we got Walker for unders through the old NSW scholarship

that's about all we can claim...
I reckon we paid unders for Brad Crouch as well. We gave up what, pick 10? What would have gone in a normal draft, surely top 3??

Only us and GC trade with GWS for those picks and they got O'Meara. I wonder in hindsight if clubs are regretting the opportunity there.

Though to be honest the whole system was so convoluted I've probably got everything mixed up.

Im not sure of that system exactly back then, but was JAG ever an option instead of BC? Scary how we would have won in a massive way with that. BC is still an awesome get. These kind of big wins with a bit of luck and astute judgement has helped us IMO soften the Tippett sanctions hits on us.

I feel sorry for Hamish. On his day he's undoubtedly as good as any Port has on it's list, but those hammies are a chronic problem and because of that we won't get to see his absolute best.
Only missed 2 games (played 24 of 26) and missed one of those for a gut punch on Mitchell last year, and played 22 games in 2013 so the chronic injury issues he had the first few season have been managed well since. We shall see if he can continue it (pre-season set back aside) when the games start.

10 & 1st round comp pick (So I think it worked out to be 10 & 11) for Brown & Crouch.

We gave up #10 & Davis pick for Luke Brown & MD #2(being Crouch).

The Davis pick ended up as being a Pick 20 (Tim Broomhead)

No. GC outbid us for MD#1, and took JAG first.

Chronic just means ongoing or recurring. It's recurred and the number of times now is concerning. It will happen in the future, but the worst part for Hamish is playing and wondering when it's going to happen again. I wonder if he adjusts his game to compensate.

Thanks. In a nutshell, how did they outbid us. Was there a way we could have got the #1.

I know its water under the bridge but JAG is spoken in the same breath as GAJ.

Gold Coast gave GWS pick #4 and a first round compensation pick (not sure... ? Ablett? I think Geelong traded back that pick to GC)

Adelaide gave them pick #10 and a first round compensation pick (Davis)

Not by me he isn't. I much prefer Prestia to Jaeger. He's flashy, yes and that gets the attention but teams will tag Prestia more than Jaeger, as Prestia pretty much better stats overall.

Still too early to call in my eyes.

Prestia is a beast but he's been in the system a couple of extra years to O'Meara and O'Meara had a very impressive first year at AFL level. I'm guessing he'll start slow this year as he needed shoulder surgery in the off season for memory but I think he'll begin to catch up to Prestia.

Interesting discussion on who you tag, Prestia is quite good at finding his own ball, something that's often harder to stop then someone who gets it on the run.

It was an auction so technically everyone was in it with a chance of winning the #1 pick, although we were in a better position than most clubs to negotiate a deal given we had pick 10 in the draft, the compensation from Davis and whatever we were going to get for Gunston leaving that year. That said, GWS had their sights set on O'Meara as well so they tried to engineer a deal that would return the #1 pick back to them involving us, Hawthorn, Fremantle and Brisbane. Besides GWS getting O'Meara the deal would have also resulted in us getting pick 2 in the mini-draft (Brad Crouch), Hawthorn getting Gunston and Fremantle getting Mitch Clark, along with an exchange of picks and lesser known players. But then the other clubs complained about not having a chance to get in on the auction and the AFL vetoed the super trade on the grounds that it was against the spirit of the intention behind giving GWS the mini-draft picks, which was so they could be used to trade in more established players as well as picks in the main draft. With that GC had the most to negotiate with given all their high picks from finishing last that season so our chances of beating them weren't good, still we got pick 2 as originally intended, and although it may have cost more than what it would have had the original deal gone through, we still got what I believe was a bargain.

Wow. That was really lengthy and informative thank you for taking the time.

Im really happy about Brad dont get me wrong, I was just curious if JAG was ever in the mix for us to get and obviously he wasnt, but Im stoked with BC. I predicted he will be the one to take his game to another level in 2015.

His preseason injury and breaking his leg basically ended his season. In 2014, we had a serviceable player, in 2015 we will have the player that we know that he can become.

I'm very much looking forward to what he'll do this year after his first uninterrupted preseason, touch wood nothing happens between now and round 1.

You cannot count his performance in 2014, it should have an asterix. Even then he was still better than ok and better than 400kay.

The majority of recruiters rated JAG as the best pick, though a couple did rate BC the highest of the two, I think that included Rendell. I am going to watch the evolution of those two over time with great interest to see who got it correct. Based on early games I believe Crouch, though far less flashy, looked more effective and performed at a higher level. I believe he was ripped off bigtime in the rising star, though I always knew it would happen. Crouch's stats were superior, however some of the judges were all GC hype and had watched far more of O'meara. Since then JAG has performed higher, but has also had a lot more gametime chances and less injury. Very interested to see if BC gets through this preseason fully, how well he will go in main season.

I didnt watch much of the last three months of last year, was MC around the mark or did Sando screw him by not selecting him.
I would say he performed well enough to be on the periphery of the seniors. Was unlucky not to be picked a few times.

Good kid but I don't believe he is in his brothers league. Will be a handy player though. Most likely a 2nd tier player with splashes of 1st tier, whereas b crouch has gun/elite potential.

Edit: Given it abit more thought its hard to tell what sort of player he will be. He doesn't appear to be pacey or have exceptional skill but he's a natural in and under ball magnet. Ala Scott Thompson.

Given the position he plays, in and under, it was hard to gauge how good he could be given he was competing against mature aged, big bodied midfielders and getting smashed. Once he has a few years in the gym and has the body to hold his own who knows. As I said he has the narural instinct to find the ball, be in the right position, is fearless and aggressive. There's alot to work with there.

MC's ability to extract the ball in tight from a contest and give off to the right person will eventually be top level.
