Early days still but I thought we could get a draft thread going to discuss who we like for our picks.

I was reading this article on AFL.com and a few bios interested me. I'll throw up 2 names that I would guess should be available to us at some point, but I honestly don't know if these guys will be long gone before our first pick or if they're in line for rookie list selection.

1. Steven Verrier - Incidentally RE took him for us in the trial run of the annual phantom draft. Tall and quick, apparently has good decision making and good skills. Plays for South Freo.

There seems to be nothing not to like.

2. Jackson Merrett - Tall, outside type who breaks lines. Knightmare, who drafted him in the phantom draft, seems to think he's a motivated kid. Is compared to Jaspar Pittard, who I like the look of for Port. From Geelong.

Not sure who we should draft.

Like to think we'll use our first pick as trade bait to add a ready made player to our list. That will helps us make the next step. E.G Chick and Stenglein.

Second Round: Outside player, that breaks the lines.

Third Round: A quick nippy small forward.

with our first pick i would like a KPD to help cover Glass's eventual retirement
sam frost, jackson paine or fraser Mcinnes. Not sure if any of them will be available tho.
second pick- would like to pick waylen manson but think we should go midfield

I'm massively keen for a KPD. Don't mind what round or even if it's through trade.

Glass is old.
Brown is injured a lot and no guarantee of being great.
Emac is injured a lot.
Schofield is a third tall.

I think our Backline is looking good as is our forward line mate, the real problem seems when Kerr is out and Shuey gets a tag. Go hard for a quick Midfielder I say.

Yeah I'm keen on another back, i'm confident we can get one with a later pick or in the PSD.

I'd offer up Brown as a trade, possibly Masten, Callum Wilson are options too.

Not this year Spek, won a number of games without Kerr. :):thumbsu:

In fact, just checked, the only loss, without Kerr in the team, was to St Kilda.

Maybe try and get a quality defender from the WAFL, VFL ect. What did Fremantle pay for Silvagni ? Faulks looks good to.

Was really keen on getting Rich but obviously not going to happen now. After being very spectacle about Bennell coming over here I have warmed to the idea. Watched his game yesterday and was very impressed. Only concern is if he decides to live the lifestyle of his mates.

Pearce could be a good pick up but would just love some pace in the team tbh. Either that or a crumming small forward.

Would bet, at this point, on taking Fraser McInnes (CHB for Perth playing league, is 18) or if Fremantle take him, then Jordan Lockyer (FB, son of Andrew).

However if a good mid slides I want us to pull the trigger. For example a Ben Mackenzie or a Hayden Crozier. Crozier could go as high as 9 but is inconsistent so has every chance of sliding.

I think this is the year to use our picks as trade bait.
We have a good shot at the flag while our veterans are still around and apparently this is a weak draft.
I also reckon we should pick up Luke Blackwell with one of our picks. Continues to dominate WAFL and I'm certain he'll be at worst a serviceable player, and very possibly the next Priddis.

I've had a few discussions with friends about Blackwell. I maintain he's too small to play onball at AFL level.

I'll always back the knowledge of our recruitment staff but I'm be very puzzled if we take Blackwell in the national draft.

I just think he's proven himself well enough. He obviously has a great football brain and with us having one more big shot while the veterans are still around it's the perfect time to pick up someone who can straight in and have an impact. And he's the same height as Masten and Kerr, currently both starting 22's, plus I don't height makes much of a different for an inside midfielder.

As much as I would love a gun mid, we'll be very lucky for one to last to pick 22 this year, a very weak draft. Shane Nelson is one that could be taken at aroudn our pick.

However, if we don't trade trade the pick (which I would advocate if it got us a good player), McInnes should be our #1 target.

How big you are in stature has a lot to do with how strong you are though and being 177cm isn't great.

Despite Masten's good game on the weekend, his lack of strength lets him down IMO.

Also, if you have a look at Kerr, he's listed as around 80kg. Masten is usually listed as a touch under 80.

Blackwell? Around 70kg.

Just saying...

Brennan and Blayne Wilson don't look tall enough to hold down key position posts (188 and 186 cm respectively). Jordan Lockyer sounds good, but at 190cm he could be just another addition to our expanding list of defenders not quite big enough for a key defensive post. We'll need another key defender.

We should also look for a quality mid and a forward pocket.

Anyone read up about Michael Talia?Would seem an option for a KPD if available.
Personally I hope we go for another midfielder with first pick and KPD with 2nd and try for a nippy fwd with 3RD.
early days though!

I think our two main holes are classy mid and KPD.

On the surface it looks like our KPD stocks are solid but with Glass possibly retiring soon, we all saw how thin we are down back with 1-2 injuries earlier in the year.

Brown and McKenzie just seem to be injured so often that it is an important area to look at.

None of Masten, Stevens or Swift have truly taken that next step so gun/classy mid seems a priority. Shuey, Scooter and Gaff look great but we need more if we want to challenge for a flag.

Manson could firm as an option if he tests well and has a good finals series for Claremont. I think McInness will be in purple in 2011 and Talia will be long gone.
Nelson I don't mind but he's very similar to Gaff just less polished and intelligent with ball in hand.

I don't understand why everyone is so defensive. Our need for forward potency is greater than our need for defenders and inside midfielders.

We do need a small forward but that is it.

Have an abundance of forward options.

Abundance? Other than Lecras Kennedy Darling which other players have proven their worth as guns?

Our defence is our best line, our young forward line and midfield still has room for more class.

Speaking of KPD, Swannies how has Notte looked this season? Chance at all for rookieing (is that even a word??)? I think spending a pick or two on KPD's isn;t a bad idea, but as the saying goes, you can always convert a KPF to a KPD.

You cwazy.

Glass - old but could go another two seasons IMO.
McKenzie - promising signs at 23.
Brown - needs games but is good enough.
Schofield - third tall as far strength goes, superb spoiler. Only 22.
Brennan - can play tall or small (unproven and developing)
Smith - Can play tall or small. Good enough to spoil 192cm forwards.
JoJo - looks more like a midfielder these days and could be trade bait.

Lynch - old and he isn't a gun.
Kennedy - entering his prime.
Darling - potentially a KPF but that ship is yet to sail.
Lycett - he's a ruck/ forward and shouldnt be veiwed as a full time KPF. 18-24 months away from consistent game time.
