I've been looking everywhere but to no avail, so i'll try here.

Does any have any info saved on the 2000 AFL draft. I want to see profiles of the top 20, and what their reputations were in U/18's, and compare to how they are going now.

The Crows have tended to take South Australians in recent drafts; this year, they went the other way, choosing a young Victorian ruckman (Agwin) with their first choice and not picking a local until selection 53.

Agile left-foot CHB/CHF who showed versatility by going into the ruck for WA in AFL U18s. Only lightly built at the moment but contests strongly and is deceptively quick. Has an outstanding natural leap recording AFL draft camp high of 95cm for the running vertical jump.

Mobile forward who showed promise for Victoria Metro in AFL U18 national championships providing a target across half forward and winning praise from coach David Dickson. In top 10 with his vertical leap at the AFL Draft Camp he is coached by Gary Colling at the Dragons.

How they fared


Unlike last year, when they had three of the first five picks, the Dockers didn't have much of a hand in this draft, having traded away early choices for Peter Bell. They went for tallish flanker types in McPhee, Woods and Scott Thornton.

"We didn't need to get any more on-ballers - we've already got Bell and Cook and Hasleby and Toia. So we were trying to get guys who are about 186cm and higher. We've got three guys who are 188cm, 189cm and 192cm. It's a bit of extra height in the club."

Strong mid-fielder who could play seniors next season. Long left-foot kick, did not play much football last season, but with limited options and plenty of talented youngsters already on their list, the Cats could afford to take a punt.

How they fared

The Cats barely had any presence in the draft. They did not have a selection until No.44 and used their second and third choices (the minimum is three picks) to redraft players they had already cut. They are either happy with the state of their list or didn't rate highly the quality and depth of the draft pool.


Coach Mark Thompson:


"We picked Josh Hunt who didn't play a lot of footy last year and the other young fellow that we had our eyes on just went before our pick ... It was always going to be tough, with 44 and then 71, there was a long break in between. We are not too unhappy. If you combine the trade period and the draft we have four new players in a year where you are reducing lists by two, so it's not too bad."



HAWTHORN

Had a consistent TAC Cup championship at U18 level for Victoria Metro and an excellent year with the Dragons finishing equal third in the best and fairest from limited games.

The Hawks were not major players, having given up their first pick for Shaun Rehn in trading and their second round choice designated for father-son recruit Stephen Greene. Hawthorn was in the happy and unusual position of not needing to find talls.

How they fared

The Dees were yet another club with only a cameo role - thanks to the AFL's draft penalties for cap rorting, they didn't have a pick between 16 and 64. They did well, however, to secure Scott Thompson at selection 16, who will add to their increasingly formidable midfield.

Melbourne recruiting manager Craig Cameron: "It was pretty good. We had draft penalties in the second and third round, so we had to sit there while a lot of guys went. We are happy with our first pick (Scott Thompson). Thought he was a top 10 selection, so we are happy he got through."



PORT ADELAIDE

12 Shaun Burgoyne

Skilful, evasive half-back flanker who is a powerful kick. Member AIS/AFL Academy squad and SA U18s representative in 1999/2000. Brother to Peter and played seniors with Magpies this year. Speed his outstanding feature at the AFL draft camp.

Debuted in seniors this year at half-back and played some fine games, winning Glenelg's most outstanding junior player award. Member of AIS/AFL Academy squad and All Australian at AFL U18s this year. Wingman with excellent kick and good balance. A consistent player for WA in the U18 nationals. Made his senior debut late in the season for East Fremantle, played finals.

Drafted the brothers of three players on the list. Could only assist with team harmony.

Half forward/midfielder with good goal sense, marking ability and finishing skills. Enjoyed excellent season winning All Australian honors in victorious Victoria Country U18 team and won the best and fairest in division one at the AFL U18 national championships and with the Murray Bushrangers.

Excellent overhead mark with a great work ethic, continually presenting himself across half-forward. Shows great courage in contests. Won All Australian honors in AFL U18s representing Queensland and played in the Southport premiership side. His overhead marking shone out at draft camp.

2 Justin Koschitzke

Key forward and good pack mark. Mobile with good disposal skills and kicks goals. Key player for the victorious NSW/ACT team in the AFL U18 national championships this year averaging 10 marks per game and winning All Australian honors. Has a good football brain, clean hands and can play forward, back or ruck.

Powerful inside midfielder with terrific pace and a long kick. Played with Drouin under his father Kevin in 1999 before having an impressive 2000 which included representing Victoria Country in the AFL U18 national championships. Nephew of Geelong champion Gary, he finished third in the club best and fairest.


52 Amon Buchanan

(Geelong Falcons) 19, 177cm, 76kgs

Exceptional goal-kicking left-footer. Scored over 60 goals this year, including five in the TAC Cup grand final where he was judged best-afield. Wins the ball well in most situations.

54 Jarrad Sundqvist</p>

Running half-back who is good overhead and reads the game well. Excellent hand and foot skills and holds his feet well. SA U18s representative this year and played reserves and U19s level at Glenelg.

The Swans had given up their first and third picks for Paul Williams. They went for another big football name when they took Luke Ablett with their first pick (24).


Recruiting manager Rick Barham: "History might show this draft is not as good as what's gone down in the past, so as a consequence we gave up our first and third picks for Paul Williams. Picking at 24, 52 and 54 are not the greatest picks but we went for some developing kids. Luke Ablett and Amon Buchanan could both play next year."


WEST COAST

5 Andrew McDougall

A calf injury interrupted his 2000 season after an exciting start when he won the Barassi Medal for the best and fairest player in the international rules series against Ireland in April. Strong overhead, a good kick for goal and very mobile.

Quick half forward/rover with class and goal kicking ability. Impressive member of Australian U17 representative team against Ireland 2000 and All Australian U18 selection capped off an excellent representative year.

Aggressive and talented defender who made his mark at Fremantle two years ago but struggled in 2000. New surroundings may help him to recover his best form.



How they fared


The Eagles took the safe option and drafted a local boy, Perth's Andrew McDougall, with their first pick. He has the mobility to develop into the key defender or forward. They went local again with pick two, grabbing Daniel Kerr from Ken Judge's happy hunting ground, East Fremantle.

Recruiting manager Gary Merrington:

"We didn't purposely put the flavor on Western Australians, but we needed a tall and we picked McDougal first for the long term. With a new lease of life, (Trent) Carroll might be OK."

10 Jordon McMahon (Glenelg)

Super quick left-foot wingman who had injury interrupted year after representing Australia against Ireland at U17 level in April. His 8.16seconds for the agility run at the AFL Draft Camp was the camp's best.

Medium inside mid-fielder from Sale who is good overhead and has excellent vision. Has good finishing skills which he displayed for Victoria Country in the AFL U18 National Championships this year. Runner up in Power's best and fairest award.

Medium forward/defender who is agile and a strong mark for his size. Reads the play well and cool under pressure. Being from Albury he represented the NSW/ACT U18s team which won Division 2 this year in the AFL national championships.

The Doggies, once devoted to recycling in the Carlton-Kangaroos style, have taken a turn towards a youth policy since Scott Clayton arrived at the club. Their first choice, Jordon McMahon, was highly rated by a number of clubs and might easily have been picked in the top four. He will need time, however, to fill out before he can become a regular senior player.

Gained a bit of a cult following due to his mad goal explosions in the reserves amongst the Box Hill faithful and is always good to watch.

Lightly built forward, defender or ruckman with outstanding pace athleticism which he displayed at the AFL Draft Camp which included 85cm running vertical jump (top 10), agility (top 20) and anaerobic best score (top 10).

Usually plays in the reserves, but played a handful of senior games to my memory. Never disgraces himself, never gives it and takes a good grab.

Hard running defender who kicks the ball with good depth. Plays close and in front and runs off very well. Queensland U18 representative in 1999 and 2000.

Came to BH from the Brissy rookie list and made an impressive start before falling to injuries for most of the season.


Laurence Angwin was also in this draft class, but he didn't play a single game for Box Hill during the season, so I won't include him.

We've done fairly well from that crop, Didak and Cloke were held back and developed for a year but established themselves as valuable contributors this season. Lonie started well, faded a little at the start of this year after struggling with O.P then finished the year with an exceptional finals series. Wakelin had a average season in his first year with us but was rock solid and rarely beaten in 02.

Richards is a project player and won't see action til 2004 at least.

Indeed- it shows that pick 15+ still results in some superstars occasionally.

You don't think he'll get a (small) run next year?? I recall Malthouse actually expected him to get a game this year. I think we may see him in the seniors.

Geez we did pretty well there-obviously having pick 3 helped, but we got quality right down the line. More good work from the best recruiter around.

Hawthorn did just fine nabbing Ries Greene (F/S?) and Lonie with crappy picks. I reckon the Saints might pick up a dozen AA spots with their top 2.
