Changes Round 5 vs Hawks

Over on the Hawks board they're wondering about the inclusion of Cam Mackenzie over Scrimshaw. Mind you, there are only a couple of posts instead of 30 about Gags. We do love a chat on this board.

My point being, MacKenzie isn't going to decide the game , nor is Gallagher. It is not a matter of huge importance.

Agreed,

Key match ups will be Sellwood/Budarick/Bramble vs Watson/Moore/Ginnivan, Khamis vs Gunston, Kennedy vs Newcombe and Dolan/Hynes vs Weddle

It’s early days but hasn't really shown anything to indicate top 10 potential. Not even sure he'll reach top 6-8 at our club let alone Top 10 in the comp. As you say, lacks the intensity at this stage of typical A-graders. I also haven't seen any real elite traits that make me go 'Wow!" But early days, jury still out.
I might be on my own but I’ve seen plenty, his vision and hands are absolutely elite inside. Just does the little things you notice in the contest, the little tap ons getting the ball to the right spots. Kids a stud IMO

I think Hynes has top 10 midfielder in the comp potential to be honest. He shows promise of an elite stoppage and vision game. Finds space inside effortlessly, reminds be a bit of Pendles the way he glides through traffic. Elite hands too and a good kick.

My only concern is whether he has the intensity to get to that level, can be a bit lazy at times but to be fair that can be said about a lot of 20yos who take that extra time to realise just how ‘on’ they have to be at the top level. I thought his intensity & aggression in the VFL last week was the best I’ve seen so obviously it was made out to him as something to improve

Hynes is a mile off being even just an AFL level mid at our club let alone Top 10 in the AFL.

He’s lucky he got a recall so soon after getting dropped. Was woeful to start the year and needs significant improvement in his game which should be done with ongoing games in our VFL’s midfield.

Yeah its a funny one. We have the experience profile of a rebuilding team, not a contending team. History would say that it's very hard to win most of your matches if you have 10 players under 50 games. Hopefully we can be the exception.

We did it plenty of times in 2015!

Assuming a player like Gallagher is never in our best side when everyone is fit, and if he doesn't have the scope to develop into best 22, then why not make him a tagger/run with/defensive midfielder?
My point being that Bont, Richards, Libba, Kennedy, Sanders can match it with any midfield in the comp, but if we have several injuries then Gallagher doesn't come-in and and try to go head-to-head with opposition guns, he instead comes in and tries to nullify Newcombe/Dawson/Holmes/Serong.
He seems to have the tank, speed and strength to be a perfect fit for this role.

Coming home game for Jaques against the Cats so if he doesn't come back in next week you know we really dropped him this week.

I wasn’t suggesting he was dropped and masked as managed.

More just find it curious to manage him 1 game after the bye. Would make more sense to manage him in the middle of the 3 x 6 day breaks.

Jacques was ordinary last week. He has been dropped.

Im hoping like we've seen with Baker Gallagher has calmed down abit since his last senior game and doesnt bite off too much, instead playing to his limitations. If he picks when to use his speed more wisely and doesn't try to pick off difficult kicks he will go along way to covering all the issues others have pointed out.

I think that is a good comp. Baker went from unplayable to one of our most important role players by just playing more to his limitations with ball in hand. Hopefully Gallagher can have a similar transformation

Baker probably offers more off the ball also but the Gallagher athletic profile is there which is why I haven’t totally given up on him as a product. As others have said he actually had decent goal sense and it’s probably the only time I trust his kicking is when it’s a shot on the run. We’ll see, I’m not confident but stranger things have happened

Our lack of developing young talent depth that we would have drafted in 2017-21, was our weakness in 2022-23 - what I like to call "the McComb conundrum". That we were effectively forced to pick McComb in the absence of a 2nd round draft pick we may have drafted four years ago and kept developing.

2017-2021 mature agers we drafted with no previous AFL experience:
Gowers, Gardner, Scott, Parker, McComb

We then sort of overcorrect from 2022 and draft a bunch of youngsters to develop:

Busslinger, Clarke, Gallagher (in a very weak draft)
Sanders, Croft, Freijah, Smith, O'Donnell-cum-Rypstra
Hynes, Jacques, Dolan, Kennedy, Walker
Carmichael, Emmett, Darcy

2022-23 recruitment of mature agers with no previous AFL experience:
(this has intentionally been left blank)

2024: Davidson
2025: Sellwood, Lewis

I see nothing with Hynes unfortunately. If only Reid had stuck through

I look at Hynes as a Bailey Humphrey impact type player eventually. Won't ever be getting 25 touchers a game but could get 10-15 impactful, hitting the scoreboard type involvements.

Far too early to tell with Coop. Has improved his fitness a lot since coming over, so the signs are there he’s a hard worker. Not sure we’ve clearly defined a role for him at either grade as yet either.

I think the directive from the coaching staff re Hynes ia "keep taking the game on & you'll come good."

He's got the body type -he just needs to build the body.

Yeap huge gap. Reid faster, better skills and just as tough. Hynes still has an upside but do not see hm ever getting close to Reid. Another reason think how badly we got screwed with the Smith deal.
