On the Jordan Lewis article on the afl website 93% of people think Melbourne won the trade. And Damian Barrett is sneaking under a rock just in case someone asks him questions about his silence on Hawthorn's salary cap and how they were going to fit Vickery, Titchell and JOM under it with their stars.
Although they still don't seem to have an answer to how they'll get JOM with Hartung and Whitecross staying and them not to able to get another first-rounder to complement #10.

I'm ok with it now that I know that 19 is counted as a first round pick.

9 + 19 means that from 2018 to 2019 we can trade our first round picks for players from GWS.

With decent kids putting pressure on your second and third year players to perform, they in turn will put pressure on our best 22 to perform.
Youre happy because of an arbitrary classification?

Who devised the points system because wow.
I don't mind the points, but it should have been all in, not this bastardised half points, half picks shit.

It should be clubs get points based on ladder position. For simplicity say 10000 for 18th, 9500 for 17th and so on (obviously in reality it wouldn't be a fixed gap).

Clubs can then use these for trading, so removing the issue of club has picks 20 and 40, other club would accept around 30. With points no issues, just agree on points to transfer.

For drafting instead of first pick etc. a club nominates a player (take it in turn in reverse ladder order). Clubs can bid up to 80% of their pick total on any one player. For Academy and Father-sons clubs have 20% extra they can use over 'real points', that can't be used elsewhere. So Sydney could bid 1000 points for a player and if successful only 800 come of their total to use on other players. I'd also make it so any club can only take one special bid a draft (successful, so might bid on 3 academy picks, using their extra 20% with only one successful, other successful ones to pay full price).

The current system is the worst of all worlds for everyone except the NSW and QLD clubs. They'd still have a leg up with a full points system, but no more trading picks 50,52,57,78 and 90 for pick 3 shit would go on.

Yep. This is the "we're a top-4 side" narrative writ large.

I mean, if we are we've just knocked this one out of the park.
Only if this time we exploit being on the rise to trade out inconsistent guys at a peak.

Which we wouldn't.

If Jasper leaves via free agency at the end of next year did we just lose the pick we could peg his value to?

That's a darn good question. Jasper as an example would surely be worth our after-our-first-round-pick compensation, but if we don't have that first round pick...

Or would it be tied to finishing position regardless? Like, if we had traded in a future first rounder that ended up pick 1, he wouldn't be worth pick 2, for instance.

have to be tied to our finishing position.... or a team could get a tied to their first round pick and trade up to get pick 1... making it pick 1 and 2

Richmond has Pick 27 as compo for Tyrone Vickery, they'd already traded out Pick 26 last year to Gold Coast

I believe Collingwood got a compensation pick at #11 for Dale Thomas when he went to Carlton, Hawthorn got one at #19 for Lance Franklin in that same draft

Yeah, but I'm talking futures specifically, where you're not trading up to increase your compensation pick, it just so happens that that's what the pick is currently.

I'm sure that they've gone the logical route and you're given the pick after what your first round pick would have been. Surely.

It's not arbitrary though because it probably means that technically we've satisfied the "two 1st rounders in four years" rule.

So that means we are free to burn our 2018 1st rounder as well.

Yep. Picks are overrated.

Ah, well that answers it. Good to know.

It's Christmas, cash is tight,

Lololol

The club is amateur hour.

We could have got Bryce Gibbs and next year's 30 for pick 9. This is brilliant

Please, just ban me permanently. This club isn't worth my time.

3 memberships from this house won't be renewed, and there are 3 kids who will take their mothers advice that the club are all failures from top to bottom bar 4 good players so go find a local Melbourne team to support

We are a joke. An utter joke

We could have got almost anything for pick 9. This is beyond belief

Ford Fairlane, I know you want to, please save me 700 hours of keyboard mashing next year, permanent ban me please

My daughter will send her Travis boak birthday card back to the club too.

We're done.
Now THAT is salty.

Good question. Surely the rules wouldn't be that stupid.

The pressure is obviously on, not to f*** up the draft picks the club got for next year's first rounder.

One of them will probably need to be a strong chance to be vying for first 22 from the day he walks in the door, and the other hopefully not too far behind.

Get those picks right, and the gamble will probably pay off, get it wrong, and finish in the lower half of the ladder, and it almost certainly won't, and there is a strong chance a potential blue chipper will have been given away for sfa.

No, the first rounder is still "ours" but will be taken by Brisbane.
In 2014, Geelong traded their first round to Adelaide (pick 14), while GC used the first round compo for Ablett (that was traded back to GC) at pick 15.
I.e., the compo picks will come after where it would have as if the original pick had not been traded.

I'd imagine that if we got 1st round comp for Jasper the AFL would still tie it to the position of this pick, even though the Lions will be the ones using it.

I don't know for sure, but surely?

I don't see how this trade equates to short term pressure release & job security if anything it's putting a noose around the neck

I feel like I've seen this exact post from you before about other issues. How many times have you cancelled your membership now?

so my guess is, if we have another poor season, Pittard leaves as a free agent - I'd say he's more likely and more replacable than Trengove, we'd then gain a first round compo pick immediately after the pick that was ours that's now gone to Brisbane

I think the rule is that it's to do with being in the top 25% of highest earning players depends on the compensation pick

If we take 3 solid plug'n'play types to bolster the team this year we're a decent chance of slotting into that good-mediocre 5th-to-8th team with no real shot of winning a flag thing, that has been a certain club's shtick for so long.

Taking the tall early next year won't reap meaningful dividends for 3-5 years.
