The guys at afl.com.au have redone the 2008 draft and just from watching it's clear to see two things.

  1. How much conjecture there is around the selections
  2. The sheer weight of quality in that draft that causes such discussion
I disagree with both of them on quite a few of their selections.

My 2 cents

  1. Nic Nat
  2. Hurley
  3. Sloane
  4. Hannebery
  5. Rockliff - Think this was a glaring omission from both of them - 2 x B&F, 1 x AA. He's a gun
  6. Beams
  7. Sidebottom
  8. Shuey
  9. Davis
  10. Walters
Unlucky
Zaka
Picken
S.Hill
T.lynch

Still top quality AFL talent
Hartlett
Jetta
Rich
Watts
Yarran
Ziebell
Ballantyne
Roughead
Motlop
M.Robinson

Gartlett good enough for the AA squad in 2017 yet according to you is not even top quality

Fair call, deserves a spot in the top quality list.
In terms of career consistency though you have him far too high on your list, 13 is a massive stretch.
(Edit: Having actually looked up his career stats, he is actually far more impressive then I first thought) Very decent career he's carved out.

13 to 20 is really subjective imo.

Had Gartlett at 13 just because he is the standout small forward in this draft.

That's really the whole point isn't it. Such a deep draft and most turned out the be really good AFL players makes it very difficult to rank them.
Yep once you get past the top 4-6 it is really super even for the next 20 odd picks.

There were still some pretty decent players who I left out of the top 25 too

I get the fact Watts had a good season last year but lets not get carried away.

Now if he had kicked 259 goals to date like someone else from this draft everyone would take Jack at #1 again, but this guy kicks 259 goals (almost 100 goals more than the next highest) and cant get into the top 20 from the draft, GMAB!
Poor Ballantyne. Assuming you mean him.

The draft has a clear Best Five for small forwards (in the order I would take them):

Breust has 304 goals (av 1.9) to his name (161 games).
Garlett has 294 goals (av 1.7) to his name (167 games).
Ballantyne has 232 (av 1.6) goals to his name (151 games).
Walters has 199 goals (av 1.8) to his name (111 games).
Motlop has 175 (av 1.3) goals to his name (135 games).

I feel like Breust gets forgotten due to the Hawk's time ending; however, the guy equalled a record with Tony Lockett when he kicked a streak of 29 consecutive goals in 2014. The number of goals he's kicked in his career speaks for itself, too. At his best, he used to be a decent pressure forward, too - but that's changed with him being turned into a weird midfielder / forward utility. He's slimmed down too much to use his "don't argues" as effectively in the past. Nonetheless, his past greatness still holds up.

Garlett is a surprisingly good small forward. His stats are great. I haven't paid much attention to him. Ever. But, the guy consistently plays and does something in those games. His stats don't lie.

Ballantyne is in the same boat as Breust (not as good as he used to be), but I still remember him in his All-Australian year as this manic pressure forward who kicked goals. He was great.

Walters is better talent-wise than Ballantyne for me, but he hasn't quite got the runs on the board yet. But, it's pretty obvious by the time everyone's retired, Walters will be remembered as the better player when compared to Ballantyne.

I don't think much of Motlop, and his stats aren't as good as others on this list - except for maybe the number of games he's played being higher than Walters - but it's a good comparison point to see what a solid (albeit bum average compared to the above) small forward looks like.

You would take an over hyped ruckman and a midfielder who has 5-6 under 10 possession games a year at 1-2?

Yet would let a 3 time AA and Rising star winner and a duel AA KPD defender slip to 3 and 7. Good lord!

Sloane would be your best mid-fielder at Melbourne by a street; & there is no better ruck-man in the comp than Nic Nat at his peak, period.

You have a 3 time premiership forward, who has kicked over 50 goals on 3 occasions, going at pick 20. And have all of Garlett, Jetta, Picken & Moltop ahead of him FFS.

There's no way on God's earth that Hurley is going top 5, even coming off his best season....He's a KP Defender, not a gun mid. Those are the guys who win you premierships....I was being generous in putting him in the top 10 for starters.

He's a KPD who averaged more possessions this year than Rory Sloane. :thumbsu:

Also the second part of your stupidity, didn't Brian Lake win you the 2013 premiership as a KPD? Hodge on a HBF in 2008 and 2014. Rioli at half forward in 2015.

Sloane has had 1 under 10 possession game in the last 3 years. 5-6 a year?? Gee you have put some mayo on that comment.

If they had Naitanui’s hair they’d be 1 and 2.

Wow. Why would you bother putting forward such garbage?

Sloane hasn't even had 5 under 10 possession games across a 165 game career.

Good lord, indeed.
still not as good as Hannerberry.

That is a fact!

I’m pretty sure Liam Shiels is a better footballer then Hayden Ballantyne and would be picked ahead of him by most clubs everyday of the week.

Yeah you could make a pretty good case for that.

TBF its a pretty hard draft to rank a lot of players

Should probably do your homework mate.

He's had one sub-10 possession game since round 11, 2010 and four in his entire career, three of which were his first three games.

Ok maybe i was wrong on that. He does however get totally tagged out of games and i stand by my call of having him at no 5 in the draft.
Behind Hannebery and Beams for midfielders in the draft

Maybe? Try definitely wrong!

After the initial tagging issue, much of which was illegal, Sloane got through it & was playing good football later in the year... but I don't suspect you really know too much about Sloane. ;)

Might be because his only under 10 possession game was against us. So i didnt see much of him [emoji6]

Tbf i had him @ no 5 in the draft. Only behind 2 bloody good midfielders so its not like i dont rate him

In what world is Garlett the stand out small forward from this draft?

Says the person that would take Nevillie Jetta over Breust :straining:
