Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

I wasn't caught out. I think his numbers show he has been useful to his club. But the numbers don't show he is better than another player with less impressive stats.

I've tried to shift nothing. I said I don't think you can say somebody who averages 16 disposals and almost a goal a game is better than someone who averages 13 disposals a game. I believe you can get a general idea of the output of a player absed on stats. I don't believe you can say for sure whether a player is better than another based on stats though. I honestly don't know how much simpler I can put that for you.

You started whinging at me because apparently I went off topic talking about importance. You accused me of initiating the talk about importance and trying to divert it from the actual topic, which was about the best player. I then showed you the post where you originally brought it up, and I responded to it. But don't let that get in the way.

Whatever you reckon mate. I know what I've read.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

It's amusing you follow up your first line with that utterly biased bullshit.

I admit my bias however, my claim isn't the hogwash you speak of.

How many 2nd year KPP can move like Ryder, has the skills of Ryder, the athleticism? Not many I can tell you that much.

This guy has Adam Goodes stamped all over him.

He is extremely talented. But in no way an Adam Goods types player.

The athleticism that Goodes possesses is amazing. Ryder doesn't have it, nor does any other AFL player. Ryder is well above average in terms of mobility/athleticism for a KP player. But put him up against the elite midfielders in Judd and Bartel and do you really think he'll even stand a chance? Sorry, but I can't see that. I can see him being a premier ruckmen/backman.

Goodes can match it with the elite smaller men at ground level, and also the big men. He's a freak.

Whilst Goodes has supberb athleticism he is 6'4'', Ryder is 6'6'' - there is a big difference. I would argue that bar his leap, Pavlich is as equally as athletic as Goodes.

I don't buy the "do you really think he'll even stand a chance against a Judd et al" argument - Why would you throw someone such as Ryder in the middle to tag Judd? I would be more concerned about how I can exploit Ryder's height, skills and mobility rather than worry about pacy midfielders.

This has already happened, in the second game last season. It was a good contest.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Muston & Ellis will feature in the top 10 at season's end, but that is irrelevant to this point.

1. S. Pendlebury
2. M. Murphy
3. P. Ryder
4. G. Birchall ( talk about underated)
5. D. Thomas
6. S. Higgins
7. S. Hurn
8. N. Jones ( talk about overated)
9. M. Clark
10. C. Bartram/R. Warnock( a star)

You=Joke.

Ryder v Buddy will be fascinating in years to come. At the moment Buddy has the edge in body strength, also Hawthorn's superior midfield compared to Essendon will also work favourably toward Buddy.

They played on each other during the rematch, Buddy kicked 4 goals I think, but Ryder played a very good game considering we got smashed in the middle.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

I'm confused.

Are people re-doing the draft to suit what their teams require at this present time, or based on current form and development or as players in the future?

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

1 (1) Marc Murphy
2 (5) Scott Pendlebury
3 (2) Dale Thomas
4 (12) Nathan Jones
5 (13) Shannon Hurn
6 (7) Patrick Ryder
7 (42) Robert Warnock
8 (11) Shaun Higgins
9 (14) Grant Birchall
10 (15) Travis Varcore
11 (43) Andrew Swallow
12 (61) Matthew Stokes
13 (33) Sam Gilbert
14 (60) Clint Bartram
15 (9) Mitch Clark
16 (4) Josh Kennedy
17 (3) Xavier Ellis
18 (36) Jake Edwards
19 (10) Marcus Drum
20 (41) Rhan Hooper

Found it alot harder then i thought it would be but if you dont see it being right make your own i know a few Hawthorn supporters will fine this interesting

Agree with Ellis. Hasn't done much so far. But I would move Birchall into the top 5. Jones, Hurn, Ryder and Warnock are behind Birch.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

I really rate Dale Thomas, I'd have him over Murphy anyday.

There's a lot of good players Richmond missed out on by selecting JON at #8. I think he'll improve this year but not sure how much. :thumbsu:

Some at the club have said he'll be the best kid of the lot - a big statement!

Ryder behind Birchall - only in your dreams.

Only Murhpy, Pendlebury and perhaps Thomas are ahead of Ryder at the moment.

People lets not forget Ryder is a KPP (longer to develop) so the fact that he had such a solid start to '07 is quite impressive.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Firstly, Jones>>Birchall and you have Birchall 4 places higher. You explain that opinion.

Birchall has been the better player in the first 2 years they have been on AFL lists.

Birchall has more improvement left in him.

Jones won't get much better than he alreday is.

Jones is a good player, but Birchall's skills, height, and pace will make him a formidable player.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Here's a different take...

Who would you take now if you had the same picks? Taking into account that extra players have been added to your list also... For the Hawks:

3: Pendleberry (instead of Ellis)
6: Ryder (instead of Dowler - we need defenders more than forwards. Picked up Thorp in 2006 and Roughy performing well forward).
14, 18, 22 - Keep Birch, Bailey and Muston.

Would consider using one of the first two picks on Higgins, although hopefully Rioli can fill the small, fast, skilful forward/midfielder role.

I wish we did do that. Even if we had to many defenders.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

From what I've seen which is mainly reserved to the WA teams:

Hurn- Not really sold on him yet, great kick but he needs to get more of it. Would be good to see if he moves into the midfield how he goes.

Warnock- Definitely looks the goods and once he puts more weight on hopefully he can dominate the ruck taps more. Doesn't get as much of it as Cox etc but it took others a while to really come on so time is on his side.

Drum- Seems like people are judging him on potential as he hasn't done a hell of a lot yet. One really good game against Adelaide but not a hell of a lot more. Seems to do better at AFL level than in the WAFL so hope he gets backed in more.

Jones- From what I've seen he looks awesome. Areal tough nut who goes in hard and wins the ball. Great to watch

The rest I haven't seen much of so I can't really make comment

What a stupid comment....how can you say someone who is only coming into there third season(and only turned 20 a few weeks ago) isn't going to get much better??

Jones has been a stand out during pre-season and him and McLean have been dominating the time trials.....

his fitness is incredible,(much better than last season) he is very strong, his hardness at the ball is second to none, and has very good skills(wich will naturally get better as he gets older) and will have ALOT more confidence going into 2008 after having an awesome 2007, comeing third in the rising star, and coming second in melbourne's B&F....And Hopefully he runs with the ball more and takes more players on because he has an Awesome side step......

Jones>>>>>>>Daylight >>>>>>>>Birchall

Birchall is weak and gets crappy cheap disposials wich don't have any influence on the game at all!!!

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Birchall has been the better player in the first 2 years they have been on AFL lists. No.

Birchall has more improvement left in him. Yes.

Jones won't get much better than he alreday is. Bullshit

Jones is a good player, but Birchall's skills, height, and pace will make him a formidable player. Jones is better and will be better than Birchall. Mark my words.

My opinion.

My bad, meant to say he won't get better after the 2008 season. Doesn't have the body to improve much from then.

Birchall weak and crappy? Watch the Elimination Final against Adelaide. Was our third best player behing Buddy, and Hodge.

Birchall has had a awesome pre-season and is getting ready to move into the midfield. Has the versatility to play as a defender, and even a third tall.

Birchall is a jet.

Jones is a good player, Birchall will be a GUN.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

If they re-did the draft sure output would have influences in some case but if anything it would still be on potential to improve. Ryder for example who was seen as a risky selection being a bottom aged player and not keen to move away from WA. IMHO which is biased he would go yop 3 if it was redone. Pendlebury, Murphy and Ryder are classes above the rest.
