Retired 14. Liam Jones

Really surprised that Jones retired, I just assumed he would end up getting the jab or waiting for the Novavax or whatever it’s called, I’m still qui intrigued by the situation and how Liam came to this decision, im surprised Liam didn’t accept or push to be placed on the inactive list, take the small amount of money, stay in the list and hope the AFLs position/Victoria’s position changes, in this instance we would still have replaced him in the list.

I have no ill feeling towards Jones, I don’t understand the decision as so many work places will require you to have the jab, but that’s up to him, just surprised he chose to retire.

I agree - he chose to retire instead of going on the inactive list and coming back after mandate is lifted. In my opinion because he was determined to send an anti-vax message.

"Carlton will ask the AFL for the right to take an extra player in the draft because of the unusual timing and circumstances of Jones’ retirement. They are unlikely to get it.

Other clubs expected the Blues to petition the AFL for a compensatory draft pick commensurate with losing a player of his age and wage due to exceptional circumstances. That is, to treat him like a lost free agent.
Sounds to me like a snarky reporter who didn't get a story.

Jones just didn't want to make his reasons public. I'd bet Carlton know, and that they could be shared with the AFL if need be.

If Carlton don't get an exemption to remove Jones from their list, I'd really doubt that the AFL would use that as a reason.

Knowing this clubs' luck, the rules will change for the unvaccinated next year sometime, any club looking for a tilt at finals will see him in the mid season draft, snap him up and go on to win a premiership with him at FB, probably back at the Dogs... Fairytale stuff, more nightmares for Carlton supporters. This is the way.

I didn’t expect us to get a ‘special’ pick at say end of round 1 or 2 but for the AFL not allow us another pick overall, well that would just about say it all.

I honestly think they should have allowed the club access to list a state league player. The policy change that forced Jones' retirement is months old. Lists are built over years.

And the AFL will rightly say he was not 'forced' to retire.

From Lloyd's media work it seems clear we have at least one other player on the men's list that hasn't received their first shot yet. Let's hope that doesn't turn out to be another issue.

Too logical, sensible and compassionate for the AFL.

What we really need is a club like GWS, GC or Geelong to have some players not want to take it. They will look after their pets at the drop of any hat, but whipping boys / cash cows like Carlton and West Coast will get no such love.

They probably would do it for Gold Coast or GWS, not so much for Geelong.

Honestly i would prefer it if Jones' salary next season is wiped out of the cap, so we have extra pennies in the kitty to give Sam Walsh for his (hopeful) extension over summer.

I think you make good points honestly, probably right up until the last. Jones absolutely kills us in the short term and badly affects our prospects in 2022, but it's not a doomsday scenario that will have long lasting affects like the salary cap punishments, that's a bit over the top.

We are however one injury away to someone else (don't even want to mention his name) from having 100 points kicked on us every week. Most of that blame has to land on the club, although they somewhat mitigated it by picking up Young, I'm just not sure he's ready for the rigorus of 22 AFL games as a key man. We probably should have had someone else developing for the past year or two and many have thought that for some time even before Jones. What's done is done now though.

My view is we probably need to pick up a mature KPD and I don't know if there are many real answers here. Dan Talia seems set on retirement and there are reports he is a bit cooked body wise. Blake Schlensog may not get to us if we are unable to select him as a DFA (not sure what the AFL will let us do). Jack Maibaum (23) and Jack Leslie (26) are both former AFL listed players who filled the KPD spots in the VFL team of the year, but I'm not totally sure they are up to it, others may be able to fill us in on that. I haven't heard of any other 'buzz' matures in the state leagues outside of Sam Skinner, who was duly picked up by Port before Jones retired. I said initially when the Jones news broke I'd like us to chat to Rory Thompson, but we kind of got pipped on the swoop by North (lol) and we'd want to be confident his body is good after such a long time out with injury. He probably remains my biggest hope that we target - don't know whether to laugh or cry about that.

It's a bit of a worry to be honest.
Charlie Dean and Leek Alleer are worth a look at and likely to be later picks in the draft…but I agree it’s a worry!

I knew there was another club, but I had forgotten which one it was... and I didn't want to name the wrong club. I thought it was the Roos, but... well... better to say nothing than appear a fool. And I've done that a few too many times :D

Neither will be really ready to compete at AFL level right away. I know Dean is a touch older but he still needs development, I can only imagine the results if he was placed on players Jones would normally have taken over 22 games. Supporters of this club are about to realise if they didn't already, how big Jones was for us.

I also doubt either of those players make it to our pick (maybe Dean?), which if we are allowed to take one in the ND, will be one of the very last. It's more than likely we have to take a player in the SSP, which is like having the last pick of the rookie draft, albeit you get to let them train with you in the pre-season to cast an eye over them.

It's a pretty dire situation.

Maybe I am naive, but I honestly don't believe the situation is as grim as you suggest, especially (and i really pray to the spirit of Don Revie) Voss and our new coaching panel makes sure our talented midfield core and flankers put more emphasis on the defensive and the accountability aspects of their game.

I am pretty confident we will be okay, both in the short and long term, defensively

It's fine to be positive, absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I just think we were already susceptible to scoring as a team and taking out one of our top 10 players (at least) in his prime or close to it, really hurts us - especially when it's a KP player and we are very thin in that area. Jones is a really great player and we rely (relied) on him so much. It's a massive blow.

I'm feeling good about Voss, but he was not a top preference of mine for coach unfortunately and I still have some reservations about that whole situation and the way the club handled it, but I have an onwards mentality about it. I don't really see Voss as a panacea for our woes and he has his work cut out for him, although a whole new coaching panel is definitely a positive for our club. Maybe we make it work and it's not a big deal, but if I was a betting man I reckon we are really going to feel it. We also don't have Casboult to swing and cover anymore, he's done a more then decent job of that in the recent past when needed.

We really need to start winning now with the profile of our list is my view. I don't think the sky is falling but it's a pretty big setback and that speaks to how unprepared the club would have been if Jones or Weitering sustained a long term injury. We should have had a promising, developing KPD for a couple of years by now. Jones probably would have had at least two top form years left and maybe one or two after that, he's impossible to replace at this point.

We shouldn't be getting anything extra.
What the Club has asked for, and what would seem to be very reasonable given the circumstances, is for Jones to be considered off our list now so that we have a spot available for the draft, rather than having to wait until the SSP. The previous list lodgement date is arbitrary, and if it were a week later we wouldn't have an issue.

Great. Then play him unvaccinated and it’s all good.

The policy forced his retirement. To suggest it didn’t is just dishonest double-talk.

Nope, he made a decision to retire just like all the other players made a decision to keep playing. Nothing unavoidable occured that resulted in him having to retire, he decided he did not want to adopt the new AFL policy that was a requirement of his employment.

… he decided he did not want to adopt the new AFL policy that was a requirement of his employment.

The new policy forced him retire. That’s what happens when you change the status quo. If the policy was that only players over 200cm could play, you’d concede he would have been forced to retire. You’re confused here by the illusion of choice.

Let’s say you went with your family to the park for a nice picnic in the sunshine. Halfway through, it starts raining and some drunk skinheads turn up and start playing loud death metal and swearing. You could say if the family ended their picnic at that point that it was their choice, but it would be equally as truthful to say that choice was made for them by changing circumstance.

if you don’t want to see the other side of the coin fine, but it sure does exist.
