Short answer is yes.

There is a bidding system but effectively you only need to match another club's bid with your next available draft selection. If you have 3 players who all have second round bids placed for them by other clubs, you would only need to use your 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounders.

I wonder how long our academy rights would last if the top 5 picks one year were all in there and we effectively got picks 1 2 3 4 5 in the draft for our 1st 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th round draft picks .... ?

Lachlan Black, Jack Brown, Archie Adcock, Chase McGrath. F/S works the same way as Academy right?

Yep, it's looking good. :thumbsu:

If that were to occur, I think I'd wear the loss of Academy rights if it meant getting the 5 best footballers of a draft year!

Size matters,Are you suggesting that Tickner got ahead of himself?

No, I'm suggesting that it's not a guarantee to be drafted if you are highly rated within the academy. I just hope that Dawson and Hammelmann don't slack off at all thinking they will get drafted (not that i'm saying Tickner slacked off either). I used Tickner as an example as most people thought he would be drafted earlier this year.

I'm a big fan of Dawson. IMO he is the most well rounded Qld prospect since Whitecross and a far better player than any of this years academy kids. Big hopes for him.

I would urge people too cool their jets about Hammelman. He has some nice attributes, but some concerning flaws too IMO. Similar player to what Freeman was this year.

Dawson played at my junior club before heading to the Hornets. High flyer who loves to take marks, wasn't the most athletic but has a decent footy brain and is a hard worker. At the time I saw some AFL potential but I guess going to the Hornets accelerated his development with decent coaches and facilities. He was a forward that played midfield as well. Reminds me a bit of a high flying Karnezis from memory but I haven't seen him play since he left the Tigers and I'm guessing he has been trained to a different position at the Hornets.

Spoil sport :p Get excited everyone.

Bottom aged key positions always have flaws. Hammelmann has a few but also quite a few big strengths as well. Compared against he piers he stacks up pretty well and it is worth noting that he is two years younger than Freeman.

On the flaws the only one which is a particular concern is his attack on the ball. He can be a bit passive and look to avoid body clashes. He is not a kid who will run through someone to get at the ball. I think he has been getting feedback on this and there were times when I saw him play that you could see it click in his head that he needed to go hard and he did. Sometimes going hard was not the smartest play but he did get in there and crash the pack or try and crunch the man. It is not a natural instinct yet though and he still sits back a bit too much when he is second to the ball. Also he needs to straight line the ball more often rather than running around it like he does now a bit too much.

Apart from that though he has very good height, excellent hands above the head and below the knees, good athleticism and a nice feel for where to lead. His leading could improve a bit but he gets separation fairly easily and gets shots on goal which is what you want. He is elusive for a guy his size and is a nice finisher with good goal sense. In short plenty to like imho.

Interesting comments SizeMatters - the few people I know at Redcliffe say he was clearly the star performer at the club since under 12s.

Yes, he was the best player there no doubt. I just had a few problems in his game while he was at Redcliffe but since he had moved onto Aspley and been part of the AIS and academy it has no doubt accelerated his development. Not to say anything bad about the Tigers but if you have any talent at all you are better off going to Aspley or even Sandgate ASAP.

Edit: Also Aden Rutledge played at the Tigers as well but moved onto Sandgate IIRC.

I'm just trying to not go over the top. Some of us got burnt by Conway & Tickner... ;) :p

I agree with most of what you said, especially his attack on the ball and contest, hence my reference to Freeman who had similar issues. Hammelman is far more skilful and further along in his development than Freeman, but is a similar style of player with similar flaws.

Are you as strong on Dawson as I am?

I have to admit that I have not seen Dawson at his best. When I have seen him he has looked like a very nice player but he has not taken over the game like he has done at other times. I would really have liked to have seen the NT game.

With that said you do not make the AA side as a bottom aged, div 2 player without doing a hell of a lot right and I am very hopeful that we will see a lot more of him next year.

I concur with Quigley, I think Dawson is definitely the best prospect for next year. I don't rate Hammelman as highly as I have kept a close eye on him all year and only seen limited signs. He has good skills but is lacking in other areas mentioned. Maybe with a good preseason in the gym he can overcome some of his flaws. I still think the Lions made a mistake not taking Tickner. Hopefully he will come back this year and be able to participate in the state team as did Freeman. I feel he was unjustly done by a little as he was used to prop up both the forward and back line as required and not really allowed to settle in his appropriate position. Conway was much the same but fortunately got lucky with a Rookie listing with Banfield going. Very happy to see him there but would have been happier to see both of them.
I have large doubt on the wisdom of taking Archie Smith. I guess no one will know for a couple of years whether this was the right decision or not. Good luck to him, he may just turn out to be another Nic-nat which would be like winning the lotto for the Lions. But winning lotto is fairly rare to say the least.

He doesn't have to end up as good as Naitainui for it to be a draft win. As a rookie selection, he could simply turn out to be a half-decent second stringer and we'll be in front.

I would have thought the rookie list is the perfect way to test the local talent like Archie and Conway. If they work out we are ahead of the game, if not, what have we really lost? Even nominating Freeman didn't costs us anything as we wouldn't have used that pick in any event. I think we should rookie at least two Qld'ers every year, both with a view to growing the % of locals on our list and as another means of dealing with the go-home factor.

Cox was a rookie lister. If Archie is not at least as good as him it is a wasted pick ;)

I am not the biggest fan of Archie's work but I am happy to be proven wrong.

I can see a clean out of the talls after next year. The pressure is going to be on out tall group. Hopefully we have something in mind to actually get them all games.

Not sure if this has been mentioned already.

In the interim, the players that are there will be placed in front of more eyes next year. NSW will play seven TAC Cup games in 2014, and Queensland six, up from four this year. The NT and Tasmania will play only four each, which is a shame, but the extra games will at least give recruiters more opportunities to assess the second division kids against decent rivals.
Six of the 30 kids in the current AIS-AFL Academy group are from Queensland and NSW, which is encouraging, although seven years ago Queensland had 11 players drafted and another eight rookied.

POBT, Yes you are right. If he turns out to be just a good ordinary player then we are in front and the rookie list is the best place to start. It is just my humble opinion that it wont happen with Archie. I like the kid and would be more than happy to have egg on my face in 2 years time. GO Archie!
