Player Watch #10: Colby McKercher - re-signed until the end of 2028

He's still developing. There is every chance it might just click for him this week or it might not.

He's super talented and quick so the moment it clicks will come rapidly.
agree, needs a game where he has a few run and bounces . At the moment is getting caught as not strong enough to break tackles. Either needs to play behind the ball or allowed to play as a loose forward with a licence to play up and down the ground. Players need to use him as a run and carry player and he needs to get in positions to be used - get handballs after a mark

Well continually playing him in the seniors isn't the way forward but there seems to be an outcry if one would suggest such a thing.

I watched the replay and he looked alot better on the second look (as often happens). The stuff that stood out first time looked indecision related and there were times when he went and put himself in potential harms way but won the ball well.

I think Colby is one of if not the quickest on our list. He goes for the 1-2 due to not realising we are one of the slower teams of the comp even though he can pull it off in a vacuum, he is very catchable

The quickest guy on our list has a side gig as a circus tent pole.

Yep just imagine if he had FOS’ ability to break a tackle. More strength in his hips and then watch him get into space and use his greatest asset, his speed. Another preseason or two and watch out.

Okay, let's have the discussion.

When he has the ball in our hands and we're streaming forward, he's good.

At all other times, he's a liability. He absolutely cannot defend or spread in transition when the opposition has the ball and is ineffective at best (and actively detrimental at worst) running the other way.

And that's a massive problem considering we're playing him at HBF and on the wing.

I'd say he needs a spell in the VFL, but there's a half-dozen players I'd drop before Colby.

But geeeeeee I am concerned.

He’s a lazy **** pure and simple.

It’s ok, I have faith Tassie will bail us out for a bad draft pick.

Clarko is enabling his shit efforts by constantly selecting him. Kid needs a reality check because he ain’t that ****img good and others in his draft class are going past him at a rate of knots.

Same goes for Duursma.

Hammering a kid in his second year who's being played completely out of position is deadset laughable but it's even more so when you consider he contributed way more tonight than the likes of Corr, McDonald, Tucker, Stephens, Darling and Zurhaar.

How about focusing at that end of the shed.

I'm not concerned per se but I agree. A stronger team would have no issues dropping this kid and telling him what he isn't doing well enough. Can only hope he is listening off field and during the week but you'd want to see signs of it soon. The last thing our midfield needs is another one way runner.

Man, there's no excuse for his lack of defensive effort. Players like him are the reason LMac, Corr and the like are on a hiding to nothing. He didn't contribute more good to the team today than half of the blokes you've mentioned, and we need to stop excusing his complete lack of interest in any situation that doesn't involve him sprinting with the ball

I think Corr and McDonald were clearly better than Colby last night.

I agree with you on Tucker/Stephens which is why I suggested dropping them in the 'changes' thread. And I didn't suggest dropping Colby.

Darling and Zurhaar both had stinkers, but so did every single one of our forwards, with maybe the exception of PC.

Agreed. Needs a spell playing in the guts for 5-10 games. Needs to develop any sort of defensive game.
