FOOTY fans will see selected games for less this year, with clubs taking control of ticket prices from the AFL.

While the best seats to the best games at the MCG and Etihad will cost about $65, some clubs have drastically dropped prices to lower-drawing games at the ‘G.

Top price at the MCG last year was $60 and $62 at Etihad Stadium.

The season-opening MCG blockbuster between Carlton and Richmond will see prices range from $25 for general admission to $65 for premium seats on the wing at level two.

Level one seats behind the goals will cost $50, with the cheapest reserve seat ticket being $30.

On Friday the Herald Sun reported AFL clubs had been put in charge of setting their own prices for matches this season.

The ticket prices became publicly available on Monday, with many elements of last year’s unpopular variable pricing structure retained.

There are still multiple reserved seating sections at Melbourne’s stadiums — eight at the MCG and seven at Etihad.

But clubs are using their new powers to reduce the number of price categories and experiment with cost.

Melbourne will let almost all fans in for the general admission price of $25 to its Round 5 MCG clash with Fremantle, while Carlton has also slashed prices for games against interstate sides at the MCG to $30.

Richmond has set a top price of $55 for matches against interstate sides — as opposed to $65 for clashes against traditional rivals — and also has seats as low as $25.

St Kilda has $30 tickets for its Round 5 clash with Essendon at Etihad Stadium, where the cheapest reserved seats are usually $35.

The changes come after a directive from the AFL that clubs must help raise flagging attendances in Melbourne.

Last year, the average crowd at the MCG was just over 50,000 — down from almost 55,000 in 2013.

The league blamed the figures on a “soft” start to the season when the MCG was not available, as well as a turn-off factor associated with the Essendon doping saga.

It also acknowledged its variable pricing system had been poorly explained and was widely unpopular.

Under last year’s system, matches were classed by the AFL as either “A”, “B” or “C”. The league then applied up to seven different price categories to each match.

In other ticketing changes already announced by the AFL, kids under 15 will get in for free at the MCG and Etihad on Sundays.

The league has also scrapped fully ticketed matches, with the exception of Anzac Day.

If someone rocks up to the G for the Melbourne/Gold Coast match and is told sorry unless you want to pay an extra $15pp you have to sit on level 4 while 80% of the ground remains empty it is going to do nothing more than piss them off and severely discourage them from attending in the future.

Of course it is easier for those clubs who have most of their home games against clubs from the same state but when you play 7 of your 11 home games against non-Vic clubs it makes it increasingly more difficult to try and convince people to bother showing up.

That $40 price is for a reserved seat.
The bulk of level 1 seats will still be GA price of $25.

Demons supporters early with the excuses.

Where does it say that? The OP states "A ground level seat is $40."
You think the Demons are going to use this new initiative to increase level 1 seats for an interstate opponent from $25 to $40?
If you go to Ticketek you can buy a level 1 reserved seat for $40. They have 2 bays on sale. Obviously most of the rest will be GA.
These articles are often incomplete and inaccurate.

I didn't think they would but who knows. Just going off what was written that was the implication. I assume they'll still have seats behind the goals at both ends for the minimal price, most of the rest of level 1 is taken up by AFL/MCC/Members reserve these days anyway. Will be interesting to see if they force GA members to pay an additional reserve seat fee to sit in the forward pockets at the Punt Road End as these areas are usually reserved for GA members (at our games anyway).
