I think Murdoch getting to 44 might have been a big surprise.......as HBF will attest, I almost spat my beer out when we passed :o, but in hindisght I can see how structurally Rowe is equally as important straight away.

I have no inside knowledge, but my viewing of this years draft pool I wouldn't be surpris if we may have only had a list of 15 or 20 we liked before Rowe was the best option structurally......the chances of one of them getting to 44 is a big call to make an extra delisting pre-draft.

Any reason why we did not look to taking Rowe as a rookie, as much he fufills our needs he has been in the system for some time, and as much we hope he may be as successful as Duigan, this may not necessarily be the case, as Duigan clearly had other things in his life he was focussing on in that 18-24 age range, and taking Murdoch with pick 44 and then Rowe with one of our rookie selections would have seemed a smarter decision, as if Rowe turns out a player he could have been upgraded.

A few reasons I can think of...you can only have 2 nom rookies?? Tuohy and Curnow and Rowe would make an interesting headache.

GWS had pick 56 and we may have had mail they preferred him over Downie and/or Setanta....

If we were concerned enough about his situation to let him finish his apprenticeship, a rookie spot for a 24 yo may not have been attractive or worht promising.

There are so many hypothetical statements that even with hindsight it is a little hard to predict.

1. There had to be a slide who drifted to pick 44 that we rated.
2. Rowe would have lasted to our following pick.
3. The delisted player did not affect our salary cap.

Give all those issues, I think at the time of delisting, it was an appropriate decision to go into the draft selecting 3 players.

Yes, I see your point and they are all certainly issues that we would have had to contend with.

Oh well, at least we didn't make a Yarran over Rich or Lucas over Talia type blunder this year...:p (yes I am taking the piss).

If Rowe can do a job similar to that of Duigan then we come out winners.

Bootsma is a project that we can take on with ease, considering our depth.

Interesting that we have the ability to ask WA clubs to play players in different positions, and that we had Bootsma play on a wing for a few weeks to assess his midfield potential.

Is this a normal thing or is this the Hughes/Rogers WA networking credentials in play?

Pelchen was asked that on SEN this morning....he said some recruiters will do it if they have a good relationship with coaches.

I have a nice little story about a TAC game, that probably isn't my place to tell.

No idea about the quality of the untried players the Giants had recruited before the draft, yet this prospective team looks pretty average...

B: Golds Tomlinson Wilson
HB: Buntine Davis Adams
C: Palmer Greene Hoskin-Elliott
HF: Scully Patton Shiel
F: Smith Cameron Haynes
R: Downie Ward Coniglio

I/C: Treloar Tyson Hampton Hombsch

Needs more Chadwick. :thumbsu:

Anyhoo, in the washup of the Draft thingy, we got Buckley (who we tucked away), and Bootsma (from the clouds), but both have been mentioned as first rounders.

And a ready made beast.

Reckon we did pretty damn well.

Tell, tell, tell!

Instead of full names I will accept abbreviations such as L.Simpson or Lisa.S. :thumbsu:

Yep, sounds like we were (are) pretty keen on him

Only time will tell but to put things in perspective we have come out of the compromised drafts with:

Watson, McCarthy, Mitchell, McInnes, Duigan, Curnow, Bootsma, Rowe and Laidler

On paper, not bad.

This was probably the weakest draft ever because of the GWS situation, so our inactivity makes sense, especially after we cleaned up big time in the last draft. The 2010 draft was pretty amazing. We got 3 quality talls - Watson, Mitchell and McCarthy, plus McInnes and Duigan in the one draft despite having a very weak draft position. There was no chance of getting that sort of quality in this years draft. So it's been planned perfectly. Looking forward to the rookie selection. Lets hope we can strike gold again.

:)

+ Buckley

Initially i was puzzled at us taking another half back flanker but after listening to Hughes suggest Bootsma may well play midfield its a bit more tasty .

Taking Rowe tells us Mitchell wont be ready next year and thats fine , the big guys do need time . It also tells us Henderson stays back which im very happy with , i can see Jamison and Henderson as the spine in a very strong backline for quite a few years to come .

Finally Buckley ......... He's Jim's son ........ thats good enough for me !!!!!

If you want to see something embarrassing, go watch the recent video of that Amateurlaide list manager attacking GWS's young list. Just pathetic. I felt sorry for the new draftee's sitting next to him.

:)

Done and drafted Emma Quayle
Now the dust has settled, it's possible to assess which other clubs, besides GWS, picked winners.

FREMANTLE: Like Brisbane, Fremantle needed to look at some talls and was in a position to, but clearly didn't rank any of them highly enough, with the overlooked Kersten not their man. Expect them to look at that next year.

WHO WANTS A TALL?

The surprising thing about this draft was that a few clubs that seemed to really need to bring one or more genuine key position prospects in - Adelaide, Brisbane, St Kilda, Fremantle - either made it a late priority or didn't draft any at all. The things the recruiters have been saying for most of the year - that many of the available talls were high potential but high risk, with one or more significant flaws came to bear.

It's become apparent that even if a club desperately needs young KPP, it's only OK to pass and pick quality mids if they're not Carlton.

Other clubs get a pat on the back for a job well done.
