Y
Not totally convinced on Archie, don't tell James North i said that :). Shows promise at the very least.
yeah who knows how he will progress but Leppa was close to playing him thus year so the club obviously believe he has a bright future.
He doesn't need to be an A grader when he is 3rd in line :)

I think "project player" probably means a year or two less than it used to. Clubs aren't prepared to wait as long these days for developing players to make the grade.

Am I alone in thinking we need to find ourselves a small defender in the draft. I feel like we don't have a guy who can run with the best small forwards in the game.

You are absolutely right and the man in my opinion for that role is Caleb Daniel
From South Australia he is 166cm tall has been rated as a more skilful version and hard version of Zorko so i think he will make the mould perfectly just check his player profile on Bound For Glory

Calebs more of a midfielder, someone who could project well in the small defensive role would be Clem Smith who it seems is going to slide all the way to the rookie

Plus Leppa said last year he didn't want to draft anyone that short and it was only the fact Taylor was still around at 28 they picked him up.

I really hope we draft Angus Brayshaw. Not just because he's such a talented prospect and would be an ideal fit for our midfield, but every time he does something great I can yell out "Well done Angus!". It works on so many levels.

Definately we would be better suited in drafting him this year and then making a play for beams next year if he is still out of contract at the end of the year. Imagine the Midfield with the inclusions of Beams and Brayshaw

I don't think a small defender needs to be a midget. Some of the best defenders against quality small forwards are genuine mid-sized players. Someone like Nick Smith (who I rate in that lock down role) is a genuine 6 footer while a guy like Dale Morris at his best was able to take a small forward out of the game despite being about 190cm. I think as long as you have speed off the mark, agility and football nous, you can play small defender roles.

I think Caleb looks great, but defenders -- far moreso than forwards -- need to be able to instantly switch roles and go third man up in marking contests and intercepts. Having anyone that short in the back half has huge potential to get exploited in the air.

You're talking about a guy who's 12cm shorter than arguably our best ever small defender, Chris Johnson
- 14cm shorter than Chris Scott
- 16cm shorter the Marcus Ashcroft

Small isn't that small.

Medium-well being the best.

He certainly is a rare talent. I hope he puts in for a big pre-season otherwise he'll be looking cooked nearing the end of the year. Might be one of those players where a rest would do him a world of good and return with some real sizzle

Jack Lonie, Dandenong Stingrays captain is quite impressive and like Lewy was Vic Country MVP. Has kicked three goals in today's final. Think he would make a good small forward and developing mid. Anyone got a view?

A Lonie playing for us just doesn't feel right.

I posted this in another thread but I'll rectify my lazyness.

Rocky retweeted this after the aspley giants neafl game yesterday.

Anyone know much about Payne - is he a genuine draft prospect. With the likes of hammer and andrews we might want a midfielder with a late pick or rookie.

Also watched some vfl today and Kane lambert looked handy. 22yo goal kicking midfielder. Anyone seen much of him and/or know why he wasn't drafted last year (when he was 4th in Liston as a 21yo). Had a huge last quarter today as willi came from 5 goals down at 3qtr time to win by 4 goals!

Matty Payne is an AFLQ/NEAFL veteran. Would be pushing 30 by my best estimate.

I came here to post about Payne and what do you know. Really rate him has been unbelievable at NEAFL level this year. He seems like a Zac O'brien type inside midfielder, you don't notice much of him but can find the sticks. Smart footballer I reckon worth a rookie spot.
