Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

I'd agree with you that Pavlich is a player who would certainly help us win more premierships, but it won't happen. He's not leaving the club he captains to be paid peanuts, so among other reasons it won't happen.

The only player we would get in trading with anyone would be one who is willing to take a pay cut to come to us.

Could we offer Pav a back ended deal? Pay him peanuts now but a big boost later given that in 2 years Milburn, Harley, Moons and Scarlo will be off the cap.

Well we could but I still doubt he'd go for that since in the meantime he'd pretty much only be getting match payments from us :D

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Pav has officially come out and said he is unable to play for Geelong due to the number 29 being unavailable.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Burgoyne would cost us our first pick 14 to 17 + maybe a player like

Blake (port have no rucks Brogan is now in his 30s and Lade retired) it would slightly loosen the cap.

Gamble because i dont think hell make it and hopefully we can get something for him before everyone else works out he is very one dimentional.

Motlop because half his family play for port

Byrnes or Stokes because there no good and hopefully Burgoyne would take there place and play more mid to half forward.

Burgoyne would be great but if it was going to happen i would prefer they had a crack at a tall forward option but it wont happen anyway so i have just wasted my time typing this.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

i would love for the cats to go really hard for matthew lloyd. he is the best shot at goal in the league along with fev and j.brown. imagine a forward six of

byrnes,lloyd,rooke
s.johnson,mooney,chapman

we would be near unbeatable all we would have to trade is maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick and a gamble, tenace or lonergan.

thoughts?:thumbsu:

I wouldn't want to trade Motlop the younger, keeping in mind he was what we got for Prismall so let's see if we can get something out of that trade. Keeping him also hlps put pressure on Byrnes Stokes et al.

The trade I suggested on the trade thread was pick 17 + gamble/blake, which I think is fair.

I think it's moot though-he'll go to the Hawks unless the Pelchinator tries to screw people over again

I don't think we need lloyd or will go for a player his age, however if we can do it for tenace, who wouldn't :D

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Anyone remember a statement made that 'if' we go after a player that's been in the system already, we will only look at them in the view they could play 100 games for the club. I don't think Lloyd has 5 seasons left in his body.

With that in mind, as impossible as it is Pav is more realistic than Lloyd or Hall.

If we do chase a big man we would be looking at Bradshaw who would have 4 years left (only 30) or even a chance one of the North Ruckman/Forwards (Petrie/Hale)

In reality we won't make any big trades due to salary cap, if anything there will be more outs than in come trade time..

Pav would get paid the same amount in total as he would if were on the same $ per year deal but the payments are weighted towards the end of the contract. We stay under the cap while our older well paid players are still on the list. Pav gets a shot at a flag. We get a dominant forward while Hawkins and Mitch Brown develop.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

David Hale becomes available I believe, he's not happy at North and they haven't shown him support, so he's a chance.
Extra tall forward, around 200cm, I think.
I'd like to see an extra tall forward at the club that's a genuine senior option.
There are developing young guys, but maybe 2 seasons away.
We could offer him a 2yr deal, with the chance to play in a grand final to resurge his career.
He shouldn't cost as much as others, but can kick his 4-5, especially with our midfield.

David Hale is a poor quality forward. He has lived off that bag he kicked against us ever since then.

He is no better an option than we already have.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

I would prefer now to back Wells and our recruiting team to keep topping up with young talent through the draft rather than punting on players who are in the back ends of their careers. Forget Burgoyne, Hall, Lloyd, N.Brown. They are all either finished and will just be list cloggers; or in Burgoynes case have jubious injury status with no guarantee that he would return to his former elite form. Even Maguire, who is younger, seems to have ongoing injury concerns and I no longer think he is worth considering. On top of this is the salary cap considerations which I assume would have implications in being able to adequately increase the salaries of Selwood/Ablett etc to prevent GC from snaring them.

If we were to trade I would hope that we would only target young (under 24) players (cheaper) that would give us immediate benefit, such as Henderson from the Lions, who could the third tall backman that we will need with Egan and Harleys' retirements.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

In a year where clubs are talking up the prospects of trading early picks, I believe we should attempt to trade for better picks and not players. I would love to see the cats have a crack at pick 10 essendon, pick 9 hawthorn, pick 7 west coast or pick 6 port adelaide.

I would offer up packages including pick 17, ryan gamble, matthew stokes, mark blake, shannon byrnes, shane mumford, david wocjinski.

Mumford? Are u kidding me? Ottens nearly 30, Blake not really coming on - who are u expecting to ruck for the Cats in the future?

Don't know whether we are prepared to give up any players that would entice these clubs to give up an early first round pick. I doubt whether any of the players you mentioned with our first pick would do it. More likely to be able to trade a Gamble or Stokes for a second round pick, perhaps with exchanges of later draft picks somewhere along the line.

We have to be a bit careful we don't trade too many of our younger "depth" players as well. Aside from Hogan, Gamble is probably our only VFL player who can run through the midfield and play forward. Ranga will hopefully come on at some stage but losing Prismall last year has thinned our stocks in this area. We have been fortunate to have had a sustained run of little injury to our core midfield group. That may not continue. Stokes is one that is expendable I reckon. We have Byrnes, Varcoe x2 who player similar roles. What we could get for him I don't know?

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

stokes will not go
he is a genuine small forward who can kick a few
varcoe has never done this

byrnes is too inconsistent

Yeah that's the one that stood out for me as well ! Mumford ? Has had 2 seasons at the club as a Rookie, never played in a real under age comp, never groomed by the system, raw as hell and way overweight - and in two seasons plays over 10 senior games ! That is a pretty good effort by a big man - who they take longer to mature.

For me Mumford has definitely done enough to be promoted off the Rookie list, kept and developed. He looks a real prospect with Ottens aging and Blake seemingly having plateaued. Bad call. Too much upside. Do not trade Mumford. He may yet end up being a very good long term player for Geelong - who has bulk, strength, relative speed, aggression and has demonstrated he has enough raw talent to work with at this point in time. You do not get that combination often. I personally see him overtaking Blake next year. If he gets better at his tap work, and he should, he will overtake Blake.

Lastly Geelong do not need a power forward in trade week. They have Hawkins who is getting better, and will be a good player in a year or two, and Mooney will be around another season, maybe two - that allows Mitch Brown to develop (or maybe Scott Simpson). So with the Premiership window open - Geelong need to trade for a KP backman.

With Taylor being able to take the third tall opposition forward or being able to swing him forward for a change up or injury, Geelong would have a far less predictable forward line, another potential KP marking forward and even better backline when he plays back. He could be the 'swing player' for us. Taylor is a nice mark and kick. Traits that most good tall forward line players would like. If MacGuire goes cheaply - grab him. He surely would not cost us much and with Harley and Egan gone at the end of the season, and Tenace, DJ and Lonergan are traded/delisted, the salary cap should not be that affected with the inclusion of one such player.

Delist Tenace & Lonners, can't see a club out there that would trade for them (unless it is another pick 90 scenario).
Dj should be retained, I think he will be one of players shipped off to GC next year.
I agree we need a KPD defender I am thinking of: Rivers, Henderson or even T Williams but that all depends on what we would have to give for these players. If we can't get any of those & Goose comes cheaply we coul dmaybe look at him but his injuries are a concern for mind.

Who's Henderson or Rivers, if they've got a future why not trade T Varcoe and Byrnes also Gamble, to fit them in.
The backline has to be replenished soon.
Just saw Hendersons profile, pretty good, 196cm, 92kg, went No8 in 07-08 draft, would be a likely type.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

Henderson will be a star. We are dreaming if we think he is gettable IMO.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

From memory Maguire is short for a keyback , something around 189 0r 190. Its not a size to be IF you have lost your spring and speed. Has he , I don't know. To get him , he must be able to move into our best 18 or its just another guy who plays in 2's who just isn't up to it and isn't going to get better. Think Tenace, Spencer etc

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

This.

I'd love to have him but there's no way in hell the Lions would give him up. He was (IIRC) pick 7, and he's already done everything to suggest he'll be a 200 gamer for them at CHF/CHB. Even ignoring the looming retirement of Bradshaw and Brown - what could we possibly offer them that would compel them to give up a young KPP who has gone a long way to proving himself? At absolute best they get another chance to draft one from a worse draft position in a weaker draft.

Re: Potential Trade Week Action!

I have sat here and read this whole thread for no other reason than I am trying not to think about this weeks game. Here are some thoughts:

I think we will try and be more active this trade period than we have recently but rather than recruit stars we need to look at guys that we can get more from than there perceived market value. Pav, Burgoyne are known stars and proven to be worthy of serious coin. It won't happen. I would target players at perenially under achieving clubs or poorer clubs who we may get more out of. This means, Richmond, North and Freo. I am also happy for the club to pick 28 year olds etc.. because the longer we go with our core list the less likely our current stars will play 22 rounds. More senior players in the mix would mean we can rotate players more effectively and keep our cream fresh.

Freo

Peake if he got his head and body right may offer more than Stokes/Byrnes. But there would be no helicopter involved this time around.

Headland - could be cheap and we know he can be a super player in a good side.

North - Hale maybe an excellent fit for the Cats and I think he has under achieved at North.

Richmond - 3 months ago I would have said Tambling but he has unfortunately turned the corner. Other than that they all seem fairly crap. The club should still take a look.

The above is just a sample but I think the club could identify more players that are under achieving that are in a similar position to these guys. Think a Farren Ray more than a Shaun Burgoyne.

Lovett and Gumbleton may be worth a look. Maybe Essendon will feel guilty for screwing us last year. Thorpe at Hawthorn is another option who hasn't come on.

Lloyd, Hall and N Brown could all offer something for a year but this doesn't seem to fit the clubs approach. But do we really want the doggies to get Hall too cheaply? For peanuts they are all worth a spot for a year.

The guy I would throw the kitchen sink at in terms of draft picks and fringe player trades would be Boak at Port. Now this is very unlikely because of the Burgoyne situation. There would have to be a Byron Pickett type scenario where the players says I am leaving at the end of my contract anyway so you may as well trade me now. The discontent at Port may spill over more than just Burgoyne. I would give up our top 2 picks and a Stokes to get him because I think he will not just be a super player but he will complement our midfield beautifully. He can get his own ball but he his more of a runner than our curent elite midfielders. Burgoyne would fit this bill as well but I just think he will demand too much coin.

The reality is: if we come out of the trade and draft with 1 very good footballe this year then we will have done well.

TMA , are we still so sure of this? Him being dropped ..sorry sore groin for the Prelim could indicate that he is on shaky ground
