Bevo and match committee tanking? That’s the only logical reason for selecting Emmett. He’s 2 years away from being ready for AFL. That selection is enough to cost us the game. We will be utterly uncompetitive in the ruck contests. Just don’t get it.

Imagine it's the covering the ground / team defense advantage as he will struggle a bit in ruck contests against Pitto. I think it’s obvious why

Smith is a one dimensional ruckman. Bevo has never cared for those types. Emmett in time will be a mobile ruck who can impact multiple areas of the ground, which Bevo loves so that’s the path we end up going down again. The issue is that as of now Emmett does not impact in any area of the ground so don’t see what we are possibly gaining from this

The current thought process is

Solid in the ruck but not good anywhere else = not versatile
Very bad forward and very bad in the ruck = versatile

Maybe Pittonet being Carlton's only real ruck option meant we'd almost be playing a man short by bringing Smith in alongside Lobb? Emmett is definitely a worse ruck at this point but at least on paper is more versatile, whilst Smith won't offer much if not rucking.

Smith helps Bevo avoid a 5th straight loss by fighting off Sweet in the dying minutes of a game. All in Smith's 2nd career game.

Rewarded by getting dropped for an even younger player who has offered nothing in the ruck or around the ground and has not warranted a callup via the VFL. Selection integrity ftw.

Even if Lobb is our designated main ruck for the game (an old player coming off a hamstring injury, btw), and Smith is a classic one dimensional ruck that can't play any other position, there's still no real argument for Emmett. Because everything Emmett provides over Smith has proven to be completely hypothetical. He's not a better, more flexible 2nd ruck - because he's been a liability all over the ground. Smith can't offer much other than ruck contests, but that's still more than what Emmett offers. He obviously isn't ready yet. Smith is...less unready.

It is what it is, Bevo as usual getting too cute with selections. We're very much used to it. If Lobb can play a high % of game time as our main ruck we'll get away with it anyway.

Agree. This is the only rational explanation.

The other explanation (non-rational) is that Bevo has never rated rucks and reckons he can win it even if Emmett has to ruck 70% of the game and get pantsed in 90% of the contests.

For that to work Emmett has to make a much bigger contribution around the ground than he has in his first few games, and much more than Smith has done.

Dont like the Emmett selection but the alternative is no better. Smith was horrible last week apart this apparent
match winning effort to half a ruck contest. Not sure what you people are watching.

Emmett can cover the ground, but can't ruck or use the ball. Smith can somewhat ruck and use the ball, but cannot cover the ground. Together, they make a half-decent backup ruck.

For that to work Emmett has to make a much bigger contribution around the ground than he has in his first few games, and much more than Smith has done.

The more you look at it the more it makes sense for Smith to make way assuming Lobb is being brought in to be #1 ruck. Carlton have played 3 ruckmen this season (Pittonet, Reidy and O'Keeffe), whilst Lewis Young has done the majority of other rucking outside of these three. Of those 4, only Pittonet is named this week, and other players named have combined for a total of 5 hit outs across the entire season. We must think Lobb can cover the majority of the game against Pittonet.

The biggest question for me is why we brought in Emmett over someone Croft, if we are looking for height elsewhere around the ground.

Tbh there isn't much difference between the impact of Smith or Emmett currently. But Emmett has a much higher potential. He's more physically developed than most first year talls too. Kinda makes sense to be fast tracking him in the circumstances.

The smartest move would have just been to split Lobb & Smith 50/50 in the ruck. Smith plays 50% game time and Lobb is somewhat protected coming off a hamstring injury but still plays 30% forward time.

Smith offers more than Emmett in the ruck and Lobb offers more than Emmett in the forward line.

I like the kid but he's not producing more than 6-7 unimpactful touches and a warm body in the ruck that will be beaten comfortably.

Based on Emmett being the back up to a bloke coming back from a decent hamstring. It is peak Bevo madness. We will lose again due to being dominated in the ruck.
