Now time to re-assess as to who will be delisted.

Still out of contract Saints are X Clarke, L Fisher, M Gardiner, Ferguson, Birss, C Gardiner, McQualter, Gwilt, Allen, Jones, Van Rheenan, Eddy, Geary & Attard.

We currently have two retired players and one player added. With two players returning to the senior list (Maguire & Connors), that leaves us needing to delist at least four senior listed players just to fulfill our requirements draft wise.

If we promote Attard as well as retaining McQualter and Eddy, that means five spots.

And if we want to participate in the pre-season draft, that's an extra spot as well.

I think M Gardiner, L Fisher & M Ferguson are all gone. That gets us to two spots open.

We could move Max Hudghton out of the 38 (currently a veteran inside the 38) to free up another spot at the expense of a rookie spot, considering we get extra rookie spots anyway this season.

If I had to rank them in likelihood of being delisted, it would be: L Fisher, M Gardiner, M Ferguson, C Gardiner, S Birss, J Gwilt, X Clarke. I'm not sure if Attard is staying, but I feel McQualter and Eddy will be retained, and Geary, Jones & Allen will be re-signed.

One of either Rix or M Gardiner. - I don't have all the imformation - depends on Rix's pay and Gardiner's progress.
I assume that Van Rheenan will not be retained but stranger things have happened.
I would prefer McQualter to go before Birss, but I think it will be the other way around.
I cannot think of any reason why Attard would not be retained.
Gwilt may be lucky because he has picked up Charlie Gardiner's position and we don't have too many players for this spot.
Hopefully Cousins would be our only interest in the pre-season and if we have arrange to pick him up ( the club would know before the draft) they may leave McQualter, or Geary, or Attard un-elevated.
My feelings about X is that he would get at least another year before he would be de-listed.

My preference is to take as many real rookies ( not McQualter type recycled ) as we can. We seem to have been just as lucky with our recent rookies as with our main draft, and sometimes real champions come out of it.

I vaguely recall reading that clubs may have more Rookie spots due to the GC infusion. Maybe this is where the extra players spots are coming from. I've been quite impressed with our recent rookie drafting and I am hoping to see players like Attard, Miles, Eddy and McQualter all on the main list.

Add X, Goose and Ray and maybe Howard (who is genuinely QUICK), Steven, and McEvoy all stepping up for matches in 2009 - our playing list will look a lot different next year without much more changes in personnel.

Because of the players we already have coming through, we can afford to draft youngsters with the view to long term development rather than opting for immediate match ready kids - it seems that Lyon is "old school" anyway preferring to promote players after a lengthy hardenning process in the reserves. That approach didn't do Geelong any harm, did it?

My concern is: Who goes (??) to make way for these promotions and draftees, because spaces will need to be made.
