2009 leadership group announced

I’ve got to admit; when I first read it I was pretty annoyed and thought there should be more youngsters in the group. But the new and improved but still non yes man Drummond says if this is what the players want, that’s fine by me. I saw a few of the youngsters joking around with Stevens at training yesterday so he seems like a good choice.

Why wouldn't Stevens play round 1 next year? He has to be one of our most consistent performers over the past 3 years. Not to mention best in the final V Collingwood.

I've got no doubt Stevens & Doughty both deserve it, but I really would've liked to have seen Maric & Bock in there.

Way too top heavy age wise for my liking, which is even stranger considering the apparent leadership strengths of our young players.

Well the players vote on it, so they vote for who they think is best.

Maric needs to cement a spot in the side before he can get in the leadership group.

I wouldnt say he is one of our most consistent performers, but yes he did play very well against Collingwood.

For someone to be voted into the Leadership Group the players obviously rate them highly. Stevens had a great 08 season and I think he was mostly consistent. He's a great part of our team, especially with his ability to present well in attack and defence.

There should be room for him in the team, you would imagine that the payers within the leadership group would be some of the first selected.

Agreed - he wont lose his position in the 22 by anything he does (or doesn't do) - it'll just be a matter of if and when the younger kids finally overhaul his performances.

Anyone upset by the choice of the leadership group for 2009 doesn't understand what the purpose of a leadership group is. I think it's a great list.

Those youngsters that people want in the leadership group will get there... just not in 2009 when they are not ready.

Quite right in all respects.

Players get voted into leadership groups by their peers, who will vote for the ones that have earned their respect by their performances both on and off the field.

That is why there never will be a heap of youngsters in the leadership group, and also why VB is the one youngster that is.

The Crows have said it time and time again, the leadership group is not a place where players learn to become leaders. They do that outside of the leadership group and all have an oppurtunity to do so. The leadership group is where the players who already are leaders are voted in.

Taylor Walker, for example, is showing fantastic leadership at training. If he keeps it up, he'll eventually end up in a leadership group. But he's not a leader yet.

I think if anyone is a good example of how to go about things its this bloke. Career on a knife edge and put in the hard yards and tranformed himself to a very good player. Obviously needed to change the way he played and went about it to suceed and did. Perfect example of do as I do for the youngsters.

Also wasn't afraid to speak to the coaches and ask for a positional change. Wonderful example for the kids!

Congratulations to all the leaders ... & we are lucky as a club we have so many good leadership prospects.

Really hope Goodwin gets to lead without being under duress for most of the year ... though injuring himself on holidays is not a great start.
