group I would trust with some consistent level of performance week to week.

FMD.

Comben's got a unique ability to look great 4/5s of the time, and then make 3 or 4 completely unforced errors with ball-in-hand in most games he plays.

Parker can defend just fine, so long as he's matched up against an appropriate opponent.

I was expecting the loss, said we would go 0-6 after our 4-2 start if we didn't address our turnovers and our ability to defend/pressure better. We were fortunate Geelong was as bad as we were in the first 2.5 quarters, once they stopped turning it over and our pressure came off a bit, our turnovers and inability to defend cost us something like 10 goals in just over a quarter.

I think Clarkson is being stubborn about the side he picks. Half the players in our back six aren't even defenders and simply have no idea what they are doing.

We are going to get another football lesson next week if we just dish out the same slop.

its impossible to get quarter by quarter stats, but I swear we were leaning all the major stats at 3/4 time. In the end we lost disposals, I50s, clearances, center clearances and marks. Hell we lost hitouts 40:28. We were dominating center clearances at one point. Just totally folded after we gave those two late goals with 60s left in the third.

From the timeline, Jy kicks a goal at 29.26, then Neale 32.08, Close behind 33.16 and Neale 34.17. Three freakin red-time scoring shots in 2.1 minutes giving our lead away.

We had our chances to put a bit of a gap on the cats in those first three quarters- to many errors and to many players having down games.
We aren’t going to move up the ladder if our defensive transition is this embarrassing- even the lower sides have done it against us. What happened to the Clarkson cluster

Jeez, I’m feeling better than I have for 5 years. It’s been way worse than this.
Mate I’ve been on the positive bus for the last 10 years hoping beyond hope, reaching for the stars and this year for the first time in a decade most of my North mates have gotten on board, optimism and expectations never higher, this match against G long was really a yardstick against those expectations and the team fell well short especially given the start to this season. When will we finally stand up like a team bound for finals and win these types of matches? Seriously my daughter is 10, will she ever get to experience anything like what we did in the ‘90’s??

Some do. Poor Harry has to take a clutch shot nearly every week and he’s nailed a few. Some do but over-estimate their ability. Luke, Logue etc. Positive is it feels like we are building a team that can challenge anyone if they all play their role.
Need to weed out those who can’t.

Completely agree.

So why aren’t we?

Why are Powell and McDonald getting selected? Why are we dropping Pink for Corr? This is the frustration.

Im done with this backline. Sack the lot and start again.
****ing plodders mate I tell ya

I rate Comben, Parker and Pink.
Logue is okay.
Would’ve loved to have seen Matlock trained as a key defender but apparently we need him as another forward 🤷‍♂️
It’s an area of the ground that’s been neglected for sure, but if we nailed our opportunities in the forward half our defence would look a lot better.

Anyway, tired of thinking about this. I make no difference. I have to watch the same shit unfold week after week year after year. Bottom 4 here we come.

Why were we all extra fumbly and terrible is disposal today? It was across the board. No one was clean. No one seemed to be able to hit their kicks or handballs. Yes I get the cats bought good pressure but even out in the clear we made terrible mistakes. Curtis for 1 just was couldn’t pick the ball up
Curtis had a stinker and burned multiple opportunities to score.

The pressure and crowd got to us.

We played as well as we could for 2/3 of the game. They were way too good for us for the remaining 1/3. Yes there were players who made errors, didn’t excel etc…. But that’s where we’re at.

A lot of positives to take out of the game. The difference between being competitive against the best and not is just doing it for longer.
