Yeah, I agree but then you have to wonder what is going on behind the scenes that caused the player/manager to run with this tactic.

I wonder if it is less about contract extension and more about - "hey, remember me? Two times Club Champion and all round nice guy. Never injured and rarely beaten. I wouldn't mind a bit of that Beams/Ryder cash you're flashing around at the moment."
Staring at the likely last contract extension of his career, yeah, it is possible.

Which would be totally fair IMO.

Not the first time we have seen a player/manager try to circumvent the club's "one year extensions for over 30s" policy. Staker did it last year.

Going by what I know of Joel, it won't so much be the $$$, but the length of his contract.

Just at a guess. He'll probably want another 2-3 years.

Which is partly why I was disappointed the club acquiesced. Slippery slope.

Marty Pask put up the following scenario on TWR:

Collingwood:
Gain - Picks 2 & 3 from Melbourne
Lose - Beams to Brisbane

Melbourne:
Gain - Pick 4 & Merrett from Brisbane
Lose - Picks 2 & 3 to Collingwood

Brisbane:
Gain - Beams from Collingwood
Lose - Pick 4 & Merrett to Melbourne

Marty seemed pretty happy with that scenario, but I doubt if Melbourne would approve of it!

Marty is out of his tree. That has Melbourne giving up a top 3 draft pick for Merrett and slightly downgrading another top 3 draft pick.

Absolutely nuts.

Works well for us though, nice of GWS to shout us Dayne Beams with their first pick. Gubby apologising for Fev?

Yep, totally crazy for Melbourne. Not a well thought through scenario by Pask.

Maybe Aker has his hand up Marty's rear end using him as a puppet again, just to troll everyone.

...and as good as Beams is, he ain't worth pick 2 & 3.

Lol, I see what you mean Re: GWS. I'm sure that Marty mentioned picks 2 & 3 instead of picks 3 & 4.

We wouldn't give both to Collingwood keep pick 3 and draft McCartin lol it's a fantasy but.

Yeah but how quickly could that turn into Patfull saying "I've checked things out and now I demand a trade to the Swans/Giants"?

Then it will be us (well, not all of us!) talking up the resume of a departing player and scoffing at unders being offered by his club of choice.

The Patfull situation is really weird. I can't recall a trade scenario like it - where a club/player publicly admits that the player is happy to go or happy to stay and the club isn't really pushing a trade outcome.

I seem to remember something similar happening with Heath Black in 2003/4, where Freo tried to lowball the saints and Black came out and said it wasn't adequate compensation and he'd be happy to stay.

Can't remember if it was the year before he actually got traded or was said to raise the Freo offer that year.

I Searched through a few articles and didn't find anything on it thou, it's just was of those things that stuck in my mind

Yeah he did mention pick 2 and 3 under the assumption that Melbourne receive pick 3 as compensation for losing Frawley.

In any case, that scenario is a massive win for Collingwood and massive unders for Melb. Pask later back tracked and said the deal is not fair on Melbourne. If you take pick 3 out of the equation then it's a lot more even for all parties.

Add Harry O to Melbourne and it would then be fairer to Melbourne but as I have said. Melbourne not getting 3 for chip.
