Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

The way Clark's going he could push into the top 5 or 6. He'd have to stay at this level for another few seasons of course.

Ryder is the better ruckman, but Clark's certainly a better key target.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Well, Ryder's already a better player than Swallow...

Always take a good tall over a good small.
So Ryder is better than Swallow by virtue of being taller? Superb rational.

One is an elite clearance and inside player and the other is a very good ruckman/forward. Bias aside Swallow has clearly outperformed Ryder to date despite being vertically challenged.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Magical time machine time... 2000 ND... stick with Petrie (gun tall)... or swap for Scott Thompson (gun small) ???
This isn't a question of time machining it or not. We have hindsight in both cases. Thompson has shown far more for the duration of his career than Petrie so it's a no contest. Swallow has shown more than Ryder so that too is a no contest.

That wasn't quite my question.
In almost every case the small will have played more, and more consistently (talls take longer & IMHO more can go wrong with injuries).

Would you give up Petrie's career at your club, to get Thompson's?

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

I think Shaun Higgins is one of the most overated players in the history of the AFL. What has he done? Even Shyte Mike had him in his to 50 a couple of times IIRC?

If you want some real lulz check out the Pendlebury vs Murphy vs Higgins threads on the polls board from a couple of years ago.

Ryder has played 122 games, Swallow 111. Injuries have not impacted on Ryders performance or development more than they have Swallow.

Developmentally Swallow had a difficult third year where his form suffered badly and injuries hurt him, however the next year saw a massive improvement in his all round game play and output.

Paddy has pretty much played every game from his second year on.

Would you give up Petrie's career at your club, to get Thompson's?
In a hypothetical world, of course. Thompson has been far and away a more consistent and damaging player over the duration of his career and his presence at out club would have facilitated a more even midfield.

Petrie's best year was last year after a year out and a number of years before that as a big part player for a team lacking options for mobile talls everywhere. Had Petrie being playing as a key forward for the duration of his career with an output similar to 2011 then the decision would not be as straight forward.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Swallow is a competition elite inside midfielder.

Ryder isn't a competition elite anything.

Well we have now found out he is no where near as good as projected by the media.

team has lost players and he has failed to stand up or even play to the level when he had good players around him.

I actually dont know what he has DONE that was outstanding to merit the love.

Honestly, players like zaharakis, hill, grigg have done far more and still get shit hung on them...

he's actually immune to it.

Cue bulldog supporters saying he's injured....

Higgins has elite small man skills, but doesn't seem to work as hard as the other elite midfielders. Whether that is due to injury or effort, I'm not sure.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

1. Pendlebury
2. Murphy
3. Swallow- Surprised at Pies fans rating him ahead of Thomas really is 50/50
4. Thomas- As above could easily be 3rd.
5. Kennedy
6. Nathan Jones- A little controversial but i love his attack on the ball and is continuing to show improvement, easily my favourite down at Melbourne.
7. Ryder
8. Hurn
9. Birchall
10. Vince

So am I to be honest. I like swallow. Have him in my DT and have watched him closely. Good tough inside mid but Daisy is a game breaker. Look what he did in the last quarter against the crows. Look at his 3 grand finals. All Australian last year and runs as hard defensively as any player in the comp. He has a few quietish games at the start of this season and his rating goes backwards. Obviously I am biased but he is my favorite at collingwood because despite all his natural ability he works so hard.

Re: 2005 Afl draft Re-Done

Higgins had a good season.
Once upon a time.

He's not an elite anything.
Nice kick, reasonably sharp, can be dangerous when he gets going, but simply doesn't have the work rate compared to similar types.

1 (1) Marc Murphy (Murphy and Pendlebury clearly on top)
2 (5) Scott Pendlebury
3 (2) Dale Thomas (Has to be next after these two has the ability to single handedly win games)
4 (43) Andrew Swallow (Is a gun midefielder at any other club would be an absolute star with assistance)
5 (9) Mitch Clark (I rate him as one of the best key forwards going atm. Good hands, can kick, and can kick goals on run. Not bad from a 198cm bloke who has kicked goals from poor delivery in a weak melbourne side. Would love to have seen him at a carlton, or collingwood)
6 (4) Josh Kennedy (another of the key forwards, took time, has come good with the better delivery over the past two seasons but i still think mitch clark will go further whereas were probably seeing kennedys best now)
7 (42) Robert Warnock (Fair tap ruckman, probably the only consistantly playing ruckman besides Giles playing atm so has to go high)
8 (14) Grant Birchall (Could probably be higher, premiership player in a great hawthorn team, great run from half back)
9 (15) Travis Varcore (Has had many injuries, but still a premiership player, whos pace amazes at times, has that x factor)
10 (7) Patrick Ryder (Just seeing his best now and its probably not as a ruckman funnily enough but as a forward imo, after being in and out of the side now is a regular and star for the bombers in the last few rounds)
11 (12) Nathan Jones (Hard to tell how he would go in a better performing team, looks a lot like brock mclean, hard style of footy and slow at times, but the only one trying his guts out at melbourne in the midfield atm)
12 (61) Matthew Stokes (Another just like varcoe, premiership player, x factor, and overlooked in the 2004 draft and still went at 61!)
13 (13) Shannon Hurn (Playing his best footy this year at west coast)
14 (11) Shaun Higgins (Always has potential!! Looks like a jet on the odd occasion but lets himself down)
15 (16) Richard Douglas (Best and fairest winner, back from injury now and is one of the crows very good midfielders)
16 (32) Bernie Vince (Alot like higgins, gun at times, then goes quiet. Is a freak when his on!)
17 (70) Jonathon Giles? (Are we seeing the best ruckman of the draft hit his straps with gws now??)
18 (33) Sam Gilbert (Another of the inconstant performers but when his on his on!)

Others: Bower, Dempsey, Ibottson, Alipate Carlile

7 (42) Robert Warnock (Fair tap ruckman, probably the only consistantly playing ruckman besides Giles playing atm so has to go high)
Consistently playing?
Has played 1 this year, didn't play much at Freo, didn't play much in his first year @ Carlton.

10 (7) Patrick Ryder (Just seeing his best now and its probably not as a ruckman funnily enough but as a forward imo, after being in and out of the side now is a regular and star for the bombers in the last few rounds)
Has missed 5 games in the last 6 years, not lining up in the 2nds since 2006.
In and out like a yo-yo.

Pendlebury has to be 1 by himself. Murphy 2, but there is a gap between them.

He is 206 cm and obviously wasnt ready, played 20 games the next year as a genuine ruckman, and has now come off injury. I said that warnock and giles were the only two ruckman consistnatly playing in that draft and thats true. Ryder is now holding the number 1 ruck spot at essendon now with belchambers becoming the number 1 and hille to come back. and im sorry but ryder is no where near as good as mitch clark or josh kennedy as a forward

Admit pendlebury has been good this year, must be winning collingwoods bnf but bith are fairly consistant dont really have a bad game bar the odd quiet one here and there

I would have almost had them going on level before Murphy was tagged out of 3 succesive games before his injury. The tag went to him and his form really dropped off. The contrast while followed by Van Berlo is a good one. Murphy had 5 touches in a half, Pendles had 29 possesions and a crucial goal.
