If Petracca maintains his form line for the remainder of the TAC Cup and has a decent draft camp, I really think St Kilda will have to pounce.

If so, you'd think Melbourne wouldn't take both Wright and McCartin. They'll surely be looking at Durdin or a mid with one of their picks.

We could still get one of the two tall forwards even if the Dees cut in line with two picks.

What about GWS though?

Geez, I dunno. They invested in a midfield last year. It would be a massive call to ignore a quality key forward.

Agree to an extent, but I think the Saints have enough distance to travel (given the age of Hayes and Montagna) that they might just jump on best available again this year. I spose a lot depends on how much of a consensus #1 pick there is.

What shall we name the Melbourne v Brisbane rd.19 match-up?

The Petracca Cup?

Last year, St Kilda took Billings, Acres and Dunstan with top 20 picks. I know Petracca is the flavour of the month but, geez, they are worse off than us for a tall forward and don't have a Hammelman to fall back on.

If Melbourne get an extra pick for Frawley you'd think Durdin will be a lock for them along with Petracca if he's still available. Their forward talls are well balanced with Hogan, Dawes, Gawn and Jamar just to name a few while they have Dunn playing at full back who gives away plenty of weight and height each week.

And don't forget Close :)

But they do have Tom Lee who they gave up pick #12 for

didn't they give up a high pick for Tom Lee? That really hasn't worked out has it..

Edit: just a tad slow on that one

How does Melbourne get pick 2? Surely we have that sown up along with Petracca?

Here I was thinking you were a broken record (Leuenberger) when it turns out you are two broken records.

One way or the other, Petracca's emergence as a likely number one is good news for us. Either we get him or we have a better chance of getting one of the significant key forwards.

Incidentally, it seems pretty rare for a team to ignore a clear number one and go needs based with the first pick. But of course, St Kilda have unusual circumstances and Petracca may not be all that clear.

Just on Frawley, he is a restricted free agent and if he does move away from Melbourne it won't necessarily be for huge money. He's played his entire career at a struggling team and he wouldn't surprise me if he was prepared to take a lower offer from a better club.

If we do happen to finsih with a higher pick like 3 or 4, Petracca coming into good form might help still get us 1 or the KPFs. Otherwise, if we miss them, he will be a nice consolation prize.

St. Kilda, Melbourne and possibly GWS are really tiring and could easily finish below us. GWS and Melbourne play each other, Melbourne play us and St. Kilda play the the Bulldogs, but apart from that there'd have to be a massive shock for any of those three to win any more games. If we win two more games for the rest of the season I think we'll have pick 5, as I also think Frawley will get the Dees a top 5 pick.

The Melbourne game is a real threat to us getting a top 2 pick. Will be interesting to see how much either side wants to win it. Can't see us winning another game though.

I'm sitting on the fence with this one, so genuine questions:

Do you put any stock in beefing up the midfield first, then trading in a KPF? I know there have been obvious issues with this in the past (and, yanno, Carlton), but we've also had issues with players languishing in the ressies then going home.

Do we need to start drafting kids, that are more likely to play seniors early, especially with early round draft picks...then trade in mercenary talls for serious coin, a la the Swans? Trickier without the benefit of COLA, and I'm not suggesting it'd be easy, but in concert with project home-grown talls, I'm musing over the validity of the approach.

In theory fine. But that's a big if. We haven't been high on the shopping list for soon-to-be-out-of-contract players.
