Who's your tip?

We had a pretty poor 2011, wouldn't be surprised if Watson took it again (mainly for his ODI/T20 batting and bowling in all forms). Michael Hussey's few great knocks might put him up there too and Siddle experienced quite a revival. I'd say Clarke without a doubt if his 329* counts (I think the voting is from Feb 2011-Feb 2012 so it should do). He has been a great captain and had some good knocks nontheless.

Michael Clarke, By like a Billion points.

2nd most runs in the last 12 months in tests (behind Rahul Dravid, just.). which included 5 centuries, and one 50. clearly the best australian Bat in the first test in SA, Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide. Ave: 68, SR: 68

In ODI's 2nd for australia behind Watson (17th overall) with an average higher. 1 century and 4 50's.

anyone but him for the AB medal would surprise me....

Clarke should be a distant winner. Hussey to finish second.

In 2011? I think your including his 329.

hussey will go alright, he has full points for the 3 sri lankan matches + decent ODI form.

the time period isnt just the 2011 calender year, its from the World Cup ----> the end of this ODI series.

The voting period is from 6/2/2011 to last night's game in Hobart. This year T20 Internationals ARE included so it makes it a little harder to pick. That said, here's the usual rundown of votes. We'll start with the 50 overs, then the 20 over and finish with the tests.

Thanks for the very thorough breakdown. I remember something about selected media voting. Do they vote on the individual games or do they cast votes on who they think should win overall. Last year Watson won with approx 295 votes. I am trying to ascertain how it is possible to get that many votes? If the system is simply 3-2-1 with weighting Watson seems ridiculously good value. Can someone please elaborate

Having looked into it a little bit more a 3-2-1 is collated from the players and a 3-2-1from the umpires/commentators (ie maximum of 6 votes per game). Last border medal year there were 11 tests, 23 odi's and 16 t20s. Tests votes were multiplied by 6, odi's by 3 and t20s by 2. This year there were 11 tests, 24 odi's and 6 t20s.
Using last years weightings on the votes provided (multipled by 2 to take into account two sets of 3-2-1) Clarke would win 216 to 188. T20 votes would need to multiplied by 5 for Watson to win based on the votes provided. Given the low weighting they got last year that is not going to happen.
In short Clarke will win, but it will be close.
By the way, it is ridiculous that cric Australia does not release the weightings prior to the event. Basically means they can manipulate the result to get their desired winner.
