Analysis 2016 AFL Trade Week Thread

The Brendon Ah Chee who lit up the last month or so of 2015 as a big-bodied inside mid with those amazing hands was very much required.

Then he just evaporated into nothing with about 20 other blokes.

What even has happened to our player development? It's returned to the darkest days where literally 90% of the list went backwards.

I recon our second tier mids suffered most from having no real ruckman in 2016. Finding your way against the best players in the league is hard enough without having to rove to the opposition ruckman.

I am not sure if Gold Coast have a player that might interest us as part of a deal but again I would not entertain list cloggers like Brooksby.

I said it before and feel it is worth repeating. The players (especially young players) really started going backwards once Richo (and Walsh) left the club. Ah Chee burst onto the scene after them but guys like O'Shea and Jonas who looked like becoming best 22 for us went backwards that ****in fast after the aforementioned 2 left.

Look at how the Saints have kicked on with Richo and all the quality youth that are improving leaps and bounds. Look at our youth and how shit they've become since Richo left.

Austin, Clurey, Dbj and Amon all had really progressive years. I don't think it's as simple as richo left. Good clubs lose talent all the time.

O'shea is my least favourite port player! I think there's a market for defenders. Jonas should have decent trade value. I think someone will offer a bag of chips for O'shea. Happy to take it. we have small list adjustments we need to improve our list balance. We will do them. Still think Cd will pull a rabbit out of his sleeve and trade out a 'big name' player.

Strangest feeling I can ever recall (outside of bed) was walking down the road in sucre after a dozen shots of genuinely coca infused strong liquor (not the shizen "Agwa" that is now legal here). Ive grown up on 40-50% home brew plum brandy. That was different.

Heath Scotland, Josh Hunt, Alipate Carlile, Rory Sloane, Aliir Aliir a few recent selections at 44. Gray at 55. This is besides the point though.

Why on earth would you persist with a team, a culture even that is now known for nothing but outright failure? You don't hold onto players for what if scenarios (even more so in our situation), you move them on and reset the clock. It's far more likely to unearth a talent at 44 than a player who is 4 or 5 years into their career suddenly coming on. I would say there are stats to back that up.

The dogs just won a premiership with only three of their players being top 10 picks, only four inside the top 20. The core of their entire list is built around pick 25+ players.

Re the Dogs - add in Libba f/s selection as top 10 but anyway this indicates the importance of quality coaching and leadership. We've had neither for the last 2 years

If Jonas is currently un-contracted ( as has been reported ), the unknown is, have the club offered him a contract which he doesn't want to sign because he wants to explore his options, or have they lost interest in him and see him as expendable?

I hope you're on the money. I like Barrett and if we can get Black on the cheap i'll be satisfied.

Yep , then why don't we look to trade or just piss off those responsible for the regression ?

They only got games because of injuries.
Out of those DBJ would be the only one that may start in round 1. Maybe.
If all other players are fit he will have competition for that one spot, so maybe or maybe not.

There is a real chance that Clurey will go the way of Butcher. Many years on the list for very few games.

Oh and I am not sure we can say that Amon progressed in 2016. Probably was one of the players that didn't go backwards as much as others.

The other wildcard in the trading with Gold Coast situation is that they can only use as many picks at the draft as they have available list spots.

Currently they are looking at 6 players out (4 delistings and two to be traded), if Ah Chee comes in that's 5 spots free, if they get a player from Hawthorn that will be 4 spots free.

They have picks 4, 8, 22, 24, 26, 30, 44. They will get picks before 22 for Prestia and O'Meara.

They can't even use picks from 26 on without more delistings. To give up say 30 and a player is actually no hit to them at all.
