Some people just love the life they have.

I played with a kid one year down in Tooradin.

He came from the Cranbourne team and was down playing with some mates he went to school with.

Absolute freak. Would get 30+ every game and was smashing players from top sides like Narre Warren and Berwick despite coming off his second knee reco.

This kid had been sent letters of invite to the draft camp by a couple of clubs - Essendon and Geelong I think - to which he replied "Thanks but no thanks"

I thought he was nuts but as the season went on I realised why he said no.

We would have game time at 10am on Sunday. The kid would turn up at 9:30 with a half empty can of UDL or JB in his hand and get dressed just in time for the first bounce.

After the game he'd sit with the seniors or reserves who weren't playing and sink 4-5 more cans, either out of his bag or from the sports bar.

The point is, he was far happier working during the week as a glazier and playing footy locally, than he ever would've been playing at an AFL club. The media scrutiny he would get for going out on the piss 5 nights a week just wasn't worth the hassle for him to even have a go.

Absolutely LWP, met a fair few like that myself in other sports.

I watched a guy destroy the Scotland international inside centre in a game, then go back to play for his club whilst the other fella signed pro. That's cos the first guy had 5 pints after the game and played arrows with guys from the hosting club, whilst the 'pro' had a protein shake and a leg rub.
All sports are taken so much more seriously these days, I can see why some wouldn't necessarily find it 'fun' a lot of the time and might choose a lifestyle over it.

Hmmm, curious that most of these "shying away from pursuing a talent" involves an inability to moderate their alcohol.

I wouldn't say its an inability. I'm sure these guys could all slow (or stop) getting on the piss.

From talking with the Tooradin kid it was more about his privacy and personal space.

He liked going out with his mates. He was good enough to stay out late and still get in the votes the next day.

Even if he could translate that to AFL level you only need to look at the attention on Dane Swan's personal life and the 'rift' he has with Bucks due to drinking on week nights to see that there are no private moments for AFL players these days.

Jake King can't even hang out with a family friend for a coffee without cameras in his face and public comments from the presidents of other clubs.

I wish I was good enough to play AFL. I don't drink or smoke so the 'professional' attitude is easy to adopt. Even then though, I wouldn't be comfortable with cameras taking pictures of me and my family when we are out and about.

The media scrutiny is becoming less 'Talking Footy' and more 'TMZ' so I can totally understand super talented players choosing to smash state comps while going out on weekends and avoiding the media.

I think we will actually see more of it in the coming years too.

Barrett mentioned several clubs are into Ollie Wines and mentioned Carlton being heavily into him

I reckon we'd be another.

It will take a significant amount of convincing to get a gun player to join Saints just now.

Yes I believe in the rebuild. But I'm a fan. A non-fan looking to get cash and a career will need to see something tangible that justifies them signing. This year is shaping up to be a stinker, so in reality I think it's another year before we're an option that a gun would even consider.

We would have to give up our first pick to get Wines... Plenty of mids out there.

Carlton could do a deal involving Gibbs if Port want him.

Gibbs + blues 2nd for Wines + Ports 1st or something.

i'd love him. i remember his parents saying they most impressed by our recruitment teams in their meetings. we have cap room too. imagine if we somehow got a priority pick, might help to get him in a pick downgrade and then some upgrades

Cant see us (or any club for that matter) getting a PP again. At least not for a nother 8-10 years. Not enough time has passed since the Melbourne investigation. Also if Port didn't qualify for one in 2012 then no team should!

I'd love Wines but he would just cost too much from a trade POV. We should go after guys like Hoskin-Elliot, Haynes, ORourke or Jacksh from GWS. Then there is guys like Allen, Hutchins and Sexton at GC.

Both clubs need to cut their lists so players will be moved on. Good time to go shopping!

If we are going to give up a top 3 pick to go after a mid I would go as hard as possible for Treloar or Sheil in a deal from GWS. They are local boys (from Aspendale) and are going to be absolute beasts.

Still prefer to grab Wright or Goddard though :thumbsu:

Bastard Ollie..

I see Sidebottom, Swallow, O'Rourke etc are still on the market though.

I think we'll be into O'Rourke, if we are must get in early i think.

PAFC confirm young midfielder Ollie Wines has signed a two-year contract extension with the club #AFL

It always looked like that was going to be the case, tight-knit group of younger guys going through that club should be back up near the top in 2 or 3 years. Also, the need for a Wines-type player on our list has decreased since the recruitment of the Manimal

Yeah there were pics on the Port site of player's holiday shots. Older guys like Carlile and Schulz were on travel abroad with wives/gfs. But the young guys mostly seemed to be hanging out together.

Amusingly at end of about 80 player holiday pics, was Dom Cassisi doing runs down the local park, as if he was disgusted by the thought of actually having even a week off - that guy's a machine.

Its OK , we don't need him yet. We wait 2 years then swap him for Milera. Or if Dunstan wants home, we swap for Wines.

On top 3 picks, Paddy McCartin is looking the goods this year. Interview was done with him (here http://madmondayshow.com/2014/03/05/q-and-a-with-paddy-mccartin/), was very impressed with how he has handled his diabetes and his professionalism in that aspect.

Also, Ollie Wines has re-signed.
McCartin would need to grow a bit to be a number 1. Is McCartin the best in AUSTRALIA or just the TAC Cup?
We tend to get carried away with Victorians... Lets raise our eyes a bit and check what is out there in the rest of the country before we rush straight into the TAC cup.
