We'll move forward and be allocated the appropriate points when Sydney and GWS bid for their players. My understanding is we'll be able to cover bids on picks 8 and 10 without going into deficit

Absolutely correct.
Been reading all the worried posts and finally had to say something. Schwab and team knew exactly what they were doing.

Using Callum Twomey's Phantom Draft Form Guide (as a guide) we will have picks 33/34/35/36/37 by the time we need to bid on academy kids. Simple math.

1. Callum Mills goes pick 3 = 2234 points less 25% discount leaves 1675. Sydney will use picks 33/36/37 which equals 1548 points. All picks to end of draft and deficit of 127 points, we now take this off pick 44 which leaves a credit of 235 points. Pick 44 now becomes pick 53. We move our picks 38-42 up 3 places.

2.Jacob Hopper goes 5 = 1878 points less 25% discount leaves 1408. GWS will use pick 10 which equals 1395 points. Pick 10 goes to end of draft and deficit of 13 points, we now take this off pick 34 which leaves a credit of 529 points. Pick 34 now becomes pick 35. We move our picks 38-42 up 1 more place.

3.Matthew Kennedy goes 6 = 1751 points less 25% discount leaves 1313. GWS will use picks 35/43/53 which equals 1133 points. Picks 35/43/53 go to end of draft and leaves a deficit of 180 points, we now take this off pick 55 leaves a credit of 27 points, pick 55 becomes pick 72. We move our picks 38-42 up 1 more place.

As you can see we will pick up 5 places in this scenario.

We will use picks 33/34/35/36 = 2129 if boys go picks 8 and 10 this is 2946 less 25% = 2209 leaves a deficit of 80 points, we now take this off pick 37 which goes to back of the draft leaving us a credit of 403 points, pick 37 becomes 42. We still have this up our sleeve.

If boys go 10 and 12 as per the phantom draft guide = 1997 points we use 33/34/35 which is 1566 points leaving 431 points deficit, we take this off pick 36 leaves 71 points credit, pick 36 now becomes pick 67 and we still have pick 37.

Giddyup.

Damn I forgot that. Anzac day medalist... so he got BOG against a club going through the worst drug scandal in the games history. definitely something to hang your hat on!

He's a great pick 76 though, has improved on his draft position a lot just like Rockliff. Good on him I reckon.

When a club matches a bid the slot in at the matched position. Additional picks move to the end of the draft. So Sydney would slot in at pick 3 and all other picks slide down one. Then 33,34,35 are pushed to the end and all subsequent picks move up 3... so one step back, 3 steps forward.

That was the AFL intent but it wasn't legislated... so blew up in the AFL's face when GWS traded their 17 year old mini draft picks for ND picks 2 (Gold Coast) and pick 3 (Melbourne).

GWS tried. No one wants to trade out an established player unless they are absolutely forced (Bennell)/are clearing the decks (Yarran, etc) - look at Melbourne offering us pick 2 for Rocky. The negatives to clubs far outweigh the positives.

Will be interesting to see how GWS fans treat McCarthy next year.
I can't speak for the other two, but he's a good bloke. I'll cheer him on. Though we're also one of the few non-Goodes booing fan groups, so I like to think we're just a better class of people. ;)

Patton fit, Stewart can play 3rd tall. Kinda presumptuous to think they'll even see him in the seniors.
May increase his value for a potential trade to Freo this time next year if he plays and kicks 30+ goals

Bloody football, excited about next year now. Lol, I think walker could be a gem. Over all happy with the trade period and think our list is ready to explode with an injury free season.

Still not sure on Leppa. But will give him 100% till the bye next year, God I hope he can pull it of. Just what the club needs. Carn da Lions.

Don't we get a 20% discount.

"The AFL has settled on a maximum discount of 20 per cent for academy and father-son players in the first round. After that, the discount will be fixed at 197 points - the discount for pick 18."

Essentially, yeah. But it's actually a 20% discount :). It was 25% for academy and 15% for father/son but they changed both to 20%

How sad. In the AFL's eye the Lions don't even exist. Readers of AFL.com got to choose between 10 other teams who they thought did best at the trade table, the Lions didn't even make the list. That is why the Lions hang by the skin of their teeth financially, the AFL simply don't care.

In all fairness though our trading wasn't good, it was OK. Our points + trading is exquisite though as we get our lads, plus a "KPF" and some running machines (big positive with sub rule change). If we get academy boys + Whitecross and Schacke then overall that's gotta be considered to be bloody good I think.

Freo really should have offerred Barlow or weller, they used to be bad traders always giving overs, now they are even worse offerring unders

Probably because it's not like they're suddenly going to conjure more value on their list, especially when they're in a finals window. Can't see GWS wanting Barlow after his year though. There would have to be some serious steak knives. Like steak knives that could slice through bone and cure Cancer.

Need a KPD surely..... I don't know if our expectations of Andrews is way overs it not.

I'd agree, I love Andrews very much but still think we need that nullifying KPD to take gorillas and whilst with his frame he might develop into that monster size it really doesn't take advantage of his skill set.
