What type of players should we be looking at with our picks?

13: Midfielder
31: KPB
47: KPF
63: HB/Mid
79: Ruck
95: Mid

Or just go with best available?

Really doubt we'll use our last pick, much less our second last pick.

I reckon good mids are easy to find with later picks, rather than good KP's. So I'd rather got for a KP in the first round.

But best available seems good as well.

Daniel Harris & Corey Jones on the market:

St Kilda, which needs to bolster its midfield following the retirement of Robert Harvey, is certain to entertain Harris and could also have interest in Jones, 27, who has played 145 games for 198 goals.

Can tell Greg Denham pulled that from his arse.
Daniel Harris would be a good pick up. At the right price though.
Corey Jones, meh. Could turn out to be another Charlie Gardiner or could actually benefit from a change of scenery. Proven he can kick bags of goals.

Harris is decent but not the sort of mid we need. Corey Jones would be a decent pick up if we could get him cheap, but I don't think we will.

Dont we need more in and under mids?

So far we've got Ball and Hayes, one of which is pernially injured, the other is nearly 30.

Coming up we got Armo, maybe Jonesy...Steven? Goddard even, but could do with another mid aged one.

I'd like Harris, he goes alright.

I don't think so, at least not urgently. Ball, Hayes and Goddard (assuming he'll play there next year like he did the end of this year) is a very good starting combo of inside mids, better than most clubs. Then we have Armo in the wings and Mini, Birss and Baker who can play there whilst tagging plus possibly Jones and Eddy. Compare that to say our stocks of speedy run and carry mids, Montagna... and Gram when he plays there.

18 y.o line breaking mid with pace at what ever pick we'd trade for Harris > 27 y.o Harris himself in my opinion.

Had to read this three times, but agree now that I follow ya.

True, I'd rather Blease than harris at the moment.

Sadly we're unlikely to get either. :(

We have several midfielders in the pipeline.
We are short of forwards now with only two young prospects coming through.
Max Hudgeton will retire after next season and we have been playing several players in the back who would be better suited elsewhere.
We need more backs and forwards.
It is too late to recruit new backmen after Max is retired.

Hayes, Ball, Dal Santo and Goddard are top notch (Hayes is getting on a bit), but you probably want another top player in that bunch.

If I was in your position, Id be trying to see I could get further down the list and see if you can get a guy like Hartlett. If not, maybe you would be a club to take a risk on a guy like Tom Swift, who probably would have gone top 5 but because of injuries might fall down the list.

X. and R Clarke, Montagna, and Schneider are more than handy flankers, but I just don't reckon Eddy, Gram, Jones, Baker, Birss, Gwilt and Armitage are going to carry you over the line - that is where the weakness is.

Eddy and Jones seem to be scrappers who are getting the most out of their talent and bodies, which is admirable and I love watching them but I don't see them getting any better. Armitage on the other hand has the potential to be a top class midfielder. Gram is a star, Baker is among the best taggers in the competition (and every team needs at least one good tagger). Don't rate Birss or Gwilt though. Need to see more of Jack Steven to decide one way or the other. Where is Van Rheenan at? Has Khan Haretaku played at Casey this year or in NSW?

The Age's guide to contradicting yourself :

ST KILDA
WHAT THE CLUB NEEDS: Goal-scoring midfielders and another dedicated forward to ease the heat on Nick Riewoldt. Might look at Daniel Harris or Farren Ray.
Retired/delisted: Robert Harvey (ret), Fraser Gehrig (ret)
Draft picks: 13, 31, 47, 63, 79, 95, 111, 127
Possible trade bait: Justin Koschitzke, Nick Dal Santo, Xavier Clarke, Aaron Fiora
BEST-CASE SCENARIO: The midfield works without Harvey's influence, Luke Ball and Matt McGuire stay injury free and the club's "window" of opportunity stays open.
LIKELY OUTCOME: Gets involved only for draft picks.
RUMOUR FILE: Ex-Eagle Ben Cousins could still land at Moorabbin.

So we need goalkicking mids 'eh? So we should go for Harris (7 goals in 23 games) or Ray (4 in 13) 'eh? But likely we will only "get involved" for draft picks 'eh?

I agree with your comments regarding Eddy and Jones, but Jones has surprised us this year, and maybe he has the attitude to work on his skills weaknesses and improve.
I would be happy if Birss/McQualter were the players we had in the reserves in case of injury. I am not happy when we are playing someone that level every week.
Van Rheenan had been playing seniors at Casey 2007 but had a season stopping injury 2008. Bad timing for the kid in the second year as rookie.
I think Khan had a couple of games with Casey, not sure how he went.

LOL especially since David Armitage had 10 goals from 13! :D

I've said it before and I'll say it again... midfielders with burst ability to break through congested packs at stoppages and through lines...

we've got players that can win the hard ball but often are too slow at times or get caught once they've got the ball..

I've got the confidence in our backline and forwardline if we can stick to the gameplan and improve. the mids are we're its at.. I hope to see X, Army and Jones continue to improve and kick goals... :)

I agree with a lot of that, but have to defend Birssy. Great hands, plenty of courage, I think we should give him more of a go. Doesn't have the pace to make it in the midfield, but I think he'd make a great half forward flanker. Saw him take some great marks in the few games he got to play this year.

Yes Darky, yes.

The draft camp showed the game is only going to get quicker and we must complement the in-and-unders (Hayes, Ball, Birss, Armitage, and Baker, McQualter) we have loaded up on in the past with some pace and skill. We can either find defenders to release Gram, Sam F and BJ into the midfield permanently or get the best available quick mid. I'd rather the former option if possible given (1) the picks we have being fairly late in the pecking order (2) replacements when required for Max and Goose.

We should not have any talls in the rookie draft, and just load up on quicker mids who can prove whether they want it enough like CJ, Gears and Eddy.

I reckon Stephen Hill with pick 13 would do us the world of good. Quick midfielder who can break the lines a lovely left foot and plenty of spark in him. Can take a hanger from any where.

Very interesting :

The Kangaroos have dropped the first bombshell of trade week, announcing that ruckman Hamish McIntosh is available for the right price.

North Melbourne coach Dean Laidley said the club would look at any offers for the 203cm ruckman. He is expected to be worth a first-round pick.

Laidley also said other clubs had shown little interest in Daniel Harris or Corey Jones.
