Just thinking about another forward who could have a big fall in the draft. Shane Kersten has had elbow surgery and will miss most of the year. He was very impressive last year and is a leading forward very much in line with Darling from this year. I would love for him to fall to us with our compo pick but I don't know how realistic that is.

Hey Quigley what are your thoughts on Dobosz? Kicked two bags of six leading up to the Vic Country game and had a day out against them. He's a good size and has plenty of development left in him and he's Tasmanian!

Also another player who Is good and had quite a good game last week was Sam Frost, an athletic rebounding CHB.

Also Shane Nelson with our second round pick would be good, he is what we need in a mid, aggressive inside player with good footskills.

Nelson might be gone by then. Insiders claim he's Martin mk2.

Assuming the ladder doesn't change and we come 3rd last we get pick 8. All the "elite" midfielders will be gone, who do you think we should pick up? Devon Smith who will probably still be available at that pick, he seems like the type of player we need. Rate him?

Top 10 is often shaped by who holds what picks. If we are after a KPP with our first pick, we will be fine at pick 8 as long as the other teams before us aren't also after KPP stocks. The draft order and potential top 10 won't be clear until near the end of the year.

Personally, i think we can easily use our 2nd round pick for a mid, Hadley has a good record in finding some value with these kinds of picks. You can't expect to find dimonds at pick 60, but i think the top 30 kids each year are usually pretty good. We should have 3 picks in the top 30, but it will be interesting to see by the end of the year who we are looking at when.

I think this is going to be a very important draft for us. Hadley has done some good work in previous drafts but this one he needs to shine. I'll back him in but the sooner the coaching review is conducted and resolved the better so a definite direction is put in place.

Cheers to those providing a bit of a opinion of the kids out there.

Wasn't Riska a 60ish pick....:p

Went to the 2011 U18 Champs Rnd 2 double header played at Paper Park – the first match was NT vs Vic Country… oh and had been advised Jordan Bannister and Leigh Fisher were officiating the this game – seemed to bounce the ball better than the previous ex-player in Mark Fraser – good luck guys!

Was uncertain as to what Richard Newell’s role was – initially matched up in the middle on Greene/Kennedy then was ‘rested’ at half back with runs on Tyson and Plowman – must have a fair motor as I struggle to recall him being rotated through the bench. Doesn’t seem to have explosive speed… just kept moving about the field trying to create a loose target when not ‘running with’.

Thankfully? Only caught the first two quarters of the second game…

Now that the first few rounds of the champs are over and the first half of the AFL season is over I would like to say that the Lions need midfielders and there are some beauties in this Draft class. I have seen some video's and although that isn't exactly a great judgment of there actual games I have to say that these blokes have made me very excited(in order of who I want most)

1. Dayle Garlett Western Australia ( He is Number 1 on my list simpy because of his potential, he looked very good when I watched him and his pace and skills is something that would benefit our team a lot! Got 28 possesions Yesterday aginst Tassie. One question I do have to ask however is he elegible to be drafted this year?)

2. Stephen Coniglio Western Australia (the best midfielder in this draft class and the only reason why Garlett is in front is because I believe he can be something special. He has got it all fairly good pace, good skills on both sides of his body and he kick's goal's. 23 possie's and 4 goals against Tassie Yesterday.)

3. Chad Wingard South Australia (the best SA midfielder this year IMO, and top 3 in the whole draft class! Has good skills on both sides of his body. kick's goal's, racks up the possie's and he can take a solid mark, very similar player to Coniglio. 24 possie's against NSW and 20 possie's, 2 goals against Queensland)

4. Jaeger O'Meara Western Australia ( Freak, he is an underager but he is in that group of blokes that GWS can trade out to clubs for bigger bodies. I would love the Lions to try and get him! Pacey with good skills and he gets the ball, 26 possies aginst Tasmania Yesterday)

5. Devon Smith Victoria Country ( Now I will admit I haven't seen this guy play but I have put him in simply because he got 27 touches and 6 goals against NT. Preety good for a bloke that is 175cm tall and 73 Kilo's!)

Others that I have left out are Lachie Whitfield Victoria Country ( underager who I haven't seen play but apprently is a freak) and Shane Nelson Western Australia( 21 possies for WA against Tassie, the WA midfield is amazing!)

I am sure that there are many other great player from team's like Vic Metro and Vic Countey and more from SA and of course the Div 2 sides will have some good talent, it is also very early on and player's will rise up the draft boards and some of these player's from my list will slip but that is my early list guys:)

Oh and when analyzing and criticizing this remember that I only saw video's of these guys highlight's in this year's Under 18 Champs and got these stats off the AFL website, I am by no means a draft expert:D

P.S. can somebody please tell me if Dayle Garlett is eligible this year? I love that kid he is a freak of nature!!!!!!!!

Cheers LS!

Here you go guys. Round 2 review of the champs. Enjoy.

A bit of deja vu in round two. Similar events happening to the same teams.

SA v NSW/ACT

NSW lost by a similar margin they did last week mainly because of the same reason – A slow start. You just can’t do that against the highly rated SA side and they took full advantage of with setting up a big lead in the first 40 minutes and from there SA just continued to build of their lead goal by goal. On the bright side for NSW fans they were much more competitive this round, tried hard all day and never gave up. The three SA changes all had great impact and made their team structure better when moving forward.

Players who stood out:

SA.

Chad Wingard – Another BOG coming his way, 18 disposals and five clearances in the first half and really set his team up for a big win against NSW. Got shifted forward where he did manage to have a few shots on goal without much luck. Finished the game off with 24 disposals and showing the recruiters he’s more than just an “outside” player.

Ben Kennedy – Kennedy showed today why many clubs are lining up to have him play for their club. I thought he was super impressive and was probably 2nd best on the ground. Ben didn’t play last week but you’d think after this performance he’ll be in their team for the rest of the champs. The underage forward is really smart, fast and knows where the goals are. Played with the NSW defence at times and finished with a solid 20 disposals and had 7 shots at goal (4.3).

Sam Mayes – Another SA forward who really impressed me. Medium type leading forward who is quick and a great mark for his height, it’s pretty hard to match up on those types and it showed today with NSW unable to get anyone to stop him with Mayes having 7 shots at goal (4.3) including the first two to start the SA rampage. He has dominated QLD and NSW, so he just needs to have another one of those games against a div one team to that he can cut it with the highly rated defenders and not a just another one of those players who just dominated the lower teams. He’s an underage player so keep an eye out for him next year also to see how he develops.

Alex Forster – I can name three other players who i would put in there but decided Alex was the right option. He just had one of those games today where everything hit the target by foot. Provided good run out of the backline, attacked the ball well when he had a chance to and managed to kick a good goal, he finished with 22 quality disposals.

NSW/ACT.

Adam Flagg - Good young prospect here. Played a good game last week in the losing side and another solid one this week. Wins his own ball, moves well around the ground and always kicks goals even though he gets limited supply.

David Coward – Only managed 17 disposals but i enjoyed it when he had the ball in his hands. He seems to always have that extra second and uses his speed well to escape from his opponent. One to look out for.

Jarrod Witts – Second week in a row he has managed to be in NSW’s top three players for the game. He’s just a really good player, great tap work and works well around the ground and presents an option up forward. Finished with 18 disposals, 6 marks and 17 hitouts.

Vic Country v NT

Match of the round! Even though NT lost their second game in a row they were super competitive just like last week and didn't give country any easy possessions, made them fight for every possession and it took some individual brilliance from a few future stars to give country some sort of protected lead. Just like last week the start killed NT and didn’t show how well they played and were forced to catch up for the whole game but never gave up. They kept playing their roles and eventually caught a few of countries players off guard after a very controlled first half in defence. NT were a chance at three quarter time but guess who... Smith broke the game open, kicked goals and step them up. Vic country had some very likely types up forward even when they cut Elliot and Gordon from their team due to rotation policies. Pretty much shows the depth of this year’s side.

Players that stood out:

Vic C.

Devon Smith – BOG!!! GUN!!!! THE COMPLETE GAME!!!! Included in the team this week and was in everything. Played the perfect midfield/forward type game and none of the NT players had anyone to match up on him and ended up beating anyone who went on him. Few of his goals and possessions were first rate. Ended up with 27 disposals and 6 very, very, very important goals. His stocks will rise after this game.

Todd Elton – Was disappointing last week but really worked hard today to get himself in the right positions and present at all costs. Played the true CHF leading up role, linked up well whenever country went forward, and used his skills to advantage. Collected 23 disposals, took some nice marks and kicked an important goal to stop the NT comeback.

Alex Benbow – The ranga was good today. Fast, clam and composed. Linked up well when they pushed through the midfield and own his own ball in the middle. Another player to look out for in the future.

NT.

Jed Anderson – I try to name new players every week but i just had to name Jed again. Probably one of the reasons why NT are suddenly a tough team to beat. Played a great game (22 disposals, 2 goals) and tried his best to give NT every chance to win, hard to believe he’s an underage player. Can’t wait to see him in action next year!

Lindsay Lawler – If NT had more players like him who know what they could do. Attacking goal kicking midfielder who can use the footy extremely well at times. Finished with 20 disposals and 2 goals.

Gibson Turner – With Tipungwuti been shut down by a tight Vic Country defence they needed another forward to kick the goals and turner definitely stood up with three goals.

Vic Metro v QLD

Vic Metro were super impressive last week with the team they picked but they made too many unwanted changes for this match and it did mess up their structure a little and after been embarrassed last week QLD were playing for pride. Both teams started poorly but some new faces showed the recruiter’s glimpses of what they can do and after quarter time Metro had a small lead over QLD. QLD didn’t just give up and work harder around the ground and got back into the game with sheer desperation, they would have had the lead by their skills still let them down at times and Metro were lucky to take a 12 point lead into the half. After the half the floodgates open the Metro’s class was on show for everyone to see. The “new look” Vic midfield started winning the clearances, contestant ball and dictated possession while the whole defence started picking up the ball cleanly, used the spare man very well and rebounded without much pressure which gave the forward plenty of chances to kick a good score, all those factors lead to a five goal to nothing 3rd term really set it up for them. Vic Metro continue playing on their terms in the 4th and all the new inclusions started to get more confidence and played on more and broke through the lines, another dominant display from the powerhouse club saw them six goals to nothing in the 4th. Amazing turn around since half time, that’s what you call domination!

Players that stood out:

Vic Metro.

Jonathan Patton – Absolutely dominated any opponent that came within 10 meters of him. Kept his side ahead at the half with three important goals but in the 2nd he just took up a gear and started marking everything and kicked another three goals. No wonder GWS want him so much. Finished with 19 touches, 11 marks (most of them contestant) and six goals.

Tom Curran – Stats aren’t that big but i really loved how they worked with Patton. It just seemed like they knew what each other was going, moved into space well and knew when to present and when to give Patton space. Really smart play by the forward, he ended up with 15 touches, 8 marks and kicked 2 goals. Together they kicked 8.7

Billy Longer – The athletic ruckman had a nice solid game, he performed well in the ruck (13 hitouts) and gave his midfielders every chance to win the clearances while at the same time worked well across the ground (13 touches) and marked well when he had the chance (7 marks). Also pushed forward and kicked a team lifting goal.

WA v TAS

They say a week is a long time in footy and here’s another example why that’s the case. Last week a wasteful WA side struggled to beat a determined NT that had their chances to course a massive upset while even though Tassie lost their game against Vic Country plenty of their players showed great touch and provided a great contest.
Really not much to talk about this game. At the start of the first bounce you expect this game to be really competitive but the WA midfield just dominated from the word go, they were just too fast, smart and skilful for the Tassie side. All their KPIs were much higher than when they played NT which was when they got a wakeup call that you can’t underestimate any side. They kicked the first nine goals of the match and from there the game was already done. Tassie just couldn’t play their style of footy and didn’t have the speed to match up on the younger WA midfield.

Players that stood out:

WA.

Stephen Coniglio – BOG again. Attacked the ball extremely well, won his own ball, linked up well and kicked 4 goals, gathered 23 touches and 3 marks.

Christopher Yarran – Another player to keep an eye out for the 2012 draft. Very fast and creative forward who just knows where the goals are. He can crumb well while at the same time he can mark well for his size – Kicked 5 goals, took 10 marks and ended up with 14 possessions.

Jaeger O'meara – Another top performance by the underage midfielder. Got plenty of the ball and used it very well, won his own ball etc etc.

Dayle Garlet – The super fast underage left footer was just too good for Tassie. 28 disposals and all of them were damaging and hit the targets lace out.

Shane Nelson – He was unlucky not to be included in the best last week after his display but i just had to add him in this week after another solid hitout. Good inside work and on top of that he linked up well in the play and was too strong for his opponent.

TAS.

Jesse Lonergan – Tassie’s best midfielder on the day. Stood up when the whole midfield wasn’t performing and ended up with a respectable 19 disposals and 6 clearances for his solid inside work.

Geez, she's pretty negative about the quality of this draft.

Not sure we should have cashed in that first compo pick this year in light of that. Especially as we could end up with a priority pick at the end of the first round anyway.
