My view is that it's a lot more likely the Dogs get MD1/Martin for #6 plus/minus steak knives, with MD2 going to someone else for around pick 11.
I agree IanW - GWS are price takers, not price makers in this exercise. They have little choice but to take the highest bid. If Gold Coast nominates Viney our pick 6 is almost certain to be the highest bid GWS gets for MD1 and we may even be prepared to insist on MD1 plus something else we covet.

If Viney must be taken with either pick 2 or 3, there are only three "live" picks before our pick 5 and only 4 "live" picks before our pick 6 - making them even more valuable.

imagine this situation panning out

Trade out picks 5 and 6:
md1 Martin gets homesick, enters PSD after 2 year contract.
JA gets homesick, returns to be with family at NT.
Select a Hansen, Grant, Veszpremi, Myers, Thorp at pick 9.

I give it a 5-10% chance of happening, shit might hit the fan with dogs supporters. Helpless as I would be, all i can do is sit back and LOL:D

I like the sound of that. 2 High picks for a player is ridonkulous. I think there is too much potential talent in the draft for that to go through.
in about an hour we will begin to get an idea with how our draft is going to shape up with F/S bids coming out.

Also whoever gets MD2 for around pick 11 looks like it might be a steal.

We have to many holes on the team to fix. To end up throwing away both first round picks, we would have to be very stupid enough to do so. No other team at this point has two first round picks, except Melbourne, and they wont use any of theirs to bid for a MD pick. So not like we have a threat we need to counter to give away both first round picks. It would be the worst call we could make. Martin is a good player, but to say he is worth two first rounders? How many 17 year olds are rated a top 3 pick the year before a draft, remain so when the draft comes around. For all we know he could drop back and have others over take him.

Give up one of the two first round picks, plus maybe a player or a later pick to sweeten the deal. And use the other pick on another good young player.

Just on that point, taking minidraft players will buy you a year to find out which of your current kids can play footy.

Yes, you wont be playing them this year ... but they wont be taking up a list spot, either.

I'd also be strongly considering at least one of the American rookies, as they dont count against your list.
I'm really enjoying your contributions here IanW, welcome, and keep up the good work.
Ha, you wouldn't be a salesman for GWS would you?

Look I seriously hope our match committee is to switched on to even consider trading out both picks 5 and 6 for anything short of a deal that is tilted dramatically in our favour. It is just far to much to give up.
I am all for fairness in trading generally, but our position re this draft is just to important to the future, and even the very viability of our club. We can ill afford to take deals that stretch us.
We need absolute top bang for our buck this time around, it might be a once in a decade opportunity for us to set up our own future. If we allow ourselves to be rail-roaded into parting with both our top picks by external pressure it would be disastrous.

To our MC I say ...hold your nerve.

So am I right in saying that all the F/S lodgement is in within the next 45 mins? As in we know if GC have nominated they will use a pick on Viney / we know what pick we need to use for Hunter is?

Pretty sure the bidding happens on Monday. Today is just where we choose if we want to nominate Hunter to be taken as a F/S officially.

As I understand it the clubs who are bidding must lodge their bids by 2:00pm today. The clubs with possible Father/Son selections (us with Hunter) than have until Monday at 10:00am to consider whether to use the relevant pick on their f/s or whether to pass.

Nuh-huh. Not correct.

GWS want established players as well as draft picks, specifically a big bodied defender, a ruckman and maybe a small forward, plus our usual addiction to compo picks.

*Everyone* has enough currency to play.

Specifically, Geelong own a number of good older players, a compo pick and their own first rounder. They package nicely into MD2.

Similarly, Melbourne could trade #11 and Jamar rather than a #4.

GWS are price takers - they have no choice but to take the highest bid offered for each MD pick. They cannot keep the MD picks for themselves.

I didn't say that we will be the only high bid for MD1, but pick 6 would certainly take a hell of a lot of beating, and if someone did beat it, that's the risk we take.

Mutt,

The thing is, once you start putting players on the table "highest bid" becomes a value judgement - for example, #6 is higher than #11, but if Carlton offer #11 and Warnock as versus WB offering #6 then it depends on how much GWS like Warnock.

That said, Im happy that MD1 is worth about pick 6 straight up, and I'd do that deal.

I don't think we are disagreeing about anything other than whether pick 6 will be the best offer for MD1. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. If pick 6 gets trumped by a pick over 10 and a second string ruckman I'd live with that.

Mentioned previously - feel very nervous giving up picks 5 & 6 for a 17yo 65kg kid who may never settle in Melbourne

Could end in tears big time after we put 50 games into him and then heads back to WCE as Kerr's replacement

I thought nominations, means that GC nominate today if they want to bid on Viney, etc.

Monday morning is then the time in which Melbourne choose whether to bid on him, or not...

I'm sure you guys have heard the rumours,

GWS have cut Richmond out the deal.

Pick 5 + Pick 6 For Jack Martin looks the go.

You guys will probably get royally screwed doing this. Those are two pretty valuable picks, with Melbourne using Pick 3 on Viney you've effectively given up Picks 4 + Pick 5 for Jack Martin.

Last year Gold Coast gave away just Pick 4 for J. O'Meara, who clubs were in a frenzy over because of how good he was. Hope you guys get the best out of this deal, hopefully it backfires on GWS. Don't see it happening though, Pick 5 + Pick 6 will land them Brodie Grundy and someone like O'Rourke, McCrae or even Plowman.

It appears that Chris Grant is correct - today we nominate Hunter as a potential f/s selection. Monday morning it is all sorted out via the bidding process. So we have to wait until Monday!

You really think the club is stupid enough to trade out two high first rounders for a kid who hasnt played? It simply wont happen. My God the number of lobotomy's going on must ramp up this time of year or something

Good luck over at Tigerland.
