He's coming to us as a FA.

In that case, maybe you should post about it in the "2016 draft discussion" thread because he aint eligible for free agency till the end of that season.

I know he is pretty keen to get out of Melbourne last I heard.

Yeah I heard the same thing last time he was out of contract over 2 years ago, along with rumours that Mick Gatto was out to get him. People say a lot of things.

He may be, but we can't get up as a FA until then. We'd have to trade or PSD him if we want him earlier.

If they think McStay will be a forward, perhaps Durdin or Lever to develop down back.
Would be very happy with either and also very happy if we decide McStay is a forward.

Durdin might give better flexibility with Lever possibly the better defernder.

TBH, I am not sure we will have a top 4 pick at the end of the year. Even the Geelong away game, they aren't what they used to be and the Freo game, being at the Gabba I would be quietly confident of us doing an upset. I think 2-2 from the last 4 games should be our target, meaning we'd probably end up with pick 5-7.

I know that there's been a conversation about how McStay looks and plays more like a third tall. But if we remember that he is 19, still quite slight, has barely played senior footy and certainly hasn't spent much time up forward in the seniors, then I'm not sure that we can be all that confident that he won't turn into a genuine key forward.

Imagine him with another 10-15 kgs and 50+ games under his belt. There's no real reason why he couldn't play as a genuine tall. I'm not suggesting he absolutely will but I reckon we should keep an open mind about it. If nothing else, there is an awful lot to work with in terms of natural talent. It isn't a massive stretch to think we could manufacture something out of him that suits our list needs better.

I really hope all the Academy hype doesn't force us to use our 2nd round on MC Hammer. If we could get him with our third pick and more of the academy boys and a father/son in rounds 4, 5 and 6 we would be really well placed.

From there we have some options with our 1st and 2nd rounds. I think we would like a 'big' KPF and a classy and speedy midfielder. If we end up with picks 4/24 we might be a chance to snag 2 metre Peter and maybe Weller if he slides. But I see that as very unlikely now, especially if we keep playing well and end up with lower picks.

If this happens I think we should have a real crack at trying to get angry pants Tyrone off Richmond. I can't see him being worth pick 5 or 6, but may cost us more than our second round. Perhaps our second rounder and a swap of first rounders with Richmond (they jump ahead two or three spots) might get the job done? From there we go for the best young mid we can (Brayshaw, Pickett, Weller or Ahern)

I know he loves the club but I could see Merrett going for a move to GWS. If they signed him to play fullback every week, he might find that attractive. Plus he seems like the kind of guy who might be up for the experience of living in the big smoke.

I don't think GWS will give up much of value for him though.
We only have one other option for the position at this stage, and Maguire could be only one injury away from retirement with his history.
We'd probably have to recruit a mature depth player to cover the position anyway if Merrett left, as none of our young defenders really project as being suited to playing on the really big forwards(Clarke is more of a CHB).
