I wonder if all the dicking around by the AFL has finally caught up with it.
Maybe the networks could look at actually finding some commentators that call the game instead of ex footballers that don't add any insight whatsoever, instead have people turning it off or going to Foxtel.

There was an opinion piece about a week ago where someone ripped into 9 and their commentary team, was an amazingly written article and hard to disagree with a single thing that was said, basically swap cricket to AFL and the commentators names around and it's the exact same problem.

As I mentioned above, I wonder if Foxtel playing the same games hurts the numbers viewing as well given people could be watching the 7 feed through Foxtel instead.

Interested to read channel 9 won't go near the new TV deal preferring to concentrate on NRL.

Ratings figures back them up too - of the 5 top viewed shows of 2014 NRL took the top 3 spots with Origin games + their GF.

AFL GF was beaten out of 4th by MKR and ended up 5th.

Those ratings taken together with the alarming attendance drops last year don't put our game in great shape.

Damning. You do get the feeling interest in footy is at an all time low. Its simply staggering in a local sense how many south aussies don't give a rat's about footy when you compare that to the 90s when the state was footy mad. I guess the way its all contrived and set up to favour the former VFL and pet expansion sides has killed a lot of passion that will never come back.

Stupid pissing contest with rugby, contriving the league to send numerous premierships north of the border in an effort to win new supporters has done nothing but cheapen the game for a negligible gain in followership in the rugby states which has been more than offset by dying interest in the heartland.

I think the northern expansion issue is really valid too.

And in James Brayshaw you don't even need to change the names around.

As Honeyboy Wilson posted over on the HTB - Essendon have sounded out players on an SANFL club list as top up players and are offering $2k a week plus match payments and the SANFL club is scared it could lose the players for longer than just the pre-season.

Another report said that Sam Baulderstone was one of those players being sounded out. Small problem is that he doesn't fit the requirements the AFL set down, as he has never been on an AFL list.

absolutely, I get more and more disenchanted with every season that goes by.

Oh, so Essendon don't follow AFL rules? That's news right there.

I also wonder the constant tinkering with rules and interpretations hurts the game too
I remember a year or two ago cmndstab having a go at the AFL for constantly changing the rules and using the high attendances/ratings as vindication for doing so. He stated that the quality of spectacle has a delayed effect on AFL following and that the high attendance/rating figures were, in his opinion, due to the good work done years earlier and that the effects of all the tinkering would only be truly felt later, perhaps this is a sign of what he was talking about.

This - http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2015/feb/13/channel-nine-destroying-cricket-legacy

Has this great line:
"James Brayshaw has the emotional depth of a sock puppet during a button shortage"

How on earth does rugby league rate well? What's wrong with people?
Couple reasons.

It's short - 90 minutes, and it's made for TV. Even NRL fans admit it's better on TV than live.

It doesn't actually rate that well - the State of Origin does. Even AFL states watch it because it's a thing to watch on a Wednesday, it's an event etc.

This from The Oz talking about 2013 NRL: "Friday Night NRL average metro audiences fell from 673,000 to 626,000"

Compare to an article about AFL audiences:
"Seven says it is has also been happy. The new Thursday-night timeslot has enjoyed an average audience in the five city metro markets of about 615,000, the marquee Friday-night slot of about 644,000 and Saturday night of about 576,000.
http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment...-from-home-20140903-10atjh.html#ixzz3Rysvba32

So it's all a bit of a much of a muchness during the week (but AFL rates better on Sat and Sundays)

Just a random pick from 11 July last year:
AFL Friday night game got 588,000 in the 5 metro markets (Crows-Hawks), to come 12th; the NRL's game (Manly-Wests) got 522,00 to come 15th

They were both beaten by Better homes and Gardens, ABC news, "The Living Room" (what even is that?) etc etc

The following day, the AFL Saturday night game got 325,000, to come 14th, On Sunday the day game got 540,000 to come 17th (NRL not even in the top 20 on either Sat or Sunday)

But quality of matches matter. On 11 Aug for eg, the NRL Friday night game got 645,000 (Souths-Manly) and the AFL one got 524,000 (Bombers-Tigers)

But
The AFL has only one event - that's why Nine isn't so interested. Nine isn't buying the NRL season. It's buying the State of Origin and the GF. The rest it couldn't give that much of a stuff about. 670,000 on a Friday night? Geez, Home and Away gets 900k+ .

The NRL GF is also watched by more as it's on at night, which pretty much locks in a bigger audience than a day match will get.

Also it is on after the AFL season has finished - there's no competition at all from another code, so heck even I'll give it a watch

I think the Bombers will be arguing that since Baulderstone trained with them in 2013 than that's good enough to meet the requirements.

Those League games are all in Prime Time TV, which helps ratings and is the key reason we are having this night Grand Final debate now.

AFL can see their ratings falling behind, the knock on effect being that the next TV rights money wont be as much as expected (but still more than this current deal) unless the Grand Final increases its ratings.

Over the next few years we will see the starting time creep later into the afternoon and the finish encroach more into Prime Time TV.

Surely the bombers have to pay the 2 grand each cost out of the salary cap, the A(V)FL wouldn't foot the bill would they?;) Nothing would surprise me in this saga, talk about a blight on our game!

It is being included in Essendon's TPP.

Any SANFL player who signs up to Essendon for these NAB cup games believing it will help them get on an AFL list has rocks in their head.

They aren't going to look very good playing with a bunch of strangers against an AFL team. Better off sticking with your SANFL club, getting a proper uninterrupted preseason in you and impressing in real competitive matches, not this Mickey Mouse shiznick.
