I liked your picks Monocle especially the Murdoch pick. I have him in the late 30s at the moment and where you got him makes him a real bargain.

On Lee he measured in short at State Camp at 191.5 which would have disappointed a few. His testing though was very good with his jumps being exceptional and his 20m time being very good at 2.92. Very nice for a KP.

He is so athletic I dont think the 1-2cm will really hurt him. Am exepcting him to go. That 20m is exceptional.

He's also long with a good leap. KPD's are usually shorter than KPF's as well. He'll be right with height I believe,

Pick #79 Port Adelaide Lee Spurr Central District 185cm 82kg

Great get here I feel, this bloke is one of the best mature age players outside the AFL. Almost single-handedly won the SANFL Grand Final in 2011 with a massive last quarter. Plays predominantly across half-back in that classic quaterback role but often runs up the ground a lot to slip forward from time to time. Hard running, HUGE LEAP, and long accurate kick. Can really take a big mark, took pretty much the two best marks in the SANFL this year. Reliable player who will rack the pill up, constantly pump it out of defence, link very very well, he loves to be a link in the chain out of defence and often ends up on the end of the work he started in the forward line.

All in all, low risk high reward with pick 79, stick him on the HBF for Port and he would play round 1 and not look out of place at all.

Port Adelaide Review

Pick #6 Elliott Kavanagh

Pick #45 Marley Williams

Pick #51 Clay Smith

Pick #79 Lee Spurr

I came into the draft knowing Port were desperate for some quality mids to be injected into their side. Without solid midfield plus backup depth for rotations, a side will struggle to mix it with the best. All the top sides over the years, especially of late have had elite midfields. Geelong, Collingwood, West Coast in their prime had top shelf midfielders. Port atm would be in the bottom 3 for midfield quality and something had to be done, hence my midfield bias in this draft.

Kavanagh at 6....a risk given his injury history but not a reach. He's worthy of top 5 and with Tyson gone I had to take him. He is genuine quality and will become a very good high echelon midfielder in years to come. Many make a fuss over his injury history which he does have but it is nowhere near as bad as Hamish Hartlett. I think a few pre-seasons and careful conditioning and he will be right. He just adds pure class to the side.

Williams at 45 was a huge get in my eyes, he's top 25 material. A blend of power and x-factor and a bit of agro to boot, not afraid to tackle, and not afraid to give it to the opposition. A genuine footballer, could be a matchwinner, long kick, dangerous kick and always finds the ball in dangerous spots. Can go missing but will be hard to stop once he is AFL fit. Ready round 1 and will add bite to the Port half-forward/midfield line and compliment Gray.

Clay Smith at 51, well that was a surprise. Too good for this and surprised many have him ranked so low. I have him around 30-34 atm but have not finalised my rankings, he will probably enter my top 25-30. Does so much WORK in the packs, small but agile, nippy and nimble, quick hands solid engine and will find heaps of the pill. Has a superb attitude and although is not blessed with the longest or tidiest kick in the book, many many good inside players over the years are in this category. Has a Selwood like presence around the packs, no care for his body and will win games for sides from his work. Had to be taken and will further add power to the Port midfield after my first 2 picks. All of a sudden there is some good young quality coming in.

Spurr at 79 is no risk, he is ready and was ready years ago. No fuss, genuine AFL material, probably a quarterback type such as Gram and Hodge as he plays very similar to those, especially Gram. Long kicking, and very strong-high marking he will slot in ready to go and add strength and depth to a soft half-back line.

Pretty happy with my efforts, but the work is not done...will only really see in years to come how these players go.

Pick # 83 Sydney - Lachlan Dalgliesh 184cm 74kg 1993

I found this a tough choice between Nic OBrien or Lachlan Dalgliesh, Nic is the better player, but as i selected a similar type to OBrien with Kelly with my last pick i decided to go with the speculative selection of Dalgliesh.

Dalgliesh is a Jet!!! Super quick athlete who tested in the top 1% at the combine in 20m and agility tests. He also tested in the top 20% for the repeat sprints.

Also being a left footer always finds room in tight spaces. Would not expect him to play in 2012, but has the raw ingrediance to become a very useful player for the swans.

Was a member of the VC squad but did not gain selection for any of the matches.

Fantastic effort fellas I think this is going to be a bl#*&y hard draft to predict cause whatever GWS do in their picks in the first ten will throw everything one way or another

again .....well done

I have been reading and listening to the daily prospect written up in the HS.

Yesterday it was Crisp who does not have a high profile but after reading that he was spoken to by nine clubs at the Combine and is considered elite with an average of fifteen pressure acts in the Championships.
I am fairly confident he will be drafted in some way.Seems a very level headed kid.

Very good player and a great bloke as well. He should have already been on a list 4-6 years ago from his Morningside days. He will be a steal for PA if they get him at 79, or anyone else who gets him. If he can get on a list and get his body right, there is no reason he can't play 15+games for most clubs. (Prob excluding Coll, Geel and Hawks)

It's getting towards that time of the year again and I'm just browsing through last years crop to see how my picks went and fair to say I am pretty pleased with their progress so far. Especially Clay Smith for where I got him. But to a lesser extent Williams, who has cracked a tough pies side at times and Spurr now cementing his place for Freo. Kavanagh although has played the least, has performed well when given a chance. Bit more pre-season and he'll be right.

Selections by Club

Carlton
Julian Dobosz
Nick Haynes
Dylan Buckley
I didn't have a good year last year. At least I did predict that we'd get a forward. I certainly didn't predict he'd get cancer and not play a senior game. o_O

I wonder what Dubosz is doing this year? I haven't heard even a rumour about him.

I think Dobosz is playing for North Hobart.

Devon Smith and Brandon Ellis both had very solid first years. I believe the trick when drafting is don't reach. Know your needs but try and always pick the best footballer. In retrospect frost, dobosz and Nelson seemed overrated. However I like Shane Nelson and think he was stiff.

All it takes is one phantom drafter to "overrate" a player and they go higher than expected.

Then again sometimes I think recruiters get hindered by more information and drop a player like Darling based on information us mug punters don't know about.

You are right but I think if clubs draft good footballers who can compete athletically that is priority one in conjunction with individual character which clubs put a lot of research into.
