Player Watch #12: Jy Simpkin - [The Age] Jy's mgmt have sounded clubs out about their interest in Jy as he wants more midfield time

Like others have said ,to slow for the midfield but for some reason he can’t kick over 30 meters now. We saw this 2 weeks ago when he avoided having multiple shots at goal from around the 40 meter mark .

Disappointing after all the pre season report's about Jy, looked fit and love his attack on the footy but it counts for nothing if you can't make it to the contest. Think his physical deficiencies are going to stop him from being a solid AFL player. Hopefully someone multi quotes my Jy criticisms in the future if he can turn it around but I can't see it happening.

I just don't see a trick. Kicking is terrible (distance and accuracy), can't find it, not quick. Plays tough sometimes, but that can be the found in the VFL.

I hope it's mismanagement, because he looks shot at the moment.

isn't known for his contested ball, was known for zip and being creative around goals. His overall career numbers don't look horrific, I reckon it's a confidence thing.

We need to look for him on the outside and get him some cheap stats, can go along way to building your confidence.

Is he being mismanaged? I don’t profess to know the intimate details but to me it seems his confidence is shot and he could benefit from a spell in the VFL. Clearly playing him badly out of form in the AFL isn’t working.

- Lowers eyes and demonstrates excellent vision and ability to hit inside 50m targets
- Composed with ball in hand
- Precision kick to target
- Finishes well from general play

He was tipped to go between 5 and 8 but he broke his leg in his draft year. Still i remember wanting Florent that year and Sydney picked him up the pick before us.

I can sense something about him, buts just can't see much. I hope a coach and development team get it right.

His points of difference are

- evasiveness
- X factor.

Both these can be a huge advantage in the right side/environment.

His kicking though has become deplorable and I have been to training a few times and its the same there.

I think Simpkin - perhaps more than any other youngster on the list - is a victim of the Scott mismanagement era and will be the one to benefit most from fresh ideas and management.

I bet the same ones writing him off wrote Drew Petrie off...some of us are old enough to remember the early days of Boomer and Simmo...even Carey’s early seasons were inconsistent

It's now his 3rd season and is going backwards. Has really only shown some glimpses which isn't enough. He should be tracking a whole lot better. I don't think he has the physicality and hunger to make it as a decent standard AFL player imo.

Someone posted the past decade of top 3 Draft picks yesterday over the past decade and there are a lot of busts in there

I can’t predict his future but I know that someone who has wanted only to play AFL since he was a little kid would be trying his guts out to correct things
