AFL Club
Carlton
The 2013 fixture is due for release some time this month, so I thought it may be good to have a thread where we can discuss everything fixture-related.

Some games have already been announced, however most remain unknown to supporters at this stage.

This thread is to track any news which may arise with regards to Carlton's 2013 fixture, and the OP will be updated as more news comes to hand.

Very few games are confirmed with regards to their status as Home or Away matches, so unless it is a confirmed away game, Carlton's name will appear first.

Of course, if the mods deem this to be unworthy of a thread, I'm happy to make it a MEGA THREAD where we can discuss the fixture as a whole - not just Carlton's. ;)

Round 23

Each club will have one bye in season 2013, spaced across the three rounds being round 11, 12 and 13. Confirmation - http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/149804/default.aspx

As part of the AFL's efforts to ensure the draw is a fair one, it has been confirmed that all sides who missed the finals in 2012 will be scheduled to have a maximum of two return meetings against 2012 finalists. For us, Collingwood of course takes one of those spots, whilst the second side is not confirmed as yet. I would think that it will be an interstate side, however playing Geelong so early in the season could result in a return match against the Cats later in the year.

What do you think the rest of our fixture will look like? Discuss away.

I would actually love two games against the hawks. They are the benchmark right now and a real bogey side for us. When we can beat them we will know we are thereabouts.

Also think we should get two vs suns because after the humiliation of our loss to them our relationship with them must now qualify as a rivalry. :D

We play you guys at Etihad in Round 3. Shame it isn't at the MCG, could have gotten a fairly decent crowd and we don't often play you guys there.

Essendon round 11 and 22

"Malthouse will have double blockbuster clashes with Essendon in 2013, with the Blues set to play the Bombers in Rounds 11 and 22 next season."

I'm inclined to never believe anything written in the Herald Sun, but I'll update the OP regardless. :thumbsu:

If that does turn out to be the case, I am amazed that we aren't playing the Bombers early in the year. Was sure that we'd be playing them early on, probably round 4 as zee suggested.

I read somewhere, yesterday or the day before, that we are playing the Suns at Metricon on July 27.

That'd be round 18. Wikipedia has it as that being the case, but I'd like something more official than that. See if you can find confirmation.

Bombers have requested they play us on June 7 (which turns out to be Round 11) because it is the anniversary of our first clash 100+ years ago.

"On July 20, Collingwood return to the Gold Coast in a match expected to test Metricon Stadium’s capacity, while the following week, Carlton, under new coach Mick Malthouse will hit the coast in a match which is guaranteed to capture the attention of the AFL public following the Gold Coast SUNS thrilling upset victory over the Blues in round 22 this year."

Would make for a better game too. Move it to the G. Make it happen, Chappy!

Could get a bumper crowd at the MCG, particularly if we both start the season well. BTW I think it might be our home game (well at least that's what Brian Cook said today).

Hopefully it is yours, which may pave the way for a return match at the G later in the season. Geelong could be the 2nd team from the 8 for us to play.

Supercomputers tackle toughest mathemathics problem in world sport - the AFL draw
THE AFL fixture has been revealed as the most difficult mathematical problem in world sport.
As league chiefs prepare to unveil next season's draw, its complexities have been laid bare by the Canadian company that helps devise it.
The AFL uses British Columbian software firm Optimal Planning Solutions to craft its 23-round fixture.

Wouldnt it be easier for the AFL to split the league into 2 groups of 9, then play 16 home and away games with 1 bye each week. Then take the top 4 teams from each group and go into a 7 week series to determine the minor premiership for the whole league. Each team in the final 8 plays the other 7 teams once.

Then we could have the standard finals series after that.

This system would also allow for further expansion. And at the start of the regular 2 group season, have a night where the AFL draws the two groups and then up pops the fixtures once it is done. And once the home and away series is done, have a draw for the final 7 weeks of games or to determine the fixture for those 7 games.

And to make it so that the system is fair, we have a seeding system where the two grand finalists are in the top seeded group. Then there can be 4 groups of 4 based on their respective ladders. We could also have a rule that there can be no more than 4 interstate teams in a group (which means 5 Victorian teams in each group).

The rest of the league could then go into a single pot and play 'friendlies' until the finals series finishes.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

What happens to the lower ranked teams after their first 16 games? Their season is effectively over? If so, therein lays your problem. As much as seasons are generally over by that point in the season anyway the AFL would suggest that the finances would be ruined for eight to ten teams.

Thats why I suggested the friendlies after round 16... or they could play off for seeding in the next seasons draw. Keep on playing in the hope that by the end of 23 rounds, they have improved their place a bit...

I was just putting it out there for discussion...

It's an interesting suggestion. I do like the idea of making teams play for something of significance. It would definitely be better than the way the system is now where all teams play for is a better draft pick. The current system with teams not giving a damn after about round 15 does not aide player development, as we've seen at Melbourne and dare I suggest a number of our guys still need to work on that area of the game - how many games do we see teams jump out to four or five goal leads on us with plenty of game to play but important players who grew up in that culture not possessing the determination to make a real fight out of it until it's junk time? We've come to expect a long day if we're down by several goals in the second or third while other contenders in the same predicament can and have fought back into games. Perhaps along with it they could install a National Draft lottery system (similar to the NBA) to further encourage teams to not flat out tank.
