Re: U18 players in the VFL

Viney, as a Melbourne contracted player, was granted special permission to play with our VFL affiliate.

It's not regular, but there is a rule about a 23rd player which can be a TAC Cup player unless I'm mistaken.

Re: U18 players in the VFL

I thought the AFL changed the rules covering VFL/TAC players to allow Vic players to be on a par with their WA/SA counterparts e.g Jaeger O'Meara playing WAFL last year.
Yep, there is the 23rd player rule for the upgrade from TAC Cup to VFL. The Bendigo Bombers use it frequently, last season Sam Kerridge played 3 games for the Bombers which increased his exposure for the draft.

Re: U18 players in the VFL

Witts and Hartley played for Collingwood VFL Team after they played in the u-18 Champs.

Also we can get a 23rd Player from the Murray Bushrangers

Re: U18 players in the VFL

My observation is that the GUN under 18 players - think those that are certain top 15/20 draft possibilities never play as the 23rd player in the VFL.

I am assuming there must be reasons.

Yep - The Gold have played 3 23rd players this year - the one who is alligned with the Pioneers is Commanche Walls.

Re: U18 players in the VFL

David Swallow finished 4th in the 2010 Liston as an underage player.

A few guys who are really putting in some strong performances this year.

Leigh Masters (Coburg Tigers) has had a super start to the season for the Tigers this year. A ball winner who is averaging 18 possessions a game across half back and the midfield. A strong decision maker who has come from a long way back from an interrupted pre season, Masters showed his wares as the 23rd player for the Bendigo Bombers(Gold) in his final TAC year and was very good in the few games he played. Now 20 years of age, Masters has matured and has really stepped up to the plate of being a senior player.

Willie Wheeler (Coburg Tigers) was on everyone's radar last year, has stepped up to the plate again this year. A ball winner who is averaging nearly 20 possessions a game, and 7 handball receives. A small midfielder who could be a very, very good option for an AFL side wanting a small inside midfielder cum forward.

Heath O'Farrell (Port Melbourne Borough) the 21 year old midfielder from the Oakleigh Chargers has done his time in the Port Melbourne reserves and has stepped up to play a key role alongside VFL superstars Sam Dwyer, Shane Valenti and John Baird.

Jordan Williams (Bendigo Gold) made the cut for the VFL state team squad, averaging 16 possessions a game, his run and carry, damaging foot skills and tenacity at the balll have shown he is serious about another crack at the top level after being delisted as a Hawthorn rookie at the end of 2011.

Josh Freezer (Bendigo Gold) is one of my favorites, a medium defender who can play tall or small. Averaging 15 touches a game, 6 marks (1 contested), 2 tackles a game and has a sublime left foot that sees him constantly kick over the top of the zones. One of my favourites that I would love to see on an AFL list.

Jackson Coleman (Sandringham Zebras) was touched on earlier, he has kicked 12 goals in 4 games, a solid return for a player straight out of TAC Cup footy (albeit as an overager). A strong mark and a smart footballer, he has kicked straight (12.0) and been a real contributor around the ground. I would not be surprised to see him have several clubs look at him come December.

Stephen Witkowski (Williamstown Seagulls) has also been selected in the VFL state squad on the back of a superb start to the 2012 season. A player who has come on in leaps and bounds this year playing in a key deffensive post for the high flying seagulls.

A young kid by the name of Corey Buchan has gone back from the Dandenong Stingrays to Frankston Dolphins and belied his little frame to really step up and begin to play a crucial role in Frankston's resistance. Starting to really hit his straps and is a smart footballer who uses his nous more than his speed to get to the right spots. Definitely one to look out for.

A couple of others to seriously look at include Matt Boland, Adam Cockie, Kane Lambert, Dean Putt, Dean Towers, Leigh Kitchin, Marc Lock, Marcus Darmody, Matt O'Dwyer, Sam Dwyer

Jordan Williams stats "poop" all over Dean Towers',.........18 possessions V 16, 6 tackles v 2, 5 marks v 4.....73% effective v 66%.......YET Towers made the VFL team and Williams was cut.........Williams is also younger than Towers.....Well done Gerald Fitzgerald, one for your boys!

Isn't Schloithe already on Freo's list snoop?

Definitely a Freo rookie. Has had 2 or 3 very impressive games in the league for South Fremantle after been dropped to the reserves for a couple of weeks. Looking like a good pick-up, but is playing more in the midfield then the forward pocket, which is what we thought he was drafted as.

Perhaps thinking of Coleman Scahche from the North Ballarat Roosters?

@HFF what can you tell me about the Frankston trio:
Khan Haretuku
Kyle Martin
Leigh Osborne

All look to have something and have really surprised me in the VFL v Tas game. Haven't seen Frankston play this year so any notes are good notes.

Khan Haretuku was a former St.Kilda rookie, probably wasnt ready at the time. At 22, he is more ready to play now than he was as an 18 year old.

has played predominantly deep forward, but has showed his talents as a ruckmen with a 15 hitout, 4 goal effort against Geelong in round 4.
A big strong prescence up forward, his ungangly kicking style looks awkard, but effect (14 goals, 6 behinds).

At a glance; Khan Haretuku
11 possessions per game
2 goals per game
1.5 contested marks per game
4.5 uncontested marks per game
5.5 hitouts per game

Leigh Osborne is an interesting one, really came out of no where this year for the Dolphins, he has been the defensive general down back. a neat kick, his run and carry has been a feature this year. not a big guy, but will not shirk a contest and put in 110% every time.

At a glance; Leigh Osborne
18 possessions per game
2 marks per game
3 tackles per game

Kyle Martin has been the best Dolphin by a mile this year. Averaging 24 possessions a game, Martin's ball use has been a real feature, running off a wing and playing on ball. I did catch the state game, and that high half forward was a different role he has played at Frankston. A tidy kick who makes every possession count, he is one player who has certainly started the year off in searing form..

At a glance; Kyle Martin
24 possessions per game
4 marks per game
4 tackles per game

Hey Knight, while your here, what ever happened to Tom Sundberg? thought he was a shoe - in the get drafted last year, but has literally fallen off the map in 2012.

Anyone else you were impressed with in the state game yesterday? (cough, Adam Marcon cough?, Michael Musicka cough, cough)

I think only myself and Snoop had Musicka getting drafted last year, but I still firmly believe he should have been drafted. Quick, skillful and can play anywhere on the ground. He would have been an excellent pick as a rookie. I didn't see the state game, but Musicka has been in good form back in Tasmania. Quite the attacking player, and having an impact on the scoreboard too.

When I pick a favourite, I'm on for the long haul. :p

I watched the game yesterday and I was super impressed with him.

Kicked the opening goal of the match from a neat left foot kick. Put his body on the line a number of times yesterday, showed a but off toe and has tidy skills.

If I remember correctly, a ball winning midfielder who was solid across the championship for Tasmania last year? I had spoken about him as a possible rookie pick up for the Bombers, but obviously nothing eventutated.

Another one the Tasweigan commentators were going on about was Brady Jones. Jones wicket kept in a number of Sheffield Shield games for Tasmania last year, seemed the commentators couldnt get enough of him, I would have had Musicka ahead of him.

I was sitting next to recruiter at the game and he was impressed with Musicka. It will be interesting to see what eventuates.

I was certainly impressed with his endeavor in what was otherwise a lopsided affair. He and Jade Cox (spelling?) were impressive, Jones was good, albeit late in the second half of the game.

Musicka was largely an outside player in the Championships last year, playing off a wing and sometimes half back. Did enough to impress but didn't really dominate all that much, his form was probably better back in Tasmania. This year he looks to have taken his game to a more attacking level - something he always promised, but didn't always deliver consistently.

I've heard of there being some interest in him. But obviously we're still at a very early stage.
