Qld U18s vs Oakleigh Chargers - Today at Redland
QLD 14-10-94 Oakleigh 13-8-86

Quick notes:

Qld Academy/ u18's Prospects

Those who have been mentioned previously:

Hipwood (KPP) - clearly the stand out for me today - played 99% of the game at CHB - marked well o/head ala Harris Andrews - often found team mates with his delivery ( by hand & foot) - including some exceptional long ranges passes to the chest of team mates - very impressed with him today (to go along with his NEAFL performance last week against Aspley)

Keays (Mid) - very disappointing today - don't know if he was inconvenienced by an injury or illness (???), or just didn't have it today - if you did not know about him coming to the game today as a recruiter, then he would not have rated a mention - everyone is entitled to an "off one" now & then - and maybe I have marked him harshly because of expectations - others may have seen it differently !!

Buzza (KPF) - Kicked 5 - marked strongly at times, put some down at other times, but had a significant influence on the game, and that's what you are looking for from your KPP's

Chol (KPF/Ruck)- lots of "love" for him on the Fantasy Draft threads - at best he looked like he has some potential, but nothing on show today to get overly excited about

Wagner (Mid - HF/HB) - a few sloppy disposals early, but kept at it all day and was a good contributor - demonstrated that he has a good tank, spent long periods on the field and never stopped running - without being a stand out, did his hopes no harm.

Dennis (Ruck) - Clearly beaten at the stoppages most of the time (as was anyone else who QLD threw in there) by Oakleigh's Wenn - Dennis is a string bean and the bigger bodied opponent "pushed him around" whenever there was body on body jockeying, with Dennis holding his own when it was a pure "jump" contest

Those who rarely rate a mention:

Corvo (Med Def) - not sure whether he was on the field at all in the first quarter (if so, did not notice him, nor make any notes), but from the second quarter onwards he impressed with his defensive pressure, positioning and decision making - and his disposal, especially by foot - he has improved considerably, and from what I saw today and last week against Aspley in the NEAFL, I expect him to at least rate a mention through the Championships

Watson (T Def) - hadn't seen much of him prior to today - liked some of his defensive work, especially his spoiling - this will sound strange when his opponent for most of the time (Ridley) kicked 6 goals, but most of these did not come from direct one on one contests (except for one strong lead & mark) - again, happy for others to put me right if they saw it differently)

Also, there were some good moments from Rolls, Filewood & Budarick.

Oakleigh

Have to admit that I did not focus too much on the visitors, my interest was more in the possible selections from QLD, and many of the Oakleigh "notables" were not on show (8 missing in the Vic Metro squad, plus Silvagni (inj??)), but:

Wenn - as mentioned previously, did a great job in the Ruck - was a little limited in his influence around the ground though

Ridley - kicked 6 - was "Johhny on the spot" several times, so credit for being in the right position - kicked well, can't recall any misses (possibly the odd one)

Apologies to the rest, my focus was elsewhere.

Great work Crusha.

So, you liked Hipwood's game better than Buzza? Both seemed to have stepped their games up a few notches.

Trying to rate this as a win. Do we know where the Chargers are rated as a unit this year?

With Close, Andrews, McStay, Freeman we have a few KPP who can/could play either end. Hipwood is sounding promising as another player that might provide something at either end.

Buzza deserves a rookie spot. Saw him play for Mt Gravatt the other week. Showed way more than Archie ever did.

He did mention 8 of their players were playing for Metro so it was far from their full strength team.

Good Stuff Crusha - given Archie Smith is perhaps not kicking on as we would like, reckon Buzza (at this stage at least) is well worthy of a 'project player' rookie spot on our list

Schache finished with 8.4 from 24 touches and 7 marks today versus WA. Not a bad effort

The more he pushes the better. Wanna feel like whichever KP Carlton do pick we're not missing out by taking the next best.

My views were purely "Draft" related, and the fact that I witnessed Hipwood play well at a role that I had not previously seen him play (CHB) was why he impressed me more on the day, from a "Draft point of view".

Buzza certainly stood up, and as I said in the previous post, he had a significant influence on the outcome. As such, I have no problem with the Qld hierarchy awarding him BOG. He would also have aroused some interest in any recruiters who were there.
He needs to keep building on that showing. I don't know anything of his journey to this point, but mixed among his "good stuff", were some "naive" efforts which suggest to me he has not been at this for very long (at least at this level). Happy to be told otherwise, but that is the impression I received. If I am correct, then his "draftability" (as a "project" player at the least) would rise a few notches.

Very weakened Oakleigh side, but reasonable opposition nonetheless.
If I am reading the Div2 strength correctly, NSW & Tasmania would be rated ahead, but if Qld produce their best from yesterday consistently in the Champs, they will give it a good shake. Yesterday's overall effort was a little inconsistent, and a repeat in the Champs will make it very tough.

Warming up to this bloke, hopefully he's around at our pick. Looks promising with Bears connection as well.

Currently we would have pick 3 and even though some of the more avid draft watchers rate him more around that pick 10 area you would have to think that he would be starting to rise up a bit more. shifter has said that he would take a few years but all big KPP's do. The remaining championship games will be interesting to say where he should and could go. For me however we need the best KPF on the draft, he can take contested marks and can impact the scoreboard. I would take
him at three even though there might be a couple of others rated higher.

Another that I am really warming to is Keiren Collins. A big KPD who plays FB, currently 193cm but is born in December. He and Weitering are the VC and Stingrays backline and both dominate most games. Depending on trades and everything else if he was available at one of our picks after Schache I would grab him.
