Yeah thats a ripper deal for GWS. they've still have 3 first rounders and if you believe the scouts they will walk away with 3 top 10 picks. 1 from anywhere with 3 and 2 Upgrades through their academy.

It's almost not worth discussing their accessibility to high picks, they'll get them and trade for more for a few years yet. The interest is more (like with Freo now) where the crumbs from their well-stocked table drop.

Plus Austin who they were nice enough to develop for us in their academy, also overlooked Chad in the draft when he could've been the difference in them winning a premiership this year.

I think we've done pretty well from GWS, in saying that still wouldn't mind seeing what other bargain surplus talent can be shaken loose this & the coming years.

They have compiled/been gifted such a huge stockpile of young talent that they are basically able to trade out the surplus every year - and by surplus I mean talented young players who would be in the selection frame at most clubs but not at the AFL's super club - for even more high draft picks that they use on even more young talent. So basically they just cycle one in, one out and keep the cream of their choosing. If they manage their list correctly, these advantages will last literally decades. It's disgraceful.

Dodoro sounded interested enough when he was interviewed on radio too. And Richmond said he basically was just going through the motions. The whole thing is weird.

They'll probably win the flag next year and get pick 1 somehow.

If we are to believe Tredders, Hinkley put the kybosh on the deal not Hartlett. If that is true supporters are entitled to ask, what the **** is going on? One minute we want to trade Hartlett the next minute the Coach and Captain are saying no.

I agree with Tredders that the leadership group should have no say as to whether Hartlett goes or stays.

Why stop before trade week? I'd be for a transfer window/deadline not unlike the NBA where a team can play well into the season with the ability to shuffle their list as they see fit to cope for a multitude of reasons. (injuries, form and game plan/style).

Imagine Port this year, come round 4 when Lobbe was yet to fire a shot, could go to the Bulldogs who have just lost their captain for the year and an eternity away from being premiers, offer Lobbe up for this years first rounder?

The Lobbe hypothetical is a good one. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight it would have been great for us and probably for Lobbe, but (IMO) not delivered on the promise of the trade to the Bullies, but it would have been the right idea at the time for all parties. The question is what does Port get at that moment of the season, apart from immediate salary cap relief of running one player down on the list? A future pick? A player? A mid season *trade* window would allow contracted playerS to deal with clubs to fix unexpected issues on both sides quickly. That limited aspect, player for player, makes sense but its far easier to implement in EPL because no salary cap, no draft and few list rules. What is a fair trade in such limited context, or does AFL choose not to care in an emergency mid season move as we would in the "main" trade period? There are other issues too.

Off the top of my head I'm not in favor of letting standard player contracts *end* mid season. Gut feeling says that opens too many cans of worms. But in a salary cap and list-rules world how else do you get enough supply to create a market for mid season trade or draft without adding in mid season contract ends and delistings?

Trades of afl-contracted players plus retirements by mid-season would be relatively rare compared to the number of kids either newly qualified by age at time of mid season draft or the number of mature agers surprising in the lower leagues and looking like short term fixes to some clubs.

Clubs' draws are invariably loaded unevenly at the midpoint of the season so there's a "fairness" issue in any mid season draft order.

It would tend to thin out the talent pool available at the end of the year when all clubs have been through the wringer of the draw plus finals and we know who the year's real lower performing clubs have been.

It would increase the temptation for clubs to dump LTI prone players mid season rather than sticking by them, and once out of the system it would make it harder for them to get back.

Overall, not seeing how a mid season draft adds much apart from a window for mature agers to jump in but how would you make it work without the big can of worms that is mid-season delistings ie the creation of numbers of DFAs that helps make a market?

This trade makes me so furious!

The team that really would of won the Grand Final if Stevie J played that prelim, now gets pick 3 in the draft. What makes it even better is they have just achieved it by trading out a player who did not play a single game this year and would not be in their best 22 even if available. He would not of played ahead of Cameron, Patton or Lobb.

What makes it even better again, Is that they will also be trading out another player who is not best 22, in Caleb Marchbank, for another first rounder.

They will end up having 4 first round draft picks, one of them being pick 3 and two star academy players they will get to bid on from the stupid bidding system.

They will be getting 3 of the best 10 players in the draft, one other top 20, all for what? Imagine what another team would have to give up to achieve that. We finished tenth and are scrapping the barrel for a second round draft pick, where they can go and offload two players who are not even in their best 22. That's like us giving up Butcher and Ah Chee for pick 3 and 13. I know they aren't the same caliber players, but in regards to their standing on each respective list they are.

Oh and guess what?! I forgot what they are going to be getting for Jack Steele! Another player not in their best 22. Probably a pick around the 15-25 mark.

Go and get ****ed AFL, you have completely tarnished this competition for a long long time. I don't think people are really appreciating what is going to happen. They will continue to trade out these fringe players for many years to come, continuing to get multiple first round draft picks even though they will be winning the flag or at the very least finishing top 4.

The high draft picks they are getting this year and future years will continue to be stock piled and on traded for more early draft picks, or if they happen to turn into a gun, they will trade one of their current best 22 for a early first rounder. This is a never ending loop they have created by giving them far too many first round concessions and letting them have a larger list than others for so long.

Don't forget McCarthy was like pick 14? They just got pick 3 for him with some cheap exchange of picks later on.

High draft picks are supposed to help the lower teams rebuild. Instead it will push GWS to an unbeatable force and will ruin the experience for all other 17 teams and their supporters.

Am I salty about it? Damn straight I am. This is a ****ing joke.

But McCarthy's worth was basically nothing.

He quite simply refused to play for GWS and preferred to sit the year out instead. He could have simply walked into the PSD and no other club would touch him with a ten foot pole.
