Very happy for Jonesy.
Confidence is so crucial to performance and that game yesterday should add to that.
I love how bolts pointed out that it was only one game but credited Jones for accepting the move to the backline with eagerness.
I can't help but think that Jones feels real buy in from the club to him as a player and person and that trip to Halls Creek with Walks and SPS was a profound statement to him that he is valued at the blues.
Great investment from the club and couldn't be happier for Jones.

Liam Jones is like a fish that's been called dumb his whole life because he couldn't climb a tree.
Lmao what an analogy!

C'mon Jonesey - smashed your first game as a defender at the top level. Now let's back it up and stay in form for the rest of the year. And then maybe premiership fullback if you don't mind...

Yeah well, he's no longer a fish out of water...

May he lead us to the premiership pond and... Ah nuts, I'm no good at this :)

Haha, I love the thread title. Everybody loves an underdog story, whipping boy comes good. Still early days so I don't want to get carried away but if he keeps playing like yesterday he will have a long and fruitful career ahead of him. 198cm, great closing speed and agility, nice kick. Career was over two months ago, it's remarkable, good on him.

Don't laugh but one of Liams spoils in the last was an open palm straight into Daisy's waiting arms for a terrific clearance just like the headbanded one used to. ( Daisy stuffed up the kick but...) and I thought Doully is back!

I did notice that actually. Watching it looks almost as if he spoils with a partially open hand. I would even suggest is was, at least, semi intentional...

The next few weeks will actually be a really interesting insight into how our player development is progressing. LJ has always been good first up after a spell, but 2nd, 3rd up started going back to the field. Happy to eat some humble pie on "the beast" if we get another quality defensive option out of it. Good luck to Liam, future hasn't been written yet.

I thought his kicking was exceptional too, a few backwards kicks put him under pressure and he dealt with it brilliantly, very cool in his first game back in the team.
I reckon Dai kicking id improving weekly .I've seen him do a few ripping passes but sometimes peps ony notice his shockers ..

Some things I noticed:

- his strong marking means we have another avenue to win possession and set up play from the backline, over Rowe's 'spoil at all costs' approach
- his decent disposal means we can use him more from kick-ins so that our playmakers aren't wasted standing 20m in the back pocket
- his leap and extra reach means forwards will struggle if it's not put out in front of their chest.

I thought he played a good game until I watched the replay - it was no 'role player' performance, we've got a serious defender on our hands if that becomes his standard

Only at CFC could we sack a bloke one day and immortalise him the next .......

Who'd have thunk it ...

Talk about keeping a lid on
He has played one good game and everyone jumps on the bandwagon
And no im not one of them as i said on this board a few months ago jones should be brought in and played back and i literally got laughed at and others on here said he should never get another afl game again and his papers were stamped

I felt we became far more threatening on rebound when White went out of the side. Now that Jones is in place of Rowe, I reckon we can go up another gear offensively again.

As much as I've loved Rowes work defensively, Jones ability with ball in hand is light years ahead (I.e. is not limited to kicking only sideways and backwards) and will make us a more dangerous side on transition.

A couple of Jones kicks out of defence yesterday I've never seen White or Rowe make in their careers.

Jones kick to Jed Lamb on the wing in particular, whilst lamb didn't mark the ball, Jones kicked it to him outnumbered and placed the ball in the only spot where lamb could get his hands to it and the GWS players couldn't. Literally kicked it to the only foot of the ground available to him which wouldn't have resulted in a turnover. Forced a free kick our way, and if it didn't it would have gone out of bounds anyway. Give that ball to Rowe or White and 999 times out of 1000 and it is a turnover and GWS shot on goal.

The Temple of Liam Jones ???

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Look, before anyone completely loses perspective (may be too late, they already have) you have to consider where we have been before with this chap.

When he came to Carlton, he trained as hard as any player could in a pre-season period in order to dramatically improve his fitness & body frame. He got selected in the seniors as a forward as that is why he was recruited in the first place. He showed some serious glimpses at times but this was considerably outweighed by patches of bad skill errors, poor kicking for goal and virtually being a non-effective player in a key position. He was lauded & put on a pedestal by many an online fan early in the piece to such an extent that it bordered on blind faith. Fast forward to 2017 and his place on the playing list has been in jeopardy for some time and 99.9% of ALL Blues fans had him being dumped at the end of this season.

Bolton and his team knew they had to try something before tossing him on the footy scrapheap and realistically, there was only one option for him. Clearly Jones embraced the opportunity and has worked hard to retune his natural game to play at the other end of the ground & as has been pointed out by the NB watchers, had some very solid performances in the seconds.

However, he has played one senior game as a key defender ....... one !!!

Yes, it was pretty damn good but I point out, we have been down this path once before with Jones. Played quite well in a handful of his early games and gave us some genuine hope for the future, he then plateaued badly followed by a gradual decline which saw him sent to the seconds with the belief that he was never to return.

I have said this many times before, at 198cm & 98kgs, he is the perfect specimen to hold down a key position. Now that he has been thrown this last ever lifeline to make it in the AFL as a defender, he is giving it everything he has got. This is a terrific opportunity for him and for the club because if he can become a consistent performer at senior level, he provides us with an aggressive gorilla minder plus an automatic replacement for Sam Rowe.

I can understand why supporters feel the need to go off their head after his stunning performance last night but I would prefer to see some measured glee from them right now. I also want to see him back up this performance with a string of games at that same level of grit & resilience. In other words, I want to see some genuine consistency from him first & foremost.

I want him to succeed (never thought I'd be writing that bit) as we all stand to benefit big time but "one swallow doesn't make a summer" & "a broken clock is right twice a day".

Who'd have thought the devil would be such a whimpy, whiney kill joy.

Our collective (over) reaction is not just an acknowledgement of his excellent performance, it also celebrates the rise of the ridiculed and unwanted.
