Petrie is also a good case study for the changing role of the key forward. The most goals he's kicked in a season is 58. In essence, he's a 2 goal a game forward which is hardly outstanding. But if I had a choice between him and (say) Jack Riewoldt, I'd take Petrie every time, even without the ability to go into the ruck. Petrie creates a contest every single time the ball goes near him. Riewoldt may be the better full forward and the more likely to kick regular goals, but I think Petrie's game is more suited to the modern style of footy.
Has a less punchable face too.

Still very early days but I guess if we are going to finish with the tin spoon (surely that's one better than wood?) then the next best KPF type is likely the best bet, even if it is another ruck/forward. I am liking the Petrie analaogies and it makes me more comfortable with the idea of Wright.

I dont know if it is so much the changing function of a forward more the kind of player Petrie is. Petrie makes the team function better around him because of his consistency than Jack who seems either hot or cold or selfish or too unselfish. Petrie has always been a difficult match up for us.

I dont know would you rather wake up with wood or a tinny sensation?

How can everyone think Wright is the next Petrie? He has more a chance of being a bust than a star. Drafting KPPs is almost always a lottery.

Really? There are undoubtedly KPP busts taken with top 10 picks, but the percentages are much much better for their success compared to anywhere else in the draft. And more chance of being a bust than a star is crazy.

Actually multiple statistics would say that your best chance of getting a KPP players is in the first round, especially a forward. The hit rate is actually quite good. Would be nice for you do do a small bit of research before flying off with half cocked statements, they get a tad tiresome

I am starting to come round to the idea of getting Wright.
Imagine, Wright in the square clunking marks or bringing balls to the ground and Close and Hammelman making good leads toward the 50, creating space for our mozzies. Wright is also apparently a good lead and has good speed and endurance.

One poster using Petrie as a benchmark of what would be a good development outcome/team role for Wright = everyone thinks Wright is the next Petrie? Okay man...

So for the sake of discussion, you'd prefer it that we speak of all future forward prospects as likely failures? Okay man...

No draftee is a sure thing. The higher the pick you take them, the better the talent you get to pick from, the better the chances they will turn out. I would say there are more hits than misses with KPF in the top 5 picks.

Will be interesting to see where Weller ends up going. Lots of talk about him being a top 10 pick, others see him drifting to the 2nd round. Will be interesting being a top rated QLD product. If we have our 2nd pick live, and he is there, would we take him ?

Surely we would. Sounds like the sort of midfielder we could use.

not so sure of that. We've got a fair few good solid mids and he's not a super extractor (not that he's had to do this). I'd prefer someone a bit more explosive with some real run and carry ability. Tend to think we already have Aish in his role, maybe someone with a bit of line breaking ability and flair might be a better option for us in round 2.

Haven't seen him, but he does seem to be a bit of an outside, line breaking type. I know we are keen for a bit of pace, but i think we need some inside pace, more so than outside.

Wow, drawing a long bow there. I was saying basically the complete opposite. I.e teams who get too clever based on probabilities and try to get a sure thing often come unstuck.

Post in question for the literate types who care about context.

You really should google the definition of "most" and "everyone"

Yeesh, took your post way out of context. Sizematters is the Tambling of this board.

Ottens and Petrie are the type of forward we could expect from Wright, and as has been mentioned, i don't think that is a bad thing. I think most of our prospects are much more leading types, and i think we need a more 'monster' contested type forward. He certainly doesn't seem the gumby ruck type, he does still seem capable of some good leads himself, and seems to have good pace for his size. Any defender would be nervous with a 203cm 100kg+ player standing them in the goal square. The other thing i like about Wright is that he seems to have a good pair of kicking boots. Goal kicking doesn't seem to be an issue for him, as it sometimes is with those ruck/forward types.

Even if we didn't use him in the ruck, and we were still able to play Bergs/Martin as the 2 rucks for example. The fact that he can ruck means if he is going cold or having a rubbish game, you can throw him into the ruck for 5 minutes to get him active. It adds positional options for the coaching box as well. Usually i laugh at the calls from the commentary box to throw a forward into the ruck, but if they actually are a ruck than you can do it.

So now you're saying he's going to be as good as Ottens and Petrie combined!? Welp I'm sold!!

I am in the latter camp to be honest. I am far from sold on him.
