He is not in a good way they young bloke, makes it even more sickening that his sister and mum were there in the stands watching him. They would have felt incredibly helpless.

I hope we have future safe guards in terms of equipment, l hope they don't get rid of the bouncer from the game, whether you watch it or not, bouncers and fast balling and play is critical to the success and popularity of cricket.

I wonder what those losers who bag cricket as a soft sport are saying now.

In fact it's a bloody courageous sport especially at a higher level with missiles flying by. It's just that the elite make it look easy when in fact it's the opposite.

I wish Hughes and family all the very best and a speedy recovery.

Injuries to batsmen will always happen unless they go out as Michelin men. The helmet might need adjustment based off medical advice and I agree with that.

Apparently was wearing an older style helmet, manufacturer had released a newer one with better coverage.

Manufacturer has already asked for footage to analyze to see if they can modify, but as I said in my previous post they don't want to add a heap of excess coverage as it would be far more dangerous to limit a batsman's head mobility.

Yep we don't safety equipment interrupting the batsman. It's one of the most classical games going around and for mine very unappreciated.

That is interesting about the old helmet. Guess just very bad luck and maybe the newer made a difference, who knows.

But yep, one less mobile or less vision replacement (on any contact area) is a far worse option than keeping the current one and accepting that accidents/incidents will happen. Like any high (ball) contact sport.

Hughes is a gun and very well trained as is every top level batsmen against faster bowling machines and net bowlers off short runs.

Any amount of teaching doesn't stop accidents/indents happening. Very, very wrong and inappropriate to blame their training.

Hopefully we can get helmets that protect the whole head, but you can see out of.

Firstly, as a longtime cricketer, I hope he makes a full recovery following this sickening accident. Facing a hard ball over a short distance at 90 clicks is bloody dangerous if it goes wrong.
I truly believe the reaction of NSW and Australia cricket to cancel the tour and shield games across Australia is a mark of respect for Phil is disgraceful. He got seriously hurt and unfortunately it happens but to cancel cricket, really!!
Are we now going to cancel the Boxing day test after lunch on day 1 if someone goes down and gets taken to ED, I don't think so.

I'm not going to dispute the cancelling of the games (which l support out of respect, but l understand your point of view), but you are right that we have too many knee jerk reactions in sport and society, i.e. the bump in the game and removing much of its toughness, one bouncer accidently kills a bloke (better change the whole industry that to make it harder for guards).

Ball travelled at 135kph which means as soon as it hits the ground it will cover the length of the pitch within a second so when the ball lands short of a length the batsman has to commit to a defensive position pretty quickly. Turning your head away from the line of sight of the ball means you do not know where it is going and you hope it either misses you or hits you in the back.

We are not talking about 160+km Shoaib Akhtar rockets. University of WA timed Lillee bowling in 1975 at 155kph and Thompson was estimated at 160kph and I doubt the west indian bowlers were slower. Batsmen used to bat with a cap on back then. I think players are relying too much on protection and conceding they are going to get hit and less on keeping your eye on the ball and avoid getting hit.

I can understand the position of some bemoaning the fact that this round of the domestic comp has been cancelled, but I tend to look at it this way.

Phil Hughes has played for multiple states, as have many players across many states, has been part of the system over a decade and has played as part of international teams over the last 6 years. As such I suspect that there will be players, coaches and support staff on each state team who will count the bloke as a friend and who will each, in their own way, be effected by what has happened. I can imagine that if the players were out in the middle and the news came through that the worst had occurred that there would be very few men out there who would want to continue that days play at the minimum. I actually applaud this decision by Cricket Australia to cancel this round of the comp so that they can rally around one of their own and support each other through what I am sure is a terrible time for many of them. Cricket seems to be a sport stuck in a time past in some ways and personally I see that mindset to the game as a positive, and especially at a time like this where the health and well being of their own (both victim of the accident and those effected by its outcome) are made the priority over a round of matches.

Seconded, but your point of being stuck in the past isn't so much a bad thing in some ways, people still criticise tests, but they remain some of the most exciting bits of sport anyone will ever see. If they keep changing the game l will gradually lose interest as l did in NRL and union to a minor degree.
