Relatively happy with the outcome. Not necessarily because of the quality of the players, (we will not know for another year or two or three) but because of the very balanced nature of our players, (a bit of everything).

We covered our backline with a mature experienced player who will also be of enormous benefit in the development of our youngsters in the reserves, we covered our Rucking needs with a developing Ruckman, and another tall midfielder come, defender come, forward come, utility that was essentially too good not to take even though we have plenty like him.

All in all it appears Hadley has done another great job this year in building our team for the future.

Now let's just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Oh yeah not forgetting we filled our Clark/e vacancy as well.

Also it now appears that the KP forward that was in consideration for the Docherty pick was indeed Jay Leever.

He went at 60 - seems a bit of a difference between 12 and 60 or am i missing something? :D

Plus we added to the ranga quota.

If Banana Boat doesn't sign on as a major sponsor soon the Club's doing something wrong...

Good to see we now have almost a full complement of rookies on our list.

We have eight. Our usual allocation is nine.

We have taken a couple of QLDers. This certainly indicates that we are willing to give opportunities to some local talent. The fact that Wrigley is mature aged also sends a good signal to the rest of the QLD competition.

This rookie draft we also scoured the nation for the best available talent. We went to Booleroo, country SA and Myrtleford, country Victoria. All this sends a good message to the supporters. No stone will be left unturned to get the best available talent to the club.

Odd that we did not pick Wrigley as a QLD zone selection thus giving us more options with this pick.

“Steve Wrigley has had two very good years in the QAFL/NEAFL, winning Labrador’s Best & Fairest this year after finishing Runner-Up in 2010. He has good skills and is a clean user of the ball. He is a relatively late-bloomer, who has only recently decided to really focus on becoming an AFL footballer. Since moving to Queensland a couple of years ago, he has really elevated his standing.

I think there's a minimum amount of time a player has to be playing in Queensland for before they qualify for our zone selections (three years seems to come to mind). If he's only been up here for two, then he may not have been eligible for a zone selection.

I previously thought that the club would stick to a playing squad of 46 players. But perhaps their quota was actually 48, if you include Barry and Newell. So maybe our list management has remained the same, it's just that the we have allocated 2 extra list spots for the scholarship players.

Looks wise, Wrigley reminds me a little of a young Bluey McKenna.

yeah not bad POBT and Fatcat08's suggestion of a young D.Hardwick was not bad either but I kept looking and scratching my head - can anyone else see a bit of a mix of Luke Darcy and a young Justin Leppitsch?

Ummmm... sorry Mrs Wrigley - not saying...

I thought I had heard that Don Barry had been released, but we may have picked up another one or two PNG international rookies/scholarship players?

Brisbane had a look at this guy, ..... rookie ?. ( i posted this last July).

Wouldn't be anything more. 21 years old playing in the Townsville comp doesn't scream national draft to me. (posted by Quigley)

This guy has popped up again.

And now he has popped up again, drafted by GC at number 94 ...thankyou Quigley :)

Good luck to him although he could have picked a better team to be drafted by :)

Indeed, i agree, cant think of many other guys drafted from townsville though.

i will let you know when i find another potential rough diamond ;)

Jake Spencer (Melbourne) was recruited from Townsville. Jarrod Harbrow (Bulldogs/Suns) also spent a brief time in Townsville and both attended Townsville Grammar School.

Rob Kerr

"All along we wanted to add a bit of height to our defensive half. We only had 10 players we were prepared to take so we were fairly well focussed on who we wanted and have gone as well as we could have hoped. We can see a spot for each of them and there's a real opportunity for them to develop their games to force their way onto that senior list." - National talent manager Rob Kerr

It seems to me that the rookie draft had a high focus on addressing needs, rather than best available.

Looking at the permission to train list (Justin Clarke, Scott Clarke, Sam Michael and Steven Wrigley) it would seem Crisp took the spot originally intended for Scott Clarke. Scott Clarke must have failed to meet certain criteria to get the nod.

Probably more just rating Crisp a better option than Clarke.

The fact that 3 of the 4 trainees were selected in the draft suggests to me that they had a very targeted approach. I believe the original intention would have been to select all 4 of them, but that Scott Clarke failed to meet expectations. From there it was a case of picking the best available with their last live pick.

Could be either way, Crisp was training with the Saints wasn't he? Perhaps we weren't able to get him up here to train, even if we were interested before hand. Either way, 3 from 4 means we got those guys to train with us because they were targets for the rookie draft.

I think your on the money. I mentioned when the permission to train list came out that I was suprised to see him there. I saw a bit of Scott coming through the U18 rookie search development program. Granted he has some appealing attributes, I'm not suprised we saw more potential in someone else.
