Weller seemed somewhat logical because we needed some pace and class, and we did go heavy with talls the previous drafts. But... if there were signs Weller wasn't keen on the move to Perth than choosing Weller over Lever is disgraceful.

I reckon just about every eastern states kid wouldn't be all that 'keen' on moving to the other side of the country, we pretty much wouldn't draft anyone from there if we were overly worried about that.

According to his book Pav wasn't keen on Freo but Freo ignored Pav and his family's input and took him anyway.

I agree that you have to back yourselves in sometimes, but times have changed and players are more open to move now.

Pick up Bootsma, Play Alex Pearce Forward.
Get Harley over for a fair deal.

*left field* get Sonny to talk Yarran into coming over.

Disposal by foot goes through the roof, entries into forward fifty are fast and effective.

Rotate Fyfe, Bennel and Yarran through the forwards line.

Let GWS keep McCarthy if they want, elsewise wait a year or two. Let's be the patient ones in this regard

You make a good argument however, the club mantra over the past handful of years is to take "the best available". This was probably a mistake given our dire lack of decent KPP.

The prospect of moving away from home to follow your dream is far less real for Victorian boys so it should come as no surprise they are far less prepared for that possibility and it isn't unusual for victorian kids drafted to non-victorian clubs to have a less than jubilant reaction when this happens

I can't shake the line of though that every step of this has been orchestrated by GWS:
a) Drafting him in the first place, deliberate strategy stockpiling talls knowing their value if traded later. Ensured the OTT draft concessions are stretched across 5+ years of drafts. And in McCarthy's case, they knew full well that it would be Freo that come knocking
b) Push contract extension at perfect time, visibility to other clubs of his progress, and therefore value, at it's lowest
c) Game time early in year to skyrocket value
d) Once that job was done, dropped/subbed - not wasting a single minute of time developing him over others.

He's a commodity to them.

I heard Adam Trelor manager on trade radio yesterday a how they were not happy with the GWS offer so he went and looked elsewhere. I think you are trying to lay the blame at someone's feet when there really isn't any blame to apportion. Perhaps as an experienced manager, Young should have encouraged his client to hold off an extension; but I'm glad Alex Pearce signed his in 2015, so it would be hypocritical to be too damning.

Apparently he requested to be traded before he signed the 2 year extension. Seems they were not going to let him go then or now. His manager has made it clear he won't be at gws when his current contract expires. So they are going to have an unhappy, disgruntled player on their list for two years and then he is going to walk.

Read an article yesterday somewhere. Young disputed that Cam had not requested a trade before the extension and said he won't be staying in Sydney after his contract is up.

He didn't make him sign. The club probably just said we won't be trading you, so he extended.
