I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea either but I reckon watts will blossom at a decent club and we already have moloney and Martin.... I think we will be canvassing all options at securing a power forward.
We won't get buddy.. Any other players you think we might be interested in ?

If we trade Longer for anyone, I'll go ballistic and you'll see me as the guy running in front of an incoming train.

Seriously, that guy's got something unique. You don't just trade someone like that after what he's shown.

Maybe I was too generous with longer to watts , what about patty k for watts? That's probably more reflective of watts worth at the moment... I think if pattyk doesn't establish himself this year he is gonski anyway

For agruments sake, that is a much better comparison, but i'm not sure Watts is the miracle forward we need. I would still value Karni more at the moment than getting Watts. I don't think our forward line is going to be as horrible as everyone makes out after Brown is gone. It will take a period of adjustment, but i think we can have options there going forward. I would rather us make do with honest players like Lisle and Martin, and maybe Dadsy, and still look towards drafting a top KPF.

Watts is not a power forward.

I can really see the Lions doing a trade like that tbh... if the rumours are true we won't be losing anything and we both get a decent prospect. I'll be unhappy but that is how footy is sometimes. I'm with the other in respect to Watts being a CHF, he just won't make it unless he plays as a roaming forward ala St.Nick. I see him more as a link man forward of 50 running through the midfield and pushing up on the wings permanently. In a decent side I seriously can't see how any one could match him athletically, he would be faster than most wingman (ran something like 2.8sec 20m during draft), taller than all wingman and his kicking is really under rated would be one of our best ball users. Just needs to get out of Melbourne the whole team has gone backwards somehow with even their older players lacking in fitness etc.

I am enjoying hearing other people's views on the pending draft/trades. This was the reason why I became interested in bigfooty. Boyd has been stated as the obvious but it's not going to happen. Looking forward to seeing Dunstan in the champs but for some time now I have been quite interested in Scharenberg from SA. Yes, he is that utility type player that we supposedly have an abundance of already but I did hear somewhere that was Geelongs strategy of drafting. He also gets quite a nice wrap in this article:

SA's other top draft prospect is key position Tiger Scharenberg, who played league football last year. Scharenberg was coached by Port Adelaide premiership coach Mark Williams at Immanuel College and has been described by Williams as the best schoolboy footballer he has seen and like a young version of Wayne Carey.

Scharenberg played down the big rap, stressing he plays football "just to enjoy it".

"It's what I love to do so I'm just trying to keep improving and make the most of it," he said.

"I'm only young and I've got plenty of things to work on, so I'm just trying to make myself a better player. Hopefully that could lead to good things in the future."

If we did get him, IMO he'd benefit from being a third tall instead of being the main point of focus. Melbourne could almost play him like that if Clark and Dawes were ever in the team at the same time, but we definitely could in our structure.

Exactly would not be a focal point but a more mobile link IMO

Scharenberg is interesting ATM we have a surplus of utility types. Do we pull the trigger on the best player for his type or so we get the 2nd or 3rd best kpp/inside mid? With our list being young( yet out core midfield group the 3Rs will peak within 3 years ) I would trade in a key forward or draft a mature one I think we are past the point of developing a lottery kpp at this stage. I would roll the dice on scharenberg especially with his skill set being a lot more polished than lester/karnezis. After Ace is delisted he would play a 3rd type perfectally as the utilities we have are more defensive 50 besides karnezis.

Just as an aside, I think we have guys who can play multiple positions but are being groomed with a particular role in mind. If Lester is the club's future big bodied midfielder, then we're probably less likely to use him in defence. It is the same up forward - perhaps we need to no longer think of Karnezis as the potential 3rd tall.

If you slot those guys into the positions for which they are being groomed, then we actually do lack some versatile types in the younger cohort,

Taking Lester out of the equation, in terms of a guy who can play short or tall in defence, we need to start thinking about grooming a replacement for Patfull. While Patfull has been a wonderful servant of the club, I think the perfect scenario would be to have someone who brings the same defensive capabilities as him but can also be a genuine playmaker in the back half. I've cited Sam Fisher as a good example of a type of footballer that would fit in well with our list. We used to select two players in defence in Patfull and Drummond who were roughly the same size but brought very different skill sets. Can we find a player who has the best of both players? From the little I've seen, Scharenberg isn't quite that but he does bring that all-round skill set and the ability to play short and tall. More importantly, he strikes me as a really smart footballer and I love the thought of having a really good reader of play controlling things down back.

While someone to play that role isn't right the top of my list in terms of priorities, if he's the best footballer available, I don't believe we have a surplus of his "type". He is potentially a reasonable pick for needs as well as perhaps best available.

Failing that and assuming we don't have a tall forward to take, then I'd more than happy to add another midfielder to the mix.

I don't think you'd be drafting Scharenberg with a top 5 pick unless you are confident he will be a midfielder. As a midfielder I liken him to maybe a Scott Pendlebury type as he is as similar height and weight and is slippery, skillful and his ability to remain calm under pressure, find space and kick goals.

Others will probably disagree with me.

I always thought Karnezis, AKA Greek Adonis, would have been able to do that. :(

I think that will ultimately be the case because those in between type tends to slip down the draft order most years. But if he's a top 5 player then there's no reason for him not to be taken with a top 5 pick.

Hopefully, our pick is more in the 8-12 range!

Still a chance. How much inside footy has he played in the seniors?

He played very good in the with the AIS-AFL Academy over in Europe as a midfielder who kicked 3 goals. Easily the best on ground for that match. I'm hoping he plays a similar role in the champs. For mine, his future is in the midfield.

I'm thinking we will finish with a pick around 8-12. Towards the end of the season our fixture is reasonably soft.

Surprisingly enough, his in my phantom draft. Don't recall seeing him mentioned anywhere.

Blake Acres – Utility – (188cm/83kg)
One who could bolt as we get closer to the draft. He can play down back, forward or in the midfield. He has very good skills and a big body to come in from day one. Good overhead mark and can impact the scoreboard. One to watch.

Sounds like Harwood mk.2

I'm not sure the recruiters will be paying much attention to a game against the best young footballers Europe has to offer. ;)

I suspect he'll play midfield time this year. But, from the bits I've seen, he's a natural on a half back.

I actually think you would be surprised at how many would scouts would be playing close attention. I know for a fact that the Port ones were.

It's great having players with the ability to play multiple positions. He played on Jess Hogan last year in the champs. From memory he did well considering he used to be a bit shorter than he is now and Hogan was still the same height as he is now.

I'd be very happy if we got him on draft day.

They freely admit to putting less stock in how players perform against Division 2 sides. Why would they focus on a game against a group of players who are probably 3 or 4 levels below? That doesn't make any sense.

I could certainly see that recruiters would take the opportunity to see how the AIS players deal with the change in environment, being overseas and retaining professionalism when on tour. I could see that watching their training performances against their peers would be immensely beneficial.

But, if most players are assessed on the balance of what they produce over the course of at least a couple of years, that AIS game against a European selection would be so far down in terms of importance. It would rank below every under 18s state game from the past two years and probably most of the local games (State league or TAC cup) that these guys play.

Put it this way, if Scharenberg doesn't play another game this year, the recruiters won't be citing his excellent performance against a bunch of Eurovision wannabes. They'll talk about his form as an underager last year and what he has done at club level.

ACRES been on the radar since late last year and has played some outstanding football in the WAFL Colts competition. I would think he would go in the first round but he has just got an injury to his shoulder that might push him back to round 2 pick.

Was Dayne Swan able to do that in his third year?

Personally I think it is absurd as to why some people write players off so early in their careers. There are just so many examples of players that have taken over 3-4 years before they make that next step. Just b/c Karnezis is not at Trent Cotchin levels yet, why do you naturally assume that he never will b/c he is has

Honestly, give guys a chance before writing them off. The demand for 17-21 year olds players to just instantly perform out of junior footy against battle hardened professionals, generally be Gen Y'ers, does my head in and simply unrealistic.

Hey, why you knocking Eurovision. Don't you know that luminaries such as Bucks Fizz, Brotherhood of Man have won the bloody thing. Even our own Olivia Newton John come fourth, not forgetting the New Seekers being robbed in 1972 coming second behind the classic Vicky Leandros' Après toi.:p

Whilst I agree they don't put in near as much attention with players who perform good against Division 2 sides. They are obliged to take notes down regardless.

With my post about Scharenberg being BOG in that match as a midfielder kicking goals, I was hoping they would take notice and the SA Coaches play him in that role throughout the champs.

There's a lot more involved in recruiting rather than just a players stats. Skills, pressure, leadership, making the right decisions, getting into the right spaces and etc.

His form was pretty good as an underager played well against some bigger bodies and some of the more highly rated prospects like Hogan.

I was not saying that his game in Europe was going to make him firm as a top 10 pick or anything of that ilk. But it makes him a bit more recognized among recruiters/scouts.

Plus didn't both teams have a certain amount of AIS-AFL Academy players playing? I thought they split them up to make it a bit more even?

My early pick for us is Nick Robertson from WA, we seem to be developing a preference for that utility type height. A strong endurance base is a trend that we seem to placing a high emphasis on and he has that one covered.

A caveat on this selection is Voss still being our coach next year, if someone else is at the helm the grocery list could change dramatically.
